Cats Domestication

"The majority of cats are domesticated." You and I clearly have very different definitions of domesticated. :)

Sanctuary Cat doesn’t live out in the wild. : )

Sanctuary Cat.

What card’s popularity surprised you a little?

Creature Types

New 31 Mar 2015 Asked by ekumeecht 27 Comments

Isn't it a flavor fail that Brimaz and Sanctuary Cat are the same creature type? What are the odds of adding "leonin" as a creature type and updating all the relevant creatures?

I believe having broader creature types makes for better gameplay. As is, each cat lord helps all the cards. Split them up and there are less cards made for that group.

Combat Logic

New 22 Mar 2014 Asked by greggbot 34 Comments

Why can't a 1/1 soldier token beat a 1/2 sanctuary cat? You'd think that with military training they'd at least be able to fight off a domesticated animal.

I think you’re thinking of an Earth cat.

Creature Strength Logic

can you explain why a sanctuary cat is physically stronger than a merfolk of the pearl trident?

Apparently you’ve never been in a backstreet brawl with one.

Cats in White

What makes cats white? I can understand leonin (strength of the pride), but normal cats (like Sanctuary Cat) make less sense...

They’re domesticated.

Flavor vs Simplicity

New 25 Oct 2013 Asked by bestquestion-blog 6 Comments

There are so many super simple vanilla cards in each set; why aren't more of them given "trinket text" to use them as a chance for more flavor? I think cards like Midnight Duelist are more flavorful than cards like Sanctuary Cat, and still would be in non-tribal sets.

Because trinket text defeats the point of no text - to be super simple.

Popularity of Cat Cards

Do the creative team dislike the unexpected popularity of Black Cat and Sanctuary Cat? Both are non-badass, 'cutesy' animals, and therefore beloved by a subset of your audience - just like squirrels!

Be careful not to convince the creative team not to do cats.

Sanctuary Cat Quirk

Why doesn't sanctuary cat have protection from rats?

Have you seen the rats from Innistrad?

Grizzly Bear Skills

New 15 May 2012 Asked by tnessfftto 1 Comments

I think all the people saying a trained human is a match for a grizzly bear have been watching that survival movie where the protagonist kills a bear with a stick in the climax. (I have absolutely no idea what it's called--do you?) Anyway, continue not listening to them. If a guy wants to take on a grizzly bear, he'd better team up with a Sanctuary Cat and have a 50/50 shot at living, depending on who runs faster. (My money's on the cat.)

I’ve actually read a bit on grizzly bears. Making a single one a 2/2 is probably unfair to the grizzly bear. They are quite fierce.

Sanctuary Cat Question

New 13 May 2012 Asked by relentlessasrats-blog 12 Comments

If a well trained human is only 1/1, how do you explain Sanctuary Cat?

Have you ever fought a Sanctuary Cat? For legal reasons, I can’t insist that you try.

Dinosaur Type Request

New 26 Apr 2012 Asked by mrcowbird 12 Comments

Thanks for reading. I am a biologist first and a Magic player second (if those were the only two things), and it hurts me to see dinosaurs called lizards. I don't expect creature types to perfectly match biological understanding. I accept, for instance, that Thalia and Kird Ape together receive no boosts from a Coat of Arms. But dinosaurs and lizards are barely even related! You might as well call Sanctuary Cat a boar. What is the chance we see the return of the dinosaur creature type?

What you fail to realize is that in the Magic multiverse, dinosaurs are lizards.

Card Power Ebb

New 24 Apr 2012 Asked by marilith 1 Comments

A couple of cards in Avacyn Restored are "strictly superior" (as always, we need quotes here because no card is always superior to another in all circumstances in Magic) to others in Dark Ascension, even at the same rarity. I'm thinking of Zealous Strike > Skillful Lunge, and Midnight Duelist > Sanctuary Cat. Is the reasoning here that Avacyn Restored won't be played with Dark Ascension in Limited, so this is okay? It's hard to avoid comparisons when the cards are within the same block.

To make a trading card game work, there is going to be an ebb and flow of card power. I get that it’s more noticeable when it’s in the same block, but as the sets weren’t going to be drafted together and the cards in question are more limited cards, we felt that it would be okay.

Sanctuary Cat's Popularity

Could you please ask me why the marketing sector or the sector that work with booster arts and such didn't put Sanctuary Cat as one of the arts in booster? Thanks in advance.

The popularity of Sanctuary Cat has caught us a bit by surprise.

Future Cat Cards?

New 03 Apr 2012 Asked by ptcee 9 Comments

With the huge popularity of Black Cat and Sanctuary Cat will we be seeing more cats in the future? I would love a blue cat, please and thank you.

We have taken notice of the huge popularity of Black Cat and Sanctuary Cat. Will that result in more cats in the future?  I hope so.

Cat Debate Neutrality

Where do you stand on the eternal struggle between Black Cat and Sanctuary Cat?

I don’t think I’m qualified to discuss the Mighty Cat Altercation. I’ll leave it to the experts.

Innistrad's Firearms

New 24 Mar 2012 Asked by togglerjim-blog-deactivated2021 1 Comments

A few cards in the Innistrad block depict traditional handguns, first time we've seen 'em since the early stretches of the game... any reason we're seeing them now? Considering how a token produced from Gather the Townsfolk that apparently has some sort of handgun can't take down a Sanctuary Cat, I'd question their relevance in the setting.

They’re not hangguns. They are small personal crossbows. There’s no gunpowder on Innistrad.

Cat Cards Demand

New 17 Mar 2012 Asked by ddi-pixelvenser-deactivated2012 16 Comments

My LGS ran out of Sanctuary Cats. They said that two guys ran into the store and bought 40 at once, leaving no copy behind... Next time you need to make a Isamaru to prove some point, just make a new cat!

Sanctuary Cat and Black Cat seem to have shown an untapped love for cats among Magic players. Something to think about.

Sanctuary Cat's Type

New 20 Feb 2012 Asked by fangfabio 5 Comments

Who gave Sanctuary cat the cat type? Design, development or the creative team? (I still don't understand how do you design a vanilla creature!)

I know Black Cat was designed as a cat. I’m not sure about Sanctuary Cat.  How do you design a vanilla creature?  You start like any other creature, but you stop after you set the power and toughness. :)
