Rescue from the Underworld

Excitement About Unfinity Cards

New 30 Nov 2021 Asked by andymontalbon 39 Comments

Saw in Half is the coolest black creature trick since Rescue from the Underworld, so glad it's Commander legal. Cards that use death in unexpected ways are great. Excited for Unfinity!

I’m excited to show you more cards (although sadly, not until previews).

Upsides in Cheaper Reanimation

New 26 Nov 2021 Asked by dunharrow-le-dingue 46 Comments

I just want to mention that Unburial Rites was highly played in Standard and Modern, and that 5 mana is a fine rate for reanimation if there is upside (flashback, in this case). I really liked Rescue from the Underworld and played it a lot in standard. I don't think we need cheaper reanimation, but it would be nice to see options with more upside.

I’ll see what other upsides we can add.

Designing for Theros

New 17 Dec 2020 Asked by dunharrow-le-dingue 35 Comments

Why was Rescue from the Underworld one of the first cards you designed for Theros? I love the card and the flavour of Orpheus' journey to the underworld.. but I find it surprising that you chose this particular myth right off the bat.

It was an early card, but far from the first. We designed a lot of top-down Greek mythology cards.

Orpheus and Reprints

New 19 Jan 2020 Asked by gophilipbowles 49 Comments

As someone else disappointed by the lack of Orpheus in an Underworld set, did you consider reprinting Rescue from the Underworld? I like seeing rarely-reprinted cards in new draft and Standard contexts, and it seems Theros has remarkably few reprints despite good opportunities to reprint Theros-themed cards (e.g. Fanatic of Mogis to complete the almost-cycle of uncommon devotion ETB creatures) and non-Theros cards that synergise with the set mechanics and flavour (e.g. Sinister Concoction).

I’m pretty sure Rescue from the Undereworld was in the set when we handed off vision design. I don’t know why it got cut in set design. Probably because escape was hitting this flavor.

Orpheus Card Discussion

New 16 Jan 2020 Asked by visioncrown 47 Comments

Hey Mark, was there ever a plan for an Orpheus top-down card in Theros Beyond Death? He's one of my favorite mythological figures, and it feels weird for a set so tied to returning from the underworld to not feature one of the original inspirations for that story.

Origibal Theros has Rescue from the Underworld which was an Orpheus reference. It was so beloved, we didn’t try to top it.

Theros Design Insights

New 09 Dec 2019 Asked by dunharrow-le-dingue 63 Comments

Does Theros Beyond Death have any amazing top down designs like Rescue from the Underworld?

Theros Beyond Death does have a bunch of fun top-down designs including one that I really liked that got cut during development in original Theros. Ethan tweaked it and resubmitted it and this time it stayed.

Black Blink Effect

New 20 Nov 2019 Asked by simplymikus 39 Comments

Could Black get a blink-like effect where it destroys a creature then immediately returns it to the Battlefield? Or returns it at end of turn?

We did that with Rescue from the Underworld.

Rescue Thematic Fit

New 16 Nov 2019 Asked by rossintr 42 Comments

Why specifically is Rescue from the Underworld not a white effect?

Its component pieces are black not white. The combined effect is admittedly like flickering, but we felt it was a good choice for a bend in Theros.

Color Pie Mechanics

New 27 Sep 2019 Asked by clockworkchasmfiend 34 Comments

Could black/green ever get a flicker/blink-like effect, except it destroys the permanent and returns it from the graveyard?

Rescue from the Underworld did this, but it was a bend we did because it was a flavor home run. If the right design for the right set comes along it’s a possibility, but it’s not our goal to put flickering in more colors.

Black Blink Mechanic

New 18 Jun 2019 Asked by gynoidpoet 30 Comments

Black being part of an ETB archetype got me thinking. Could black get "sacrifice a creature, then immediately reanimate it" as a sort of black blink?

We’ve done sacrifice, then reanimate at end of turn with Rescue from the Underworld. It’s not something we do often.

Ninjitsu Mechanics Color

New 11 Dec 2018 Asked by tbjanowski 29 Comments

Me and friends have been brainstorming blue black overlap and it's very little (other than things the colors dont really do anymore). We are in disagreement could you help; would ninjitsu from the graveyard instead of the hand be pure black or a black blue ability? I think its black blue. But others say that rescue from the underworld is effectively the same so it's pure black?

Ninjitsu from the graveyard would be black and not blue.

Temporary Zone Effects

New 04 Feb 2017 Asked by intercontinentalballisticmoose 21 Comments

A spell with a non-blink temporary zone changing effect already exists, if i'm interpreting what that person was asking for correctly: Rescue from the Underworld. Not quite as immediate as most blinks, since you have to wait for your next upkeep to get your stuff back, but i've found it to at the very least be high value in edh!

Good point.

Card Design Props

New 07 Nov 2016 Asked by trans-humanish 25 Comments

The column on R&D slang led to me rereading the column on lenticular design which ended with Rescue From the Underworld. I just wanted to say that it went from one of my least favorite cards when I started to my favorite, so props to whoever made it!

The card was made in an Innistrad design meeting where we did top down designs.EDIT: Oops. I meant Theros.

Unique Card Creation

New 05 Mar 2015 Asked by gonzoron 31 Comments

In your DTW on Development, you said sometimes you have to fight to save a card because the current set is the only opportunity you'll have to make it. Can you give some examples?

Chained to the Rocks and Rescue from the Underworld are both cards that could only have been made in Theros block.

Bending vs Breaking

New 02 Jan 2015 Asked by longtimegonemtgo 45 Comments

You've posted recently about how you are fine with bending the color pie, but are adamantly against breaking it. Can you explain the difference between bending and breaking here? How do you draw that line?

Bending the color pie is where you let a color do something it normally doesn’t but it’s not deviating too far from what the color can normally do. Red doesn’t normally get Time Walk but we allowed it Final Fortune because it does get things like Relentless Assault and it is a nice red twist to the ability. The key to color bleeding is it still stays true to the general essence of what colors can do pushing in a place that doesn’t cause long term problems. Color breaking is when you let a color do something it’s not supposed to do. You are filling in a color’s weakness or defining it in such a way that it contradicts something key about the color. Every block does color bending because Magic is always changing its focus and we want all the colors to play in the area that the block is about. For instance, Rescue from the Underworld was key to capturing the feel of Theros. It isn’t exactly how black normally functions but the essence of what it was doing was elements black can do and the overall feel was very black. Hornet Sting, in contrast, gave an ability to green (direct damage to creatures) that green is supposed to be poor at. It didn’t add much to the set it came in and was mostly only flavorful unto itself. Even though it was low powered in contrast to other colors, it still ended up getting played in tournament sideboards because it filled in a weakness Green had and kept players from having to go to another color.
