Bonus Sheet Canon Status

New 10 Apr 2024 Asked by frasevityyy 37 Comments

Hi Mark, just had a quick question about Bonus Sheets: Are Bonus Sheet cards considered canon? Like if there were to be a Planeswalker reprint in a Bonus Sheet, would that Planeswalker then be considered canon/present to the story of the set? Thank you lots for taking your time out to answer our questions !!!

No, bonus sheet cards aren’t inherently in the story.

Reasons for Rarity Changes

New 31 Dec 2023 Asked by aalgot 64 Comments

Why do you change rarity with reprints anyway?

Four main reasons: 1) There are cards in a gray area between rarities which can change set to set.2) The game ebbs and flows, and what effect is what rarity can change.3) We could have gotten it wrong the first time out. 4) Different sets, especially supplemental sets, can have different rarity needs and parameters.

Appreciation for Direct Communication

New 07 Jun 2023 Asked by kiefbowl 39 Comments

My friends and I are chatting once again that you provide a unique opportunity to communicate directly with the public via this blog, which is extremely cool and very unique and appreciated. Few IPs/products allow this kind of access so thank you for taking time out of your busy day to run this q&a blog, which you literally don’t have to do. :)

Thank you for the kind words. I’m glad you and your friends enjoy it.

Jumpstart Box Misinterpretation

New 27 May 2023 Asked by riptidecrab 44 Comments

I took time out of my day to give you some notes on your product about Jumpstart boxes having 18 packs, and you called me a conspiracy theorist. You have a habit of exaggerating your critics' points so you can shoot down the straw men. Besides which, how can a company's internal decision even be a conspiracy? A conspiracy requires multiple parties. And it was such a minor complaint. All you had to say was "I see your point" and I'd move on. Instead you chose to insult me and double my grar. Why?

It wasn’t my intention to insult you. I sincerely apologize for doing so. I was just trying to make the point that most reasons behind non-game design decisions are tied to mundane production and business concerns.

Reception Of Legendary Sorceries

New 25 Dec 2021 Asked by phantomarcadianae 59 Comments

How well received were legendary sorceries? I really liked the concept, I even like the restriction they had, but I think they were generally overcosted because of that restriction.

Legendary sorceries were the lowest rated mechanical element in Dominaria in our market research. That doesn’t mean we might not do them again, but they weren’t a huge hit their first time out.

Discussing Set Update Timelines

New 05 Dec 2020 Asked by jonpaulcardenas 37 Comments

My understanding is that currently sets can't be changed about nine months to a year out, are there ever conversations about trying to make it possible to do changes closer to release? Is it a significant issue not being able to have sets that are soon to be released able to react to how players are recieving the current set?

The lead times used to be longer. We chopped some time out, but there’s not a lot of fat left trim from the schedules.

Hascon Event Reminiscence

New 26 May 2020 Asked by itscrispycoffeecollector 22 Comments

Happy Birthday, Mark! I met you at Hascon, where we got a picture and you signed my Grimlok mat. I also remember you taking time out of your day (multiple times) to answer fan questions in the rest lounge. Thanks for your dedication and drive for the game and the community!

Limited Play Time

New 31 Oct 2019 Asked by theloganite 42 Comments

I know Commander politics keeps you out of it normally, but have you tried 1v1 Brawl or Commander at all? If you have time between killing Magic and world domination, of course

Besides other factors, I don’t have much time out of the office to play Magic. My son and I play occasionally, but with Planeswalker decks.

Unstable Card Legality

New 22 Sep 2018 Asked by hudson4351 26 Comments

Could the Unstable card “Time Out” (or a functionally equivalent card) be printed in black border? If not, why not?

Blue can put cards so many from the top in black border. It just can’t roll a six-sided die.

Unstable Draft Query

New 28 Apr 2018 Asked by brij4074-blog 21 Comments

Hi Mark, I finally got the chance to draft unstable in cube form and wanted to say thanks. We had one weird situation we hoped you could rule on what happens if someone targets one of my creatures with timeout while I have a split screen in play?

The owner of Time Out gets to choose the library (pile) to put it in.

Contraption Rules

New 06 Apr 2018 Asked by egyptcraze 28 Comments

un-judge! i need a ruling please! can i time out a contraption, and does it just go to the scrapyard as a statebased action since it cant go into its owner's library (obv ignoring rules lawyer shenanigans)?

If Contraptions would go to any zone other than the battlefield, they go to the scrapyard instead.

Time Out's Library Effects

New 09 Dec 2017 Asked by phoenixrising211 21 Comments

What happens if you use Time Out to put an opponent's Animated Library into their library under the top X cards?

Read Animate Library: “If enchanted library would leave the battlefield, exile Animate Library instead”.

Community Engagement Thanks

Thank you so much for taking time out of your day to talk to the community. I really appreciate that you do that and so do many others. Please keep up the good work and don't let those extremely rude people get you down

I’ve been at this a long time. I have a pretty thick skin. : )

Eldritch Moon Misunderstandings

New 23 Jun 2016 Asked by unknownwarrior33 37 Comments

I think part of the reason people are upset about Eldritch Moon is misunderstanding. You see Innistrad has "horror world," they see it as "Gothic horror world." An important difference, right?

Innistrad first time out was gothic horror world, but we mined most of that space. A return required us finding some more horror tropes to use.

Enchantment Land Discussion

New 17 May 2016 Asked by meandering-monotreme 40 Comments

There's been a lot of conversation about enchantment lands. Can you put this conversation on the shelf for a bit? I don't really care either way and the discussion has been dragging a bit. Thanks!

Fair enough. The enchantment land discussion gets a time out. On to other topics!

Toaster's Spotlight Break

New 12 Sep 2015 Asked by igorelric 24 Comments

Mark, we haven't seen your toaster in a while, can we get a pic to see he's okay?

I think my toaster’s been enjoying its time out of the spotlight.

Kamigawa vs Banana

New 14 Nov 2014 Asked by shemnon42 41 Comments

Would you rather design "Return to Kamigawa" or eat a bananna?

I have no personal ill will towards Kamigawa. I think it was a poorly designed block but I liked some of the things it was trying to do. Me telling you we’re not going back is me trying to be honest with all of you and explain the realities of the business. We don’t take big swings at things that failed horribly the first time out. I am willing to try to redo mechanics (a la chroma and devotion) but that is a much smaller risk.  So clearly I would make “Return to Kamigawa” before eating a banana. I just wouldn’t publish it. : )

Fan Engagement Appreciation

New 13 Aug 2014 Asked by tonyw36 49 Comments

I just want to say that I love that you take time out of your day to answer fan questions. You really are a model to all spokespersons for a brand because you truly care about your product and love spending time talking to your fan base about your product. It's passion and dedication like that that will keep Magic at the forefront of gaming for years to come

I’m happy so many people seem to enjoy this blog. It definitely keeps me from ever getting bored. : ) Thanks to everyone who keeps sending me questions.

Ethan Fleischer Acknowledgment

New 15 Apr 2014 Asked by godavarism 33 Comments

Shoutout to Ethan Fleischer. Journey Into Nyx is shaping up to be one of my favorite sets of the past five years. He hit his first design lead out of the park.

Ethan did a great job for his first time out. I’ll pass along the kind words.

Returning Mechanics Probability

New 28 Mar 2014 Asked by veenilla 13 Comments

You've said that popular planes are more likely to return than unpopular ones, but what about mechanics? Are mechanics that tested poorly less likely to be reused?

Absolutely. Less popular mechanics have a smaller chance of returning. That said, if a mechanic fits perfectly or we believe we didn’t execute it correctly the first time out and we could do better (such as chroma), it could come back.
