Un-cards Oracle Updates

New 22 Oct 2022 Asked by flakmaniak 26 Comments

When did a bunch of old Un- cards get updated Oracle wordings? I just noticed it today on Rocket-Powered Turbo Slug. I know that for many years Un- cards didn't get Oracle updates at all; when did that change?

It happens when new Un-products come out.

More Pacts Desired

New 05 Jul 2022 Asked by su92 92 Comments

Can I request more Pacts (0 cost but you have to pay next turn), not necessarily in a Standard legal set? They are very cool designs.

I have a fondness for pacts as they’re based on Rocket-Powered Turbo Slug, but how do the rest of you feel? Do you want more pacts?

Turbo Slug's Pact Influence

New 02 Jul 2019 Asked by gabecampos89 94 Comments

"Yes, we had Rocket-Powered Turbo Slug and the Pacts, but there was a severe penalty for not paying off those debts." - I just realized Rocket-Powered Turbo Slug has the same functionality as the pacts. I looked at the release dates for Unhinged ('04) and Future Sight ('07), did the slug directly influence that cycle's creation?

Yes. The Pacts were directly inspired by the Turbo Slug.

Morph Mechanic Payment

New 02 Jul 2019 Asked by zanmor 56 Comments

Could Morph be reworked to use the stack but have paying for it occur after it is face up?

Magic doesn’t give you effects on credit. You have to pay for them first. : )Yes, we had Rocket-Powered Turbo Slug and the Pacts, but there was a severe penalty for not paying off those debts.

Turbo Slug Mechanics

Un-rules question: Rocket-Powered Turbo Slug's reminder text suggests that, unlike a Pact or Echo trigger, you are actually casting it as a spell the next turn. Does that mean it's a creature spell that can be countered while the creature is already on the battlefield?

The window to counter it is during the current turn not next turn.

Designing Rocket-Powered

New 14 Nov 2017 Asked by metaknight2040 33 Comments

Hi MaRo. In honor of Unstable previews finally starting I wanted to ask if you designed one of my favorite Magic cards of all time: Rocket-Powered Turbo Slug.

I did.

Super Haste Explained

New 12 Aug 2017 Asked by jonesie42 32 Comments

Does Rocket-Powered Turbo Slug have haste?

It has “super haste”, which is haste plus, so yes it has haste. Things that care about haste do treat super haste as haste.

Unstable Plane Characters

New 23 Jul 2017 Asked by rosencrypt 58 Comments

Will every card in Unstable be set on the new plane, or will some of them feature existing characters, like Urza's Hot Tub, Ladies' Knight, and Rocket-Powered Turbo Slug did?

80 to 85% take place on the new plane. The rest take place wherever to allow us to do parody and meta-humor.

Cross-Border Card Origins

New 07 Sep 2015 Asked by jacetheblogsculptor 16 Comments

Are there examples of cards that got pulled from silver border into black border? (Aside from cheese stands alone)

The Pact cycle from Future Sight was based on Rocket-Powered Turbo Slug from Unhinged and the split cards were originally in Unglued 2, the Un-set that got cancelled.

Super Haste Concept

New 11 Mar 2015 Asked by grinningdemon86 54 Comments

Rocket Powered Turbo Slug (My favorite uncard) has an ability that in design is very similar to the pacts. Could something akin to "Super Haste" work in non-un magic?

The pacts *was* us bringing Rocket-Powered Turbo Slug to black border.

The Silver Age Flash is the fastest of those listed.

Super Haste Possibility

New 18 Sep 2014 Asked by moontang13 29 Comments

Would something like Rocket-Powered Turbo Slug's Super haste be possible in black border? It seems like the Pacts in creature form.

It was the card that inspired the Pacts. We could probably make a slightly tweaked version in black border.

Defining Super Haste

New 10 May 2014 Asked by dankesteinphd 21 Comments

Explain to me what super haste is?

Super haste (This may attack the turn before you play it. (You may put this card into play from your hand, tapped and attacking, during your declare attackers step. If you do, you lose the game at the end of your next turn unless you pay this card’s mana cost during that turn.)) From the card Rocket-Powered Turbo Slug from Unhinged

Turbo Slug Payment

New 03 Mar 2014 Asked by thesalmonflyatdawn 11 Comments

Un rules question! Rocket-powered turbo slug says I have to pay the mana cost on the next turn, can I pay the cost in increments? (Eg rishadin port to tap a land so I pay r towards it and the extra 3 later in the turn)

You can pay it whenever you want during the turn, but when you pay a card’s cost you must pay it all at once.

Unrules Gameplay Question

New 14 Nov 2013 Asked by aazadan 10 Comments

Unrules question. Two people are playing with no 4 of rule. Person A plays a deck made up of 60 Chancelor of the Dross while Person B plays a deck consisting of 60 Rocket-Powered Turbo Slug. Person A goes first. On their upkeep the Chancelors deal 21 damage, however the slug states it attacks the turn before it is played. Can the slugs attack before person A's upkeep?

No. They can only attack during its controller’s turn.

Turbo Slug Mechanic

Will Rocket-Powered Turbo Slug ability be ever a legit mechanic?

Future Sight had a cycle of Pacts based on Rocket-Powered Turbo Slug so yes.

Nope. What Un-card she we push for the next big animated kids’ movie? : )

Pixar's Turbo Inspiration

New 30 Jun 2013 Asked by blackmetalbear 22 Comments

How do you feel about Pixar just making a movie named Turbo, that is literally about a Rocket-Powered Turbo Slug?

I’m rummaging through Un-sets for more licensing opportunities. : )

Clone Attack Clarification

New 08 May 2013 Asked by vedalkensamurai 5 Comments

Can you attack with a Clone of a Rocket-Powered Turbo Slug the turn before you cast it? If so, do you have to pay 3R or 3U during your next turn (reminder text suggests 3R)? If 3R, is this a good way to get a Progenitor Mimic out cheap? If so, can you attack with the token copies the turn before they come into play? If so, do you have to pay their mana costs or not?

EDIT: I got this wrong the first time so let me get this correct. Superhaste is not haste. What it does is it allows you to put the card from your hand and attack with it the turn before you play it. By the time you can clone it, it is too late to be able to invoke the super haste. So, you spend 3U and get a red 3/1 with super haste, an ability you will not be able to use. You do not though have to spend 3R next turn.

Rocket-Powered Turbo Slug

New 25 Mar 2013 Asked by stanley91 3 Comments

"By the way, I've gotten quite a number of e-mails chiding me for “wasting” this card in Unhinged rather than putting it into normal Magic. My response: dudes, it got rejected from Unglued for rules concerns. Unglued! This is not the normal Magic mechanic you are looking for." This is what you said about Rocket-Powered Turbo Slug. Was Future Sight's Pact cycle already created when you wrote that un-column?

What I’m allowed to do in black-bordered sets keeps evolving evident by the fact that things I once had to do in Un-sets is now allowed in black border.
