MKM Complexity Feedback

New 08 Feb 2024 Asked by serialrobinson 56 Comments

Hi Mark,I have been playing MKM draft and feel like my head is spinning. The level of complexity in this set is way over the top compared to what the baseline should be. I often look at the board and have to read cards like 3 times to figure out what they do. It honestly feels a little like Lorwyn, and it's a big turn off to me enjoying this set. I don't really have a question, just hoping that this isn't the level that things will be at going forward with the new play booster experience.

How are others feeling about the baseline complexity of Murders at Karlov Manor?

Un-Rules Card Interactions

New 20 Dec 2023 Asked by hyralc 28 Comments

An un-rules ruling(s) that came up in a game I really played recently. I have Another Aether Vortex. My opponent's library's top card is an Augment creature. There's a host on their battlefield. A. Can the augment attack since it kind of has stats? B. What if anything happens with the augment's abilities? C. Can it augment the host?

Augment cards function similar to auras. If they are somehow on the battlefield, but not attached to another permanent, they are destroyed by state based effects and go to the graveyard. If you have Yet Another Aether Vortex, you’ll get your turn over the top card of your library and if it’s a permanent, it will also be on the battlefield. And no, it will be too late to augment it to a host.

Unfinity and Community Excitement

New 03 Jul 2022 Asked by basketofpuppies 64 Comments

After watching Spice8Rack’s video with your appearance, I’m so much more excited for Unfinity!!! I was already hyped, but your comments about it pushed me over the top.

Happy to hear that.I’m very excited for you to see it too.

Power Level of Reprint Set

New 11 Jun 2022 Asked by ginkasai 51 Comments

Why does power level have to be at a constant level for this hypothetical product though? If its entirely reprints and doesn't introduce new cards to formats, and doesn't have a limited format, why cant it be super over the top power level? If there was a booster product that was entirely bomb rare and mythic reprints, and priced at normal booster prices, wouldn't it be the best selling product wotc has ever made?

Okay, one last one and I swear I’ll stop talking about this. All booster packs at the same price have to be the same power level (roughly) or the higher power one will sell and the rest won’t. Our goal isn’t to make only one product the players want to buy.

Umezawa's Jitte Templating

New 04 Sep 2021 Asked by popcornbunni 29 Comments

RE: Templating of Umezawa's Jitte -- The original version had the -1/-1 mode as "add BB", but the rules around putting a mana ability inside a nested modal ability were finicky, so it was changed to another black-aligned mechanic: giving -1/-1, which is what made it over the top as a recurring powerful removal.

Artist Appreciation

New 29 Jan 2020 Asked by yggdrasild49 44 Comments

Wait Mark. Ron Spencer is my favorite MTG artist ever, and I don’t know how to thank you for bringing back the Infernal Spawn family (and his unique style)!!! I’m so excited about Unsanctioned, but this pushes it over the top!

I was excited that we could make it happen. It’s one of the things I was bummed didn’t make it into Unstable.

Simic's Evolutionary Shift

New 11 Jan 2019 Asked by phyrexiathings 98 Comments

The creatures simic makes have gotten a lot sillier compared to the first ravnica, and feel a lot like the creatures from unstable, which are over the top weird and mix matched, compared with organisms meant for biological perfection. Compare simic sky swallower and sharktocrab. Why the shift?

Because the Simic fans like it.

World Design Philosophy

New 22 Apr 2018 Asked by smoqueen 59 Comments

With regards to "X planet" qualities, you say that you don't want players to have no idea what to expect. I don't think that's very true; I think that you're trapping yourself into assuming that players want recognizable features of a plane when really they just respond to quality.

Let’s say we made Fornavia which was Kaladesh, Amonkhet and Ixalan combined with each being a separate continent. Does that make the game better? Does that make the plane better? When we say Return to Fornavia, are you excited? You don’t know what it means. I’m just pointing out that identification of worlds is more important than a sense of individual world depth, because we want to create a connection between game play and world flavor. The depth is in the multiverse, not the individual planes. The biggest problem we’re having with Dominaria (and in general the reception has been over the top positive) is that players expected some attribute they loved of the world and we simply didn’t have enough space to fit it all in.

Silver-Border Reprints

New 03 Mar 2018 Asked by mort459 26 Comments

If you ever do get silver bordered cards in a mostly black border reprint set, would it be cards that mechanically work in black border but are just a little over the top (i.e. Blast from the Past or Who/what/when/where/why)? silver border is fun but i feel like that is a fair compromise.

The main issue is not a play issue but a printing one.

Mine, Mine, Mine Evaluation

New 03 Oct 2017 Asked by jovianhomarid 44 Comments

What's non-blacboardable about Mine, Mine Mine! ? Just the potential for a combo breaking formats?

It’s an example of something that in the day was over the top but since has become something black border is just willing to do.

Commander Product Opinion

New 21 Oct 2016 Asked by remasuri 55 Comments

I wonder if asking for special legendary cards is a bit over the top in general. It's a game and you have to work with the limitations. Asking to design all the things you want seems a bit lazy. It's also why I don't like Commander products. Why not work with the things in the game? But I'm in the minorityx here I guess.

I’m not sure you are.

Modern Affinity Consideration

New 09 Sep 2016 Asked by manaleaker-blog-deactivated2023 51 Comments

When designing Kaladesh, did you keep in mind that modern affinity is a thing and avoid creating cards that would put that deck even further over the top?

Modern doesn’t dictate what we can or cannot print. If it causes a problem, Modern has a banned list to address it.

Doomsday Trivia

New 06 Sep 2015 Asked by acclimation6 38 Comments

Today is my birthday, and I was hoping for some trivia on Doomsday. If not, I just want to wish everyone a happy weekend! :D

Okay. He killed Superman many years ago. Oh, you meant the Magic card not the super villain. Doomsday was designed as a crazy over the top weird win condition. Turns out it’s a little too consistent in certain formats and has been banned. Happy Birthday!

Reprints and Modern Impact

New 03 Oct 2014 Asked by thegraylemon 16 Comments

Does the existence of modern ever stop something from being reprinted in standard? For instance, I doubt Invigorate would be all that great in standard but it might push modern infect over the top.

It’s something development thinks about but if it was something Standard really needed, I think development would use it and then see if it truly causes a problem in Modern. If it did, there are ways to address it.

Color Card Design Space

New 14 Sep 2014 Asked by mollib 45 Comments

Why is there more design space for five color cards then for four color cards?

Because five color cards get to just do awesome, over the top things while four-color cards have to explain why they are four-colored.

Legend Rule Passion

New 24 May 2013 Asked by lrats 16 Comments

Some of the comments about the legend rule are Insane. I think it will be a good change for the game. I understand people being upset but some of these comments are way over the top.

Magic is something people are very passionate about and when you make changes to something people care very deeply about, you are going to get some very strong and emotional reactions.

Unhinged Draft Query

New 23 Nov 2012 Asked by pookel 3 Comments

Since Un sets are getting mentioned a lot, I have a rules question that came up in an Unhinged draft that I'd like your opinion on. (I know, silver-bordered cards don't really work with the rules well, but I still think it's an interesting problem.) My opponent cast Yet Another Aether Vortex. I flipped over the top card of my library to reveal Old Fogey. At the beginning of my turn, when Old Fogey phased out, would the card underneath him be revealed and in play? And where does he come back in?

Yes, the card underneath gets revealed. Old Fogey phases back into play on top of the library making that new top card no longer on the battlefield as it is now covered.

Jace Character Depth

New 03 Sep 2012 Asked by ghostdaddotcx-deactivated201212 12 Comments

I think a lot of people (self included) just don't like Jace the character. Being a brooding badass makes him kind of obnoxious and one-dimensional. That one-dimensionality is grating when he's made the public face of Magic. To give a really over the top example, imagine if Magic was represented by Poochy, the Rockin' Dog from the Simpsons. People resent that kind of stuff because it suggests marketing has a low opinion of them.

I would suggest reading some of the novels, comics, etc. Jace is a multi-faceted layered character. As a guy who studied writing, he’s one of the characters I would most like to use if I were writing Magic stories. Also, he’s the most popular according to our market research.

DotP Animation Choices

New 22 Jun 2012 Asked by iamphrost 1 Comments

So I bought Dotp2013 (the first time I've bought the game) and I'm kind of dissapointed we don't get anything over the top like creatures popping up out of the card and doing battle. I was hoping since there was a limited card pool that it would be more like the Yugioh tv show and I'd be able to see goblin piledriver beat up Garruk's Packleader or something. Any chance this will be in future versions?

We’ve chosen to focus our energies into gameplay over graphics. Obviously we’re making the cards look as great as possible but we’re not doing a lot of animation.
