Indestructibility

Flowstone Mechanic Update

New 02 Jan 2020 Asked by overflowchute 22 Comments

Just to confirm, the Flowstone effect would be considered a straight up break these days, right? Do you think you could rationalize it as a bend in the right set? I imagine nowadays you'd prefer to just have an effect that removes indestructibility ala Hour of Devastation for any sort of similar effect vs opponents

Red could flowstone (+N/-N) itself but probably not other creatures.

Sudden Spoiling Mechanics

New 21 Nov 2019 Asked by troacctid 30 Comments

Re: Sudden Spoiling, before Indestructible became a keyword, it could remove an ability that said "CARDNAME is indestructible," as seen on Darksteel Colossus, but if the indestructibility was granted by another card's effect, such as Darksteel Forge, it would remain.

Sudden Spoiling Explained

New 20 Nov 2019 Asked by chibinyanta 63 Comments

I'm not sure if it's still allowable nowadays, but in the color pie's favorite block Black did get Sudden Spoiling which removes indestructibility.

Ah, Time Spiral block, the gift that keeps on giving. Time Spiral, the set about the past, did this thing where it referenced cards that did something currently out of color pie (at the time) that had been done in the past. Sudden Spoiling is referencing the Arabian Nights card Sorceress Queen, the first card to ever have the effect. The ability had since moved to white and blue, but you know, Time Spiral. So no, that’s not a black effect. Also, at the time it was made, it didn’t remove indestructible because it wasn’t a keyword yet. (Yes, it was used, but not yet as a keyword.)

Mechanical Color Pie

Is there a list somewhere of abilities that are primary/secondary/tertiary in all colors, like Scry and Indestructibility?

Scorpion God Feedback

New 19 Jun 2017 Asked by theycallmejokke 84 Comments

Hey Mark, while the The Scorpion God do indeed seems like a fun mechanical creature, it having zero of the trappings of previous gods (Theros, or Amonkhet) indestructibility, nor a prerequisite for being a creature makes it feel meh for me personally. Now it's just a big crature that have had the god creature type slapped on to it, which I find sad.

Think hard to kill rather than the narrower Indestructible.

Gideon's Abilities

New 27 May 2017 Asked by birdofablackfeather 43 Comments

"His indestructibility is magic." Isn't he also a Hieromancer? He learnt it from Warden Hixus, right? Though he seems to never use it in the story...

He is. We don’t always specify when magic is being used. Some of Gideon’s abilities have magical enhancements.

Planeswalkers' Magic

New 27 May 2017 Asked by theycallmejokke 76 Comments

frikkinerd-blog asked: Are there Planeswalkers who can't use magic? (Besides Planeswalking, of course.) Not so far. - Weeell Gideon pretty much just punches things, unless he is using Punch-o-mancy of cause. ;P

His indestructibility is magic.

Is "loses indestructibility until end of turn" the new "can't be regenerated" ?

Yes.

Gideon Vulnerabilities

New 13 Nov 2016 Asked by lazcarno 138 Comments

Gideon isn't indestructible in the same way Superman or a darksteel creature is. His magic makes him indestructible, but he can run out of magic just like anyone else. Like how Chandra can't produce infinite fire or Liliana can't create infinite zombies.

Gideon has to turn on his indestructibility. If you can surprise him, you can hurt him.

Regeneration Replacement

New 12 Nov 2016 Asked by swamp-thoughtseize-go 26 Comments

With limited indestructibility replacing regen will we see cards that would have had 'cant be regenerated' in newer sets have an effect that ignores indestrictibility?

We very rarely make “can’t be regenerated” any more (well, before we phased out regeneration).

Indestructible vs Regeneration

New 12 Nov 2016 Asked by theycallmejokke 41 Comments

I'm not super trilled with the idea of indestructible superseding regeneration Mark, Superman, or Gideon is indestructible, Deadpool, or a troll have regeneration the two words just conjures two very different images in my mind.

Sometimes gameplay has to trump flavor. Regeneration was confusing and didn’t match its name (it was more a buff). Limited indestructibility has similar gameplay (although not 100%) with way less confusion.

Indestructibility in Green

New 18 Sep 2016 Asked by spaismanspif 29 Comments

Is single-turn indestructibility going to be in green as well as black (like regeneration was)? Or do you think hexproof covers that area?

Green has access to it if it needs it. Note that Green already had access to indestructibility.

White's Removal Restrictions

New 28 Dec 2015 Asked by lordofgeeks 16 Comments

"White works best when it’s answers are restricted or answerable." I thought white gave up card advantage to have answers to any problem. If white can't exile creatuers, what is it supposed to do against Indestructibility?

White can exile creatures. I just like individual White removal cards to have restrictions. (For example, “Exile target attacking or blocking creature.”)

Indestructible Query

New 06 Sep 2015 Asked by deetsposts 35 Comments

It's easy to settle this. Pinch yourself. Are you indestructible?!

One could feel pain yet still be indestructible. Admittedly, it’s a suckier form of indestructibility.

Bypassing Indestructibility

New 13 Aug 2015 Asked by zulkirjhor 51 Comments

You use to print a lot of destruction spells that prevent regeneration. Thankfully you have pulled away with those, but its nice to have to occasional answer to regeneration and you occasionally give us one which is great... will we ever see destruction spells that ignore indestructibility?

It’s called “exile”. : )

Mono Green Indestructibility

New 23 May 2015 Asked by cosmotable 16 Comments

Prior to Theros, the only mono green cards with indestructibility were a few rare creatures and Withstand Death. Since Theros we've had Mortal's Resolve, Roar of Challenge, Inspiring Call, and Temur Sabertooth. Seems noteworthy.

Green hybrid cards count.

Indestructibility in Green

New 23 May 2015 Asked by cosmotable 26 Comments

I've notice that indestructibility is now appearing on some green instants and sorceries. I'm always interested to hear about the little shifts magic makes over time. What prompted this one?

Indestructible has been showing up in Green for quite a while. Green can have a pretty tough hide.

Keyword Nuances

New 18 Jan 2015 Asked by monopurplecontraptions 54 Comments

I know this is nitpicking, but shouldn't permanents have "indestructibility" rather than "indestructible"?

They should also have flight rather than flying. Welcome to the fun world of keywords. : )

Regeneration vs Indestructible

New 29 Nov 2014 Asked by todoesgraciosocuandolohacehitler 27 Comments

Is there any reason -other than flavor- to not just replace Regeneration with Indestructible or "[Cost]: [Card name] gains indestructible until end of turn"?

“Other than flavor” is a big deal. Skeletons and trolls wouldn’t fit. Also, mechanically, we don’t tend to use indestructibility often in black, one of the two regeneration colors.

Naming 'Indestructible'

New 24 Aug 2013 Asked by chardish 5 Comments

Why did you name the keyword "indestructible" and not "indestructibility"? "Target creature gains indestructibility" reads so much more naturally...

Indestructible did not start out as a keyword but just an English word used to describe a state of a card.
