Land Destruction Effects Conundrum

New 12 Feb 2022 Asked by ruhruhrandy 38 Comments

Why does Wizards continue to print land destruction effects? I can pinpoint the exact least amount of fun I’ve ever had playing Magic in 17 years and the majority of them are playing against land destruction.

We’ve weakened it a lot since the early years. I’m looking at you Sinkhole and Strip Mine.

Sinkhole Cost Versus Land Destruction

New 26 Jan 2022 Asked by ticked-off-squirrel 31 Comments

Hi Mark!! In the card Who What When Where Why, the “where” option costs 3B.Does this mean sinkhole is undercosted? What’s your opinion on 2mv land destruction cards?

Sinkhole is definitely undercosted. We’ve moved away from three-drop land destruction in red, the primary color of land destruction. Also, remember each mini-card is costed knowing you have access to all the abilities.

Sinkhole and Black Color Pie

New 03 Jun 2021 Asked by deyuil 53 Comments

Is Sinkhole still part of the Black color pie? It's not a premier set, but Break the Ice in MH2 looks like a pie break in terms of modern design.

Black is still secondary, along with green, in land destruction. They’re a distant second as we don’t do a lot of land destruction, but still in color pie.

Red's Historical Hate

New 08 Jun 2016 Asked by genderlich-deactivated20211204 24 Comments

When has Red historically had colorless hate?

It’s been number one in land destruction and number two in artifact destruction since Alpha. (Okay, you could argue technically #2 due to Sinkhole but the intent was it was #1.)

Seismic Spike Rationale

New 11 May 2015 Asked by keith-cancel 22 Comments

Why is Seismic Spike find but a red sinkhole not?

Because you can’t cast Seismic Spike until you have access to four mana, two of which is Red. That’s very different than being able to cast it turn two.

Modern and Red Sinkhole

Can modern handle a red sinkhole?

No. Oh, not a developer.

Profile of Griefers

New 03 Sep 2014 Asked by commandersredzone 33 Comments

There is a portion of the MtG community that get the most enjoyment out of the game if they are causing others to be miserable: ie Sinkhole, Counterspell, Winter Orb, etc...what profile do they fit?

Most griefers are Timmy but there are Johnny and Spike griefers.

Land Destruction Debate

New 25 Mar 2014 Asked by l0cke17 41 Comments

I really don't believe that the majority of players hate Land Destruction. Since there are so many 1-2 cmc mana-accelerants why isn't there be a similar number of 2-3 cmc mana destruction spells to keep that in check? Stone Rain and Sinkhole just provide a crucial foil to those cards, and should be much more common. Or, better yet, just print cheaper non-basic LD cards, and only punish the greedy tournament decks, and let the casuals at the kitchen table ignore it since they use mostly basics.

The reason I bring up data is to try and be as transparent as I can about our motivations. If we honestly believed land destruction was something the majority of players enjoyed, we’d have more of it and at a higher power level. There is no reason for us to act against the interest of the majority of the players.

Counterspell In Standard

New 28 Feb 2014 Asked by solune44-blog 37 Comments

Hi MaRo. When are you going to re-introduce counterspell in standard ?? It's a simple, elegant design; the name is a perfect fit, and you could put it at any rarity without hurting NWO.

Sinkhole also fits all these requirements. It seems you’re missing power level as a concern. : )

Infect Land Destruction

New 09 Feb 2014 Asked by icculushfb42 129 Comments

Could you make cheap land destruction spells with infect effects attached to them? That would surely make everybody happy!

You’ve solved it. Poisonous Sinkhole
BB
Sorcery
Destroy target land and give it’s controller a poison counter. Now that would be popular. : )

Sinkhole Queries Increase

New 16 Aug 2013 Asked by keith-cancel 19 Comments

Do you get asked a lot about sinkhole.

No until very recently. My theory is that there’s a crowd that wants me to think Stone Rain is fine so they figure that if they keep asking about Sinkhole, I’ll start to think Stone Rain isn’t that bad.

Power Creep Discussion

New 15 Aug 2013 Asked by teluin 22 Comments

Recently, a thread was created on an MtG Legacy website titled: "sinkhole is bad and that makes me sad". I love the card Sinkhole, but the poster isn't exactly wrong about the card's power level either. I just mention this because of your comment on how power creep has been controlled for the last 10 years - it really hasn't. Yes I know examples can be named from early sets, but the same can be said for recent ones. Jace, Stoneforge, Delver, to name a few. Anyway, that's all.

Alpha had the power nine. Name nine cards made in the last five years that even come close to matching those nine in power.

Throwback Card Potential

New 11 Aug 2013 Asked by keith-cancel 17 Comments

Do you think its possible to have throw backs every now and then to some of the old powerful cards that set the boundaries. Like sinkhole or wasteland or counterspell or Hymn to Torach ect..I do not see whats wrong with printing cards like these from time to time.

Um, Lightning Bolt and Rancor.

Sinkhole Reprint

New 06 Aug 2013 Asked by keith-cancel 19 Comments

What kind of environment would allow for sinkhole to reprinted in standard?

One where R&D didn’t care about game balance. : ) It’s not remotely appropriate powerwise for Standard. We’re not even sure Stone Rain is ever appropriate so two mana land destruction is right out.

Land Destruction View

New 02 Aug 2013 Asked by keith-cancel 7 Comments

What is your view on players who like efficient land destruction? wasteland, strip mine, sinkhole, pillage ect..

They are a minority. What we’ve learned over the years is that deck strategies that revolve around one player doing something such that the other player never gets to play cards are very unpopular.

Red Sinkhole Possibility

New 07 Jul 2013 Asked by keith-cancel 11 Comments

Do you think it would be possible to print a red "sinkhole"?

If you’re asking for a “Destroy target land.” card that costs RR, then no.

Mana System Defense

New 30 Mar 2012 Asked by affinityforanime 3 Comments

You recently defended mana flood and mana screw as an important part of Magic. I don't see how these qualities of the game are defensible when you constantly say that not being able to play your spells is not fun. Please explain how such narrowly-designed cards as basic land could not or should not be rethought in order to fix a mana system that many players see as faulty.

The answer lies in variance. It’s very important that games don’t all work the same. The mana system is one of the most powerful things that helps do that. Of course, games where you don’t get mana are unfun but games where you get it late and just barely eke out a victory are some of the most awesome games of Magic. Luckily the former don’t tend to be long games. The reason I don’t put permission or land destruction in this camp is that it doesn’t create the variance I’m talking about. If we make land destruction too good, as an example, the vast majority of games played against it will result in one player not getting to play. Sinkhole and Strip Mine reduce variance.

Land Destruction Cards

New 09 Mar 2012 Asked by maromanofmydreams 3 Comments

Why don't we see aggressive land destruction cards anymore? I miss Molten Rain, Stone Rain, Thermakarst, and Sinkhole :)

Because the majority of Magic players don’t like them. Not being able to play = not fun. We still make land destruction just not at the same power level we once did. Counterspells are in a similar spot.
