Storm Scale Clarification

New 05 Jan 2023 Asked by giftsstorm 39 Comments

Given that storm has been reprinted multiple times (MH2 with Relay/Aeve and co, Commander products with Flusterstorm, etc.) is it more appropriate to call the Storm scale the Dredge scale, since that’s a mechanic that hasn’t ever really come back?

The Storm Scale measures mechanics returning in premier sets, which Storm has never done since the creation of the scale.

On Storm Mechanic Revival

Do you think storm is broken even on cards like Reaping the Graves and Flusterstorm, or are "storm cards that can't win the game" too narrow a design space to bring the mechanic back?

It’s pretty narrow. We do occasionally make new Storm cards in supplemental products. Unstable had one. : )

Storm Mechanic for Abilities

New 14 Jun 2019 Asked by theactr-blog 33 Comments

So we have the Storm mechanic for spells cast. Is it possible to have a similar mechanic for abilities triggered/activated? At the very least a Flusterstorm like spell/ability for said triggered/activated abilities?

The existence of “0:” activations makes that hard to do.

Commander Product Format

Re: a supplementary Commander product - One of the reasons that people feel that they can't get into Commander as much is because of the price tag, even for the starters, and especially if one of the cards becomes the next Flusterstorm or True-Name Nemesis. What if there were Commander products in boosters to increase availability like Modern Masters?

A fine question. Would you prefer the Commander products as is or in booster form?

White Counterspells Idea

New 06 Mar 2014 Asked by evouga 19 Comments

White is supposedly the secondary color at countermagic but very rarely gets counterspells. Assuming blue's color pie slice size is an ongoing concern, why not move conditional countermagic (Flusterstorm, Mana Leak) to white and leave hard counters in blue?

White is secondary in counter spells like blue is secondary in hand destruction - a distant, distant second.

Storm Scale and Supplements

New 04 Dec 2012 Asked by kallixti 6 Comments

How does the Storm scale apply to supplemental products? Even storm has seen print there (the new Flusterstorm, plus the reprint Hunting Pack), but other high-stormscale mechanics (such as banding and phasing) haven't seen any reprints or new cards in supplemental products. Is there another scale for likeliness to see a mechanic return in supplemental products?

The Storm Scale is about being reprinted in sets that will be in Standard (expert expansions and core sets).  Could I make a scale about ever being reprinted? Maybe, but I’m only one man. There are only so many scales I can handle.

Fixing Storm Mechanic

New 05 Sep 2012 Asked by alex-brault 10 Comments

Do you think Storm would have been such a problem if it had been limited to reactive stuff? Like Wing Shards and Flusterstorm (There are only so many attacking creatures/spells at once, after all)

You’re all falling into the trap R&D keeps falling into. Don’t try to fix storm. Look for other non-dysfunctional mechanics.

Storm Mechanic Critique

You keep talking about how storm is overpowered, and I tend to disagree. The problem is the cards printed - when you develop these cards, you just think "How bad is this if there are 20 copies every time?" and go from there. Wing Shards, Sprouting Vines, make for fine, fun limited cards. Flusterstorm, Hunting Pack, and Temporal Fissure (okay, maybe a version that cant hit lands) are all cards that are fun and not broken in standard. I do not see why storm could not come back with no combo cards.

You do understand that storm is the combo card. Also, if we have to nerf something so much to bring it to print, perhaps that’s a sign we’re not supposed to do it in the first place.

Commander Cards in Standard

Are Commander cards (like Scavenging Ooze and Flusterstorm) eligible for reprint into Standard?

Yes, they are eligible.
