Tracking Day/Night cycle in MID

New 01 Nov 2021 Asked by supposedformercardboardjunkie 29 Comments

Playing tabletop draft of MID, I've noticed myself and other players losing track of the day/night cycle when it isn't relevant to anything else on the battlefield. Was there ever a consideration to have the cycle only work while a permanent with Daybound/Nightbound was present. For non-transforming cards like Gavony Dawnguard that still care about the cycle, maybe they could have been Daybound? The rules would stop them transforming just the same.

We did explore that. It required adding a lot of words, and we didn’t feel it was worth it.

Conspiracy Prerelease Luck

New 07 Jun 2014 Asked by chewie-shank-mtg 50 Comments

I just had the conspiracy prerelease and I got really lucky. I first picked a heartless hidetsugu and second picked a fact or fiction so I decided to go blue red. I then opened (and first picked) a dack fayden in the second pack and second picked a lore seeker. I got innistrad, and opened three rares (skirsdag high priest, ludevic's test subject, and a foil gavony township, so I used an agent of acquisitions I got in the first pack to draft the whole pack. Conspiracy is great :)

Sounds like you had a great time (and lots of luck).

Versatile Lands Design

My gripe about the mana system has to do with how the lands generally serve no other purpose besides providing mana (especially if you want colored mana--I'm talking to you Gavony Township and your ilk). Wouldn't making more lands that produce colored mana and also have other abilities give lands more purpose to exist? I think it would cut down on feel-bad moments during late game mana flood. Couldn't you make a variation of the Worldwake "manlands" for every block?

We do some of that at higher rarities. The problem with making too many of the lands have an extra ability, is it seriously ratchets up the board complexity. Right now, I only have to focus on my nonland permanents (mostly). If every land had a secondary function, the amount of combinations you have to start tracking goes way, way up.

Creature Names Debate

New 12 May 2012 Asked by godavarism 3 Comments

Regarding the change from Grizzly Bears to Runeclaw Bear, you said it shouldn't have been plural. But what about Corpse Traders, Gang of Devils, Geist Trappers, Heirs of Stromkirk, Kessig Malcontents, Marrow Bats, Riders of Gavony, Spectral Gateguards, and Zealous Conscripts? All are very recent creatures with plural names. I understand making the name more magical, but are plural creatures really an issue?

It wasn’t Magic shouldn’t have plural names. It was that a 2/2 should only be a Grizzly Bear not Grizzly Bears. Remember, a well trained human is a 1/1.

Utility Lands Query

So, we've missed a red/blue, blue/green, and a red/white utility land in the Gavony Township/Kessig Wolf run cycle of lands. Will we see them in Avacyn Restored?

I don’t know. Will we? :)
