Bonding Over Magic

New 25 May 2024 Asked by ranryu 8 Comments

i see others submitting stories so i’ll throw my Helm of the Host in the ring:coming near to the end of college, i was working at a board game bar. it was a slow night, not a lot of people, but two folks walked in. they sat down and started cracking some jumpstart. i watched from behind the bar, made some small talk about how my brother taught me to play over a decade prior, and how it was something we bonded over. they looked around at the slow night and asked me to sit down. one of them just moved to town and the other was helping, but was also trying to find some friends. we spent all night cracking through near a whole box of jumpstart and laughing, eventually leading to us making friends. far and away, one of the best friends i’ve ever made, some of the best memories i’ve ever had, and i just finished tuning up my Eloise, Nephalia Sleuth zombie typal deck for game night before typing this out. every post and ask you answer reminds me why i play! your dedication and love for what’s built here makes the game feel alive. thank you mark! happy birthday!

Thanks, and glad you shared your story.

Are there currently any plans to go back and update creatures like Eloise, Nephalia Sleuth to be detectives?

Not currently.

Detective Type Errata?

New 29 Jul 2023 Asked by neededaccounttosendasks 79 Comments

With the reveal from the Dr. Who commander decks that the creature type "Detective" is being added to MTG, can we expect Dogged Detective to get errata to update their creature type? What about cards with "Sleuth" in the name from Innistrad like Daring Sleuth, Woodland Sleuth, or Eloise, Nephalia Sleuth?

Errata is more likely when a creature type gets focus in a premier set than in a supplemental one, especially if it’s just on a handful of cards.

Plane Exploration Potential

New 04 Dec 2019 Asked by ninthsword 51 Comments

Hello Mark! I hope your day is going well. What are the odds of us getting to see as-of-yet unkown parts of exisiting planes? Will we ever see whereever across the sees all the ships in Nephalia sale to, or what Kaladesh is like beyond the reach of the consulate? I agree planes should have consistent identities, but just like we can explore new facets of those identities (e.g. Eldritch Horror Innistrad or Cold War Ravnica), can we explore new settings for those identities?

Return visits can explore new facets of a plane. Theros Beyond Death, for instance, is showing off the Underworld.

Psionic Vampires Mention

New 04 Jul 2017 Asked by youwillneverdiscoverwhoiam 57 Comments

FYI: Magic already has some psionic vampires: Moroii and Szadek, lord of secrets from Ravnica: city of guilds; Mirko Vosk from Dragon's maze; Duskmantle seer from Gatecrash; and Jeleva, Nephalia's scourge from Commander 2013. All of them are Dimir colours, except Jeleva, who is in Grixis colours.

Legendary Reprints

New 04 Feb 2016 Asked by ajohnnygoldmain 75 Comments

Someone reblogged a picture of Jeleva, Nephalia's Scourge, and with SOI coming up it got me thinking. Are legendary creatures created for supplemental products fair game for inclusion (as reprints or new cards) in a return to their home plane?

Absolutely.

Nephalia Drownyard Insights

New 04 Oct 2015 Asked by tehseek3r 28 Comments

It's my turn for birthday trivia! Can I have some on the card that solidified me as a magic player: nephalia drownyard?

We decided to make a cycle of lands that mechanically tied to two allied colors and helped the tribe that was connected to them. Blue/Black was Zombies so we looked for something that would help that deck. The Blue Zombies - the Frankenstein monster ones - required dead bodies to build from and the Black zombies - the Dawn of the Dead ones - had ways to get themselves out of the graveyard, so the self mill seemed like a good fit. Happy Birthday!

Human Nature AVR

New 18 Apr 2012 Asked by aciddarling 4 Comments

AVR Q : Nephalia Smuggler suggests that the humans are still fairly corrupt and desperate despite Avacyn's return. Is this a them throughout the set?

Just because you’re not on the monster’s side doesn’t mean you’re a goody two shoes.
