Fat Packs

Fat Pack Naming Origin

New 03 May 2024 Asked by trifas 52 Comments

What originally started as a joke but just kept going?

The name “Fat Pack” that we used for a while was literally pitched as a joke, and then people went, “Wait, why not call it that?”

Why did WotC stop the original fat pack bundle with the novels?

Low sales.

Origin of Day/Night Mechanic

New 03 Sep 2021 Asked by wherehavealltheuswrnamesgone 36 Comments

Hey Mark! I seem to remember the player’s guide from the old Kamigawa fat pack mentioning day/night as a mechanic that was tried in design and was later iterated to the flip creatures. Am I misremembering or was day/night and idea all the way back then?

Day/night was first tried in original Innistrad design as an alternative to transforming double-faced cards.

Key Art Usage

New 15 Apr 2019 Asked by mrtitanic 64 Comments

Some constructive criticism (and a request). I feel like some of the best art in MTG is Key Art. Like Jace on the Shadows Over Innistrad poster, or Gideon in Battle For Zendikar Fat Packs, and recent Ral Zarek in Ravnica. Can we please start seeing Key Art used on cards? It is really frustrating as a Vorthos to see amazing art on everything but the cards.

The requirements of key art are different than the needs of cards art (for example, the dimensions), so the former does not necessarily work in the latter’s role.

Nexus of Fate Rarity

New 11 Aug 2018 Asked by expensivecashew 55 Comments

How can there in total be more Nexus of Fates than Vivien Reids? I understand when only looking at booster boxes sold to LGS's, but what about booster boxes sold after launch, packs at retail stores, fat packs, deckbuilder's toolkits, planeswalker decks, etc?

Of what is printed right now (not necessarily opened or in the public’s hands), there are more Nexus of Fate cards than any particular mythic rare.

Misprinted Guide Support

New 29 Jan 2018 Asked by pagos-volkor-eternalwip 19 Comments

As this is the first time anything like this has happened to me and you are the literal magic man. Should my players guide from a fat pack be mis-paged. (Example, it has two copies of page 9-14/27-32. And is missing pages 15-26) what should I do to get a replacement. As the players guides are my go to lore references when not at a computer and my card glossary? Any help would be greatly appreciated.

Unstable Fat Packs

New 13 Nov 2017 Asked by azraelean 27 Comments

Will there be fat packs of unstable with a land pack like with oath of the gatewatch?

No. Supplemental sets don’t get Bundles. If you want the Unstable basic lands, there’s just one place to get them - inside Unstable boosters.

Unstable Bundle Absence

Will Unstable have fatpacks? The full art land is so beautiful.

There is no Fat Pack, now called a Bundle, for Unstable.

Novels in Fat Packs

New 18 Aug 2017 Asked by akatsukipuppet 34 Comments

Is there any chance we will ever get novels in fat packs again?

As we no longer have Fat Packs or novels, I’d call it a longshot. : )

Old Terminology Usage

New 15 Apr 2017 Asked by theuninvitedghost 31 Comments

"shukkets asked: Do the Amonkhet fat packs have full art basic lands or regular art? 'It has the same proportion as the packs. 20% I think" How about for bundles? ;) Do people still use old terminolgy from time to time at your office? Calling a pre-made deck a Starter Deck, calling creature cards Summons, call generic mana Colorless, etc.?

We use old terminology all the time.

Bundle Content Praise

New 01 Oct 2016 Asked by lordlauri 25 Comments

I'm loving the changes to the new fat packs, or bundles as they are now known. I'll gladly give up the two small boxes and 20 basic lands in exchange for the extra booster and the new box that I can use for my dices. High fives to the one(s) who came up with this change! :)

High fives will be applied.

Narrative Appreciation

New 22 Mar 2016 Asked by yourstarshipisgay-deactivated20 43 Comments

I know some complain about story spoilers in mediums other than the online story, but I just want to say I love what WotC has done with story telling. My least liked way of getting story is by direct reading. I like to be immersed in discovering it through flavor text, art, and mechanics on the cards. The Fat Pack booklets let me see the finer details of things. And I've got to say, SOI is PHENOMENAL. Investigate is ingeniously done, and I feel like I'm exploring Innistrad myself when I see it:)

I’m glad you’re enjoying it.

Fat Packs Error

That was a “cut and paste” error.

Land Sorting in Packs

New 26 Jan 2016 Asked by vercingex 23 Comments

Why aren't basic lands in Fat Packs sorted by type?

Because that’s not how the land sheet is sorted. We don’t want all/most of the lands in a booster box to be the same one.

Comparing Game Styles

New 16 Jan 2016 Asked by biomewalker 15 Comments

So, in Mood Swings everyone draws from the same deck, I seem to remember in the Theros fat pack player's guide that there was a play style where you don't look at any of the cards in the fat pack and just shuffle them up along with all the land and everyone uses that as the deck. Is this a good representation of how Mood Swings plays? or is there something else? the play style is called "Wizard's Tower" if you want to look it up.

Mood Swings has a shared deck but other than being a trading card game is very different than Magic.
