Concerns about Assassin’s Creed Set

New 19 Jun 2024 Asked by realkamina76 6 Comments

Dear Mark,Is everyone in R&D/Play Design doing okay? Because the Assassin's Creed cards are radiating (at least to me, and several of my friends) "severe burnout" vibes. It reminds me of custom sets I used to see floating around on forums, with a hyper-focus on a specific creature type, and a disregard for other formats it might impact.I know you don't like answering overly "negative" posts, but I haven't met anyone, in real life or online, that's actually excited about this set. Everyone's basically waiting for Bloomburrow, and that kind of worries me.

I’ve mostly been getting excitement (the game has a lot of passionate fans), but it’s absolutely fine if this set is something you’d rather pass on. Bloomburrow previews aren’t too far away.I don’t understand what you mean by “severe burnout”. A game called Assassin’s Creed focusing on the creature type Assassin is low hanging fruit, but it’s what matches the video game we’re capturing. Sometimes the correct design choice is the obvious one.

Advice for Managing Busy Life

Hello Mark, It's my 30th birthday today! It's been a rough year struggling with burnout, so for trivia I'd maybe like to ask you for wisdom in managing a demanding and busy life stage. Or perhaps something more light hearted of your choice, up to you :)

One of the things that has helped me as I get older, is to look at decisions more from a big picture perspective. When I’m at the end of my life and looking back, what are the things that will have mattered most?

Potential Burnout

Mark do you ever get Magic burnout? Like, are there ever days when you’re thinking “man, I just don’t wanna see a Magic card today…” ??

Not yet, but I’m only 31 years in (playing Magic). : )

Engaging Burnouts

New 17 Sep 2023 Asked by clownstripedcat 46 Comments

Hey Mark - I'm wondering if you have advice for someone like me. I'd describe myself as an mtg burnout. In short, what do you feel would be the best way for an ex-player to continue to engage with Magic outside of playing? I still think Magic is cool, I don't hate it, I just don't want to play anymore, but that's kind of the whole point of Magic from my current perspective. Any advice on what else I can do?

Take time off. Go play other games. When you feel the urge to play again, check back in. It’s normal for long time players to take a break.

Product Volume Concerns

New 19 Dec 2022 Asked by ghostlygideon 215 Comments

I just read WotC president Cynthia Williams interview with GeekWire and when asked about the overabundance of Magic product she made the same notes about 6 "tentpole" sets answer we've seen from you here, but she also said that within those there have been more SKUs, "Not that we expect someone to buy all the SKUs, but we expect people to buy the SKUs that meet their play style." Is Wizards aware that many Magic players like myself engage with every product to assess if we want to buy it? Every Secret Lair, every "micro-set" (as she called WH40K and Unfinity), everything. The tentpole sets are about purchase volume and I agree have changed little, the increase in OTHER SKUs to assess is fundamentally where the burnout is coming from.

You’re what we refer to as an “omnivore”, that is a player who is interested in every product. Omnivores are a tiny percentage of the playerbase, but are almost exclusively highly invested players, so they have a much higher internet presence. While we do care very much about this group, it’s a much smaller percentage of the playerbase than players in that group assume. Having more options leads to more different players finding the product that they want and increases purchases and play. The side effect is it irritates some of the omnivores who want to keep track of all the options. From a business standpoint, it doesn’t make sense to lower product output simply to make it easier for the omnivore to process what’s available. Doing so would lower sales and play.

Legendary Creature Oversaturation

New 18 Nov 2021 Asked by northernweird 315 Comments

I hate to complain about this, especially when it's actively in conflict with stuff people had complained about before, but I miss the days when there was less Legendary characters in every set, and named characters featured in Magic story wouldn't feature on a card for many sets. I find it impossible to get excited about unique but underpowered Legendary creatures since there be a two dozen more in a month, and some of the magic of seeing a cherished character on a card for the first time is gone.It also feels like the named characters in the story can't afford to just be characters in the story? Their stories feel like they are written to justify the existence of their card and I find it harder to throw myself into them, despite how well some of them are written!Ten stories in five weeks featuring 10+ Legendary creatures is exhausting, and feels like symptom of a bigger burnout caused by oversaturation?

Let’s open this up? How do all of you feel about the current state of legendary creatures?a) not enough legendary creaturesb) the right amount of legendary creaturesc) too many legendary creatures

Burnout Concerns

Your job is quite demanding, sleep about 6 hours a night, dislike (most) vegetables and fruits, got a wife and kids. Aren't you afraid you could get a burn-out. And if you get one, what would that mean for upcoming sets?

Loving what you do helps significantly with burnout. I figure if twenty plus years in I’m not burned out, I’m going to be okay. Thanks for the concern though.

Pie-breaking Countermagic

New 05 Dec 2014 Asked by brningpyre-deactivated20181203 15 Comments

I hope you're having a blast in Italy, even if it's not the season for jorts! I had a question about colour pie, specifically why so many counterspells have been printed in Green and Red. It's more than just a one time thing with Guttural Response, there's also Avoid Fate, Burnout, Pyroblast, and Red Elemental Blast. Is there a reason why they were targetted for so much pie-breaking (I think?) countermagic over the years?

Most of the cards you mention are early cards back before we wrangled the color pie. The few new ones are nods back to the old days that shouldn’t have been done.

Red's Countermagic Position

New 03 Aug 2012 Asked by celestialtyrant 4 Comments

Where do spells such as Burnout, Gutteral Response, Pyroblast, and Red Elemental Blast fall as far as Red's section of the color pie? Is Red allowed to have countermagic as it applies only to blue instants? Like "I'm gonna do what I want and you can't stop me?" Or are those outdated technologies?

I believe those were mistakes and outdated. Richard in Alpha had this theme that colors could do what their enemies did to fight them, but it is hard to define colors when they do things that they normally don’t do.

Concerns of Burnout

You've obviously done so much for the game and your passion for Magic shows. Do you fear burnout and that you will want to walk away anytime soon? (I certainly hope you dont)

This October, I’ll have been at this seventeen years (and a year and a half of freelancing before that). If I was going to burn out, I think it would already have happen.
