Hideaway

Threshold Errata Decision

New 10 Jul 2024 Asked by lil-cheez 10 Comments

Why Threshold wasn't given the same errata as Hideaway and renamed "Threshold N"?
So you could've used as it was in the past (threshold 7) or like the "current" one (threshold 8)

We want to be consistent and not have two sets in the same format using different numbers.

Updating Game Mechanics

New 12 Mar 2024 Asked by thenuclearotaku 28 Comments

Follow up to my recent question about upgrading mechanics: like I said, it's become more of a recent trend to either introduce new mechanics as upgrades of older ones (Disguise, Cascade, Blitz) or even just tweaking old mechanics to make them a bit more intuitive to use (Hideaway, Amass, Phasing). Is this a conscious and active effort on R&D's part? Or is it more a product of the game's long lifespan? I.e. you can only create so many new mechanics before you have to start reinventing the wheel, so to speak.

Design technology keeps improving and the game keeps adapting. Good mechanics can fall out of favor due to changes, so updating them is just good design practice.

Cascade vs Discover

New 26 Dec 2023 Asked by vargenhk 38 Comments

The difference between Cascade and Discover seems about the same as the difference between how Hideaway used to work and how it works as of NEO. Why did you update Hideaway but replace Cascade? Is it because Cascade is a more popular mechanic than Hideaway was? Is there some mechanical reason? Did the Hideaway update go poorly?

It has to do with what the exact changes are and how many cards of the original version get used. Also, the change could happen if the original flavor wants a tweak.

Decend vs Threshold

New 03 Nov 2023 Asked by mythial-blog 22 Comments

Was there a reason why Decend couldn't have been Threshold? It feels like it could've fulfilled the same function as Descend with a similar rules change to what was done with Hideaway.

We want the two different functionalities.

Mechanic Fit in Sets

New 29 Sep 2023 Asked by beeenthusiast 40 Comments

I don't know how long a new mechanic usually needs to sit around before it can be reintroduced, but I will be very sad if Murders at Karlov Manor doesn't feature Hideaway. It seems perfect!

Having the perfect name isn’t always enough as it has to mechanically fit with the rest of the set.

Megamorph Keyword Explained

New 10 Jul 2023 Asked by dr-bubu-rx 43 Comments

Just saw a question about Morph, which reminded me of Megamorph. What is/was the thought process behind making it its own keyword?Would it ever return? Return with a variation (like with Hideaway X or Amass *Zombies* X)?

It was done because of the structure of the Khans of Tarkir block. With 20/20 hindsight, it needed to be a bit more different from normal Morph. My favorite was the variant where you paid 3 for a face down 2/2 with a +1/+1 counter.

Conspire Mechanic Fix

New 21 May 2023 Asked by notmakingablog71 27 Comments

Do you think Conspire could be fixed if it was erratad like hideaway to have a variable number of creatures needed for any given card w/ it?

No. The number of creatures wasn’t the core issue.

Lorwyn Set Trivia

New 16 May 2023 Asked by dubbzious-blog 28 Comments

Hey Mark,I'm a week late on my birthday question, but I would love to hear any trivia tidbits on the set that came out when I first started, Lorwyn!

Lorwyn was Aaron Forsythe’s first large set lead design. He tried for most of the design to get a treasure mechanic in the set. It ended up becoming hideaway.Happy Belated Birthday!

Threshold Mechanic Return

New 21 Apr 2023 Asked by bobbymcbobbo 63 Comments

How likely is it that you bring back Threshold but errata the mechanic to work as Threshold N? Much like you did with Echo and Hideaway.

If we bring it back, I assume we’d do that.

Intricacies of Card Wording

New 19 Jul 2022 Asked by followingthemagic 38 Comments

How often do you have to future proof an ability? Hideaway recently got a shift to add the number you see, but we have sets as recent as Modern Horizons that didn’t add the number. Seems like a difficult task, making wording flexible enough to shift but not so vague that players don’t understand.

It’s tricky. You don’t want extra words/numbers, but you want to let a mechanic adapt if it can.

Impact of Changing Card Attributes

New 15 May 2022 Asked by the-madness-network 28 Comments

There was recently functional errata to the old Hideaway lands: they now put the other cards on the bottom of your library in a *random* order rather than *any* order. It's a small change, but it definitely hurts, for example, Grenzo decks. Isn't that about the same impact as making the Nephilim legendary?

Changing a card to legendary in a non-singleton format is a pretty big change.

Secret Lair for Oracle Changes

New 26 Apr 2022 Asked by anyguy 27 Comments

Whenever you change something impacting other cards (oracle changes), such as the rules of Hideaway, why don't you release a secret lair with the cards affected, in the case of hideaway the few old hideaway cards to be printed with the new oracle text? I'd appreciate the hideaway lands with the new oracle text.

I’m not sure enough people would want it.

Considering Rules for Treasure Tokens

New 24 Apr 2022 Asked by rowanalpha 26 Comments

Would R&D consider just adding to treasure tokens “This enters the battlefield tapped” as an inherent rule? Similarly, what is the stance/threshold for modifying the rules for an existing keyword or game term like was done with Hideaway in New Capenna?

It’s something individual cards can do, but I don’t think it would be a universal rule.

Errata Potential for Hideaway Cards

New 30 Sep 2021 Asked by patjamma 29 Comments

In theory, could the existing cards with Hideaway receive an errata to enter the battlefield tapped so that the Hideaway mechanic itself could receive an errata to not have entering the battlefield tapped baked into the rules of the mechanic?

That’s a lot of work to remove a minor thing from the Hideaway rules. We’d only consider such a thing if Hideaway came back in a big way.

Hideaway's Storm Scale Rating

New 08 Jul 2020 Asked by public-domain-books 19 Comments

Hi Mark! Where does Hideaway sit on the storm scale?

Probably an 8. It’s very clunky textwise and the design space isn’t that deep.

Lorwyn Birthday Trivia

New 22 Sep 2019 Asked by sircreepalot2 36 Comments

Hi Mark! it's my birthday today, I was wondering if I could get some birthday trivia on my plane, Lorwyn!

The Hideaway mechanic started as a much bigger mechanic known as Treasure which showed up at all rarities including common.Happy Birthday!

Hideaway Keyword Decision

New 10 Nov 2018 Asked by obazervazi 31 Comments

Would hideaway still be keyworded if it were printed today?

If was keyworded because the rules text wouldn’t have fit on the card if it wasn’t.

Lorwyn Development Fact

New 15 Oct 2018 Asked by jacopossum 53 Comments

Hi Mark! It is my birthday today; I just wanted to say that Lorwyn as a plane helped me a lot when I was a childhood to get through some families issue. Every morning I read the description of the plane and imagined myself living there. Do you have any fun-fact about Lorwyn development to tell? And where is Lorwyn today on the Rabiah Scale? Thank you!

The Hideaway mechanic (on a rare cycle) was original called Treasure and was a much bigger mechanic that stretched all the way down to common. Lorwyn is a 6 on the Rabiah Scale. Happy Birthday!

Lorwyn Mechanics Review

New 20 Jul 2018 Asked by pureferret 90 Comments

What mechanics would you salvage from Lorwyn for a future set?

The two successes were Evoke and Changeling. The two middle of the road mechanics were Champion and Hideaway. The two failures were the Tribal card type and Clash.

Lorwyn Trivia Request

New 19 Aug 2016 Asked by jacefair109 38 Comments

Hey Maro! My Birthday was the 14th, but I have been on vacation all week and thus haven't been on the internet very much (I just read a bunch of questions from the past week to catch up c:). So can I get some trivia on Lorwyn, my favorite block? Also a trademark 'Maybe :)' on a return to Lorwyn? (My Modern deck is Red-Blue Faeries, in case you're wondering c:)

For a longtime Lorwyn had a Treasure mechanic as a major component, but it ended up getting turn into the rare cycle of Hideaway lands. As for a return to Lorwyn - Maybe. : )Happy Birthday!
