Jumpstart Pack Value

New 21 Feb 2020 Asked by verygoodtom 34 Comments

Do jumpstart packs have more than 15 cards that aren't basic lands? If not, I don't understand the high price point. Basic lands are worth extremely little.

You need to think of this product more like a preconstructed deck than a randomized booster. The instant playability is a lot of the value of it and the basic lands are essential to that being true.

Drafting Jumpstart Packs

New 21 Feb 2020 Asked by lurking-mtg-dnd 50 Comments

You've said in the past that "players will draft anything that comes in boosters". Do you think there's a way to draft with Jumpstart? How much was it designed knowing that might happen?

Here’s Jumpstart draft. Open two boosters for every player (have an even amount) so players can see the cards with the themes and colors. Each person chooses a pack. Then snake back and each person picks their second pack. For example, if you have four drafters, here’s the pick order:Drafter #1Drafter #2Drafter#3Drafter #4Drafter #4 Drafter #3Drafter #2Drafter #1It’s a fun and very fast draft.

Jumpstart Mono-Color Packs

New 21 Feb 2020 Asked by arandomstringofcharacters 28 Comments

Is it a fair assumption that -- as you have to mash two independent packs together an still have a decent mana base -- that the Jumpstart packs will be mono-color?

Most are monocolor. I believe they said a few high rarity ones are two-color.

Jumpstart Release Timing

New 21 Feb 2020 Asked by destroyer-of-worlds-265 38 Comments

Why releasing jumpstart this year? Why not just release it next year as the inovation product?

It makes use of a lot of Core 2021 cards.

Jumpstart Booster Pricing

New 21 Feb 2020 Asked by drewblive380 49 Comments

I know you can't be super specific, but you've mentioned already phyrexian as a hypothetical, will this set be higher priced per booster, like other reprint heavy premium sets? Or will it considering the '8 - 9 lands per pack' be priced similarly to other draft boosters? Also how limited of a run is this? And will it contain an ad card?

On the stream today, they said that Jumpstart will be “a little more than draft boosters”. Remember that each booster has 20 cards, a 1/3 chance of getting more than one rare, and a basic land with brand new art.

2020 Innovation Products

New 21 Feb 2020 Asked by gsjbuffalo 45 Comments

Does Jump Start count as an innovation product for this year? If so, are we getting officially two (3 if you count Unsanctioned) innovation products?

Commander Legends is the official “innovative product” for 2020, but Jumpstart can be thought of as an unofficial one.

Jumpstart Basic Lands

New 21 Feb 2020 Asked by towel-guy 34 Comments

I'm confused about the basic lands of jumpstart, are there one or several in a pack? if more than one do all of them have the same art?

There are numerous basic lands but only one per pack of the new art.

Design Space Concerns

New 21 Feb 2020 Asked by 22bebo 53 Comments

I am seeing a weird amount of worry that Magic is going through it's design space too quickly. This seems to be in relation to JumpStart. So, do you think Magic is going to burn through all it's design space for both actual card designs and unique ways to play anytime soon?

Magic’s design space is just fine. Jumpstart is exploring with new ways to play. That is a deep, deep well.

Product Name Confusion

New 21 Feb 2020 Asked by haaaaaaaaave-you-met-ted 25 Comments

Is Jumpstart the official name for the Mystery boosters?

No, different product.

Design Overlap

New 21 Feb 2020 Asked by shm128iii 32 Comments

Both Unsanctioned and JumpStart have a similar "mash two different sets of cards together" mechanic going on. Was there any overlap in their development at all? Did one inspire the other?

They were designed independently as far as I know.

Land Card Proportions

New 21 Feb 2020 Asked by zanmor 29 Comments

Jumpstart has 1 themed basic land in each pack. Can you tell us how many other cards in the packs are basic lands? Presumably 8 or 9 need to be lands so shuffling two packs into a 40 card deck works.

It’s the correct proportion so the deck plays well.

Does JumpStart have Jump-start?

No. : )

Product Innovation

New 21 Feb 2020 Asked by zanmor 51 Comments

JumpStart looks hella cool and I immediately want a silver border version! If Commander Legends is the innovation product for 2020, what slot is this in? Are you doing multiple innovation products this year?

We did it because it was a cool thing to do. I’m not sure what slot it was considered. This is the third product I was exited about.

Jumpstart vs Rebound

New 08 Dec 2018 Asked by kogar15 22 Comments

Just listened to the podcast on izzet and while i think jumpstart is a great fit did r&d ever consider rebound? It seems like a natural connection for the "spells matter" guild theme as well as being flavorful. And as jeskai showed in khans it wouldve made a decent bridge between izzet and boros. Though i while admit it wouldn't have played as closely with dimir, when it came to surveil and jumpstart. Rebound would fit great with the card advantage route that dimir and izzet share.

We talked about rebound. It wasn’t as synergistic as we wanted.

Mission Briefing Query

New 13 Oct 2018 Asked by krazytoukan 36 Comments

Why is Mission Briefing double blue? I get the surveil mechanic meaning it would have to be Dimir, but you've said multiple times that if you were to redo Snapcaster it would be a red card. Why not make it so you have to jumpstart the card you play? Or a jumpstarter mage? Why do you hate us red mages? I thought you were one of the League.

Blue, black and red have all done casting of spells out of the graveyard. Red tends to grant them flashback which wasn’t available in Guilds of Ravnica.

Mentor and Jumpstart

New 09 Sep 2018 Asked by venalvizier-blog 41 Comments

I can see the synergy between most of the guild mechanics in GRN, but how exactly do Mentor and Jumpstart go together?

It had to do with what effects we put on Junpstart cards in red.

Jumpstart Mechanic Decision

New 01 Sep 2018 Asked by goldnight-catfishgator 37 Comments

Given that the cost requires discarding a card, was it considered to have Jumpstart NOT exile the graveyard spell that gets cast?

Having had a set with buyback in it, I’m pretty sure it wasn’t considered.
