Guttural Response

Color Pie & Counterspells

New 16 Oct 2019 Asked by ezxdz 40 Comments

Do cards like Mana Tithe and Gutteral Response still exist in the color pie slices in which they were printed or are counterspells exclusively a blue thing now?

Mana Tithe is within the color pie, but Guttural Response is not.

Guttural Response Mechanics

Would Guttural Response have been a break if it just said “Target spell can’t be countered this turn”?

No, both red and green can do “can’t be countered”, although red tends to be on spells and green on creatures.

Pie-Infringing Usage

New 16 Jul 2019 Asked by windsweptheath 35 Comments

What's your opinion when a sub-team, like those working on a duel deck, for example, want to use a pie-infringing card (e.g. Guttural Response in Mind vs Might)? I imagine you're not happy, but how heated do the conversations get?

Here’s the line I’ve drawn - If it’s not adding a card to an environment that doesn’t already have it, I don’t worry about it.

Counterspell Mistake

New 16 Jul 2019 Asked by suigenyukiouji 43 Comments

"Red hasn’t been able to do that since the early days." There was Guttural Response in Shadowmoor, and that's somewhat recent.

That card shouldn’t have been printed. It was a mistake.

Counter Spells

Do you think we could get more counter spells like red elemental blast or guttural response: Gruul counter hate?

That’s not something red does any more. It’s not really something it’s done outside of early Magic (with the one exception).
Red can copy spells though and that can be used to counter counterspells that can counter themselves.

Guttural Response Analysis

Hi MaRo this is my first time sending in a question. I was wondering if Guttural response was a break or bend? Is red/green allowed to have counter magic as long as it's conditional?? Thanks :)

It’s a break.

Color Pie Break Query

New 23 Sep 2018 Asked by kerning-pete 29 Comments

Is Guttural Response a color pie break? I'm surprised at how recently it was printed; it was reprinted in 2017.

We reprint color pie breaks in reprint sets if they aren’t adding the card to a format that doesn’t already have it.

A break.

Counterspell Color Identity

New 31 Dec 2016 Asked by dukepaulus 28 Comments

You've recently said that cards like Guttural Response are color pie breaks and shouldn't be allowed. Does that also extend to Lapse of Certainty or Mana Tithe? As someone who LOVES blue counterspells, I think conditional counters have an excellent home in white.

White mostly counters proactively, but it can counter through light taxing or temporarily through delay.

Blue Pie Questions

New 16 Dec 2016 Asked by gabecampos89 27 Comments

Mark my playgroup has recently been arguing over blue color pie. The main question is that you've said this: "Regarding countering, you didn't mention red or green. Are you not interested in cards like Guttural Response anymore? That is off color pie. Colors aren’t supposed to use other colors’ effects against them." But doesen't blue creature destruction do just that? Can you explain why blue gets Reality Shift, Pongify effects? It seems blue can do anything.

Those effects are Blue transforming things from one state to another. That is squarely in Blue philosophically.

Counters Outside Blue

That is off color pie. Colors aren’t supposed to use other colors’ effects against them.

Guttural Response Modification

New 23 Jul 2015 Asked by dukepaulus 21 Comments

Would Guttural Response be better if it just said "Target spell can't be countered"?

That could be a Red/Green hybrid spell as both colors can do it.

Color Pie Adherence

New 23 Jul 2015 Asked by thedualswords 22 Comments

Is Guttural Response okay in terms of the modern color pie? Are non-blue colors allowed to get counterspells as long as they're very specific?

Guttural Response is not okay.

Red Counterspell Misconception

New 29 May 2015 Asked by like-winter-we-are-cruel 15 Comments

But doesn't red have more counterspells than white? Or do thigns like Pyroblast and Guttural Response not count?

Red does not in modern color pie get counterspells.

Instant Creature Interactions

New 22 Feb 2015 Asked by psycojosho 20 Comments

Having Instant as a supertype for Creatures would have some interesting interactions with cards like Guttural Response and Petrified Wood-Kin.

In my alternate world, getting back “instants” could also allow you to get back permanents with flash - depending on whether you say “instant sorcery” or “instant”.

Pie-breaking Countermagic

New 05 Dec 2014 Asked by brningpyre-deactivated20181203 15 Comments

I hope you're having a blast in Italy, even if it's not the season for jorts! I had a question about colour pie, specifically why so many counterspells have been printed in Green and Red. It's more than just a one time thing with Guttural Response, there's also Avoid Fate, Burnout, Pyroblast, and Red Elemental Blast. Is there a reason why they were targetted for so much pie-breaking (I think?) countermagic over the years?

Most of the cards you mention are early cards back before we wrangled the color pie. The few new ones are nods back to the old days that shouldn’t have been done.

Guttural Response Revision

New 29 Nov 2014 Asked by deepwyld 16 Comments

Would it have been better for Guttural Response to do something like, target spell cannot be countered? Both Red and Green get that at times.

Target spell (or possibly the next spell cast) cannot be countered would be fine.

Color Pie Violation Level

New 29 Nov 2014 Asked by kallixti 24 Comments

How bad a color pie violation do you consider Guttural Response?

Pretty bad. Neither red nor green is supposed to be able to counter spells.

Guttural Response Debate

New 08 Aug 2012 Asked by kycygni3 11 Comments

So you think guttural response was a mistake...*sigh*, as if it's a crime to have counterspells in a secondary color. You keep saying "they're in white, counterspells are secondary in white"; Well Mark, typically when one says something is secondary, that means there's more than 0 cards falling under that definition. (Im)patiently waiting...

Lapse of Certainty, Dawn Charm, Rebuff the Wicked. Mana Tithe was in Planar Chaos but I think we could do it in a normal set. There’s not a lot of them, but white does dabble a little (aka greater than 0.)

Guttural Response Opinion

What do you think of "Guttural Response"?

Not a fan. I don’t think the ability is in color pie for either red or green.
