True-Name Nemesis

Request for MTGO Availability

New 30 Mar 2022 Asked by elspethconquersbreathmouthwash 31 Comments

I know this question is an intersection of two things WOTC doesn't pay too much attention to (which is fine), MTGO and Legacy, but now that cards are being regularly printed in supplemental products like Neon Dynasty Commander which are Legacy playable, can you pass on a request to make the cards more available in MTGO somehow? This has been an issue since True-Name Nemesis but is becoming more impactful as more cards are printed. On behalf of the MTGo and Legacy communities thank you :)

I’ll pass along the request.

Steering Away from Legacy Issues

New 13 Dec 2021 Asked by djscrub 52 Comments

"We specifically were conservative in the costing of the eternal-legal cards because our goal was for them to not come anywhere close to being a problem in Legacy." This, I think, is what a lot of people needed to hear. There is no True-Name Nemesis equivalent, added to sell packs to competitive players.

No. The eternal cards in Unfinity are more about casual fun than high power level.

Mechanics and Playtesting Insights

New 07 May 2020 Asked by gophilipbowles 48 Comments

"We will have a lot of data to crunch. Note that a card/mechanic can be disruptive in competitive play, but be beloved and played a lot in casual play." For a set aimed at Standard, such a mechanic evidently qualifies as a mistake. Monarch is a great casual mechanic - but in Legacy where it's hard to remove the monarchy it's free white card draw. You still seems to focus too much on playtesting mechanics as intended, not how they'll be used in competitive settings (Exhibit A: True-Name Nemesis).

We do not have the resources to test every format. We test cards primarily for the lowest powered and most sanctioned formats, Standard, Sealed and Booster Draft, and use other tools to balance older formats if cards cause issues. (Note we do test for formats if the set is aimed for the format - with things like Commander products and Modern Horizons.)

True-Name Nemesis Card Alignment

New 06 Mar 2020 Asked by petruscaex 33 Comments

Mark, True-Name Nemesis ability would be in a White card if it were printed today?

Possibly. We’ve let blue get the weird protection abilities over the years while white was king of protection from color.

True-Name Nemesis Mistake

New 08 Apr 2017 Asked by calintares 37 Comments

in your podcast about not designing just to prove you mention it's important to design for your target audience. Would you say that the inclusion of True-Name Nemesis, which is a mediocre multiplayer card but an eternal staple was a mistake in Commander 2013?

Yes, I do believe in retrospect it was a mistake.

Protection Rules Clarified

New 20 Oct 2016 Asked by neotrup 18 Comments

Suppose I'm playing a game against Pete Venters, and I have a Fascist Art Director enchanted with Hero's Resolve. If I activated the Art Director's ability naming Pete Venters, I assume the enchantment falls off and the Art Director becomes unblockable/untargetable/ect. Now, if I play True-Name Nemesis and choose Pete Venters, can I enchant it with Hero's Resolve? Is the answer different for black border and silver border magic?

Protection from a player is different than protection from an artist, the latter of which is only a thing in silver border.

Commander Product Format

New 23 Jul 2015 Asked by abelzumi 179 Comments

Re: a supplementary Commander product - One of the reasons that people feel that they can't get into Commander as much is because of the price tag, even for the starters, and especially if one of the cards becomes the next Flusterstorm or True-Name Nemesis. What if there were Commander products in boosters to increase availability like Modern Masters?

A fine question. Would you prefer the Commander products as is or in booster form?

Commander Color Pie Issues

New 01 Jun 2015 Asked by hatchethandninja 45 Comments

True-Name Nemesis, Chaos Warp, and Hornet Queen all seem like color pie violators. They also all came from Commander products. Is there simply less oversite of these product's color pie adherence?

I’m usually the one that oversees color pie issues and I wasn’t as vigilant on the supplemental products because I was less involved with them. The problem is getting fixed for the future though.

True-Name Nemesis Trivia

New 11 Mar 2015 Asked by truenamenemesis 40 Comments

Today is my birthday! Can I get some trivia about True-Name Nemesis?

The inspiration for the design was something that would play uniquely in multiplayer play. I’m pretty sure the person who designed it (Mark Gottlieb I believe) wasn’t thinking about two-player play. Remember, by the way, that the numbers on it changed during development.Happy Birthday!

Legacy Color Balance

New 10 Oct 2014 Asked by ricardolongo 23 Comments

So, is R&D's stance on Legacy "blue is by far the best color there, and we won't even try to change that"? That saddens me. True-Name Nemesis could totally be a white card, for example.

It is our goal for all five colors to be close with in power level with the pendulum always swinging in different colors’ favor.

Opinion on True-Name Nemesis

New 05 Apr 2014 Asked by jeffderek 17 Comments

If you don't like Commander Eesha because protection from creatures makes the game uninteresting, what do you think about True-Name Nemesis?

I’m not a huge fan of the design. I’m kind of keen on player interaction. In fairness to the design, it was created to be played in a multiplayer format where the card was supposed to have interesting political ramifications and was much easier to deal with.

Strategy Viability

New 25 Mar 2014 Asked by aaronneville 34 Comments

RE: land destruction -- You said "There is a difference between giving people things they can do and giving people things that prevent other people from doing anything." Each strategy prevents other strategies in some way, though. Tons of overpowered creatures, which has been pushed recently, prevent some players from some strategies. You can't pick and choose what should be viable. And how does True-Name Nemesis fit into the idea of not having strategies that prevent things?

“You can’t pick and choose what should be viable.” Uh, yes we can. That’s our job. Okay, more development than design but it is R&D’s job to decide what is good and what is not because on what we feel will make for a more fun game.

True-Name Nemesis Origin

New 31 Dec 2013 Asked by ravenclaw567-blog 42 Comments

I recently witnessed another player "blame" you for True-Name Nemesis. But if I recall correctly you did not contribute to Commander 2013. Am I right?

That is correct. I neither made the card or even worked on the product it appears in. As official scapegoat, it is though completely my fault. : )

Commander Deck Choices

New 12 Dec 2013 Asked by teancrumpetsfan 34 Comments

You put True-Name Nemesis and Baleful Strix into the same Commander deck however. So either you did this on purpose, knowing what would happen, or the people at WotC are truly incompetent. Which one is it?

There are other options. : )

Errata Use Philosophy

New 12 Dec 2013 Asked by aaronneville 23 Comments

Would thought be given to having True-Name Nemesis receive Errata to sustain its functionality in multiplayer games but not entirely apply to 1v1 games?

That’s not how we want to use errata.

True-Name Nemesis Origin

New 24 Nov 2013 Asked by vapocool 7 Comments

So... who designed True-Name Nemesis?

I believe is was designed by Mark Gottilieb with multiplayer in mind. Why do I need to ally with someone? Because I have a threat that I cannot deal with but they can.

True-Name Nemesis Design

New 22 Nov 2013 Asked by mazerin 26 Comments

Was True-Name Nemesis created for Leacy, because it is really bad in multiplayer commander but really amazing in Legacy?

It was created for Commander and then costed with Legacy in mind.

True-Name Nemesis Origin

New 15 Nov 2013 Asked by tehpoker 33 Comments

Why did you make True-Name Nemesis? For people like me who are legitimately interested in the Grixis deck to actually play Commander with it, the deck is impossible to get.

The card was made to be a cool multiplayer card. Design doesn’t even set power level so we had no idea that it was going to end up playable in Legacy.

True-Name Nemesis Design

New 03 Nov 2013 Asked by myheartgoesoontz 16 Comments

Desptite being in the Commander decks, it's pretty obvious that True-Name Nemesis was not designed for EDH. He's inarguably worse in multiplayer, and a 3/1 isn't impressive in the wrath-heavy, 40-life, battlecruiser format that is EDH. What say you?

I talked to the card’s designed, Mark Gottlieb. He says he designed the card for Commander. Did development possibly push its numbers for Eternal formats? I don’t know but maybe. Was he designed for Eternal formats? No.

Eternal Format Design

New 02 Nov 2013 Asked by chewylsb 13 Comments

Its true that True-Name Nemesis was made in a multiplayer focused product but from wizard's own articles cards, like True-Name Nemesis, are designed for Eternal, which is a 1v1 format, so keep that in mind when people ask you questions about the card and how it breaks the color pie.

True-Name Nemesis was not designed for Eternal formats. It was designed for multiplayer with an awareness that it might be playable in Eternal formats.
