Innistrad Missing Creature Type

New 28 May 2024 Asked by 3-slugcat-pilots-7-ornithopters 42 Comments

Hey MaRo! I recently watched a really interesting video about Innistrad recently. The thesis is that there is a subtle “missing” creature type of UG wizards that were cut for some reason, probably for thematic reasons within Innistrad.I was wondering if you could give any insight if that was the case? Here’s the video, it’s 13 minutes long but it’s very solid and it convinced me soundly as a viewer.https://youtu.be/12X5wgYikqk?si=WW2i_Hr4cZrDHZ_SI also love the idea that the wizards were explorer/pirate wizards in the Hinterland harbor a lot

I haven’t watched the video, but as the guy who led the design, I know that the only five creature types we cared about were the four monster creature types (Spirits, Vampires, Werewolves, and Zombies) and Humans. No other typal themes were ever part of the design.

Bird of Prey Drops

New 16 Nov 2023 Asked by phoenix0012 21 Comments

Hey Mark,
Please give high fives to whoever is making sure we keep getting 1 drop bird of prey in white. Now I just need honor of the pure on Arena and I can make my Falconer deck in Explorer. Keep them coming and my dream of a one drop Soroya with only real life analog falcons in commander can come true

Glad you’re enjoying the 1-drops.

Adjusting Card Preferences

New 16 Aug 2023 Asked by make-ajani-great-again 33 Comments

Just starting off, I love the buffet metaphor and what it stands for. But in real life we can't always go to another table if we need to get away from seafood. The people at my table stopped coming to the buffet. I now eat at a small niche buffet online that doesn't always fill me up and is missing my favorite dishes. (Explorer) We're wondering if you have to make seafood, could it not smell so fishy? We're here to.

When we design a subset of cards we prioritize making it for the people who love it, not the people who hate it.

Aggro Archetype Concerns

New 14 Dec 2022 Asked by galvatron81 36 Comments

Congrats on your Company's plan of actively killing Mono Red Aggro decks in Standard, Pioneer, and Explorer. I didn't realize that Red decks were such a problem in those formats that they needed both Sheoldred and Phyrexian Obiliterator along with all the other Aggro hate cards.

Let’s wait and see the whole set before writing off an entire archetype. : )

Restricted Cards Debate

New 25 Nov 2022 Asked by dwarf-scum 37 Comments

I assume it’s been considered, but why are there no restricted cards in formats like Standard/Pioneer/Modern, or even in digital-only formats like Explorer/Alchemy? It seems like there’s a lot of room between cards that need to be banned entirely and cards that it’s fine to allow four copies of.

Restricted cards greatly up the variance in formats, and we try to lessen variance in tournament viable formats (at least on tournament mattering cards) to allow skill to maximally matter.

Rotating Dungeons in Different Formats

New 11 Jul 2022 Asked by rolscane 32 Comments

I believe the venture asker wanted to know why doesn't Dungeons rotate to keep them appropriately powered in each format. Just have the dungeons themselves be "cards" that can't be put in a deck but are part of the set for legality purposes. That way, let's say Brothers Wars had venture. Only the dungeons from that set would be "venturable" if you were playing Standard. For explorer and most other formats the AFR dungeons would be legal too.

It’s an interesting idea, but I’m not sure the ramifications of such an idea. Many an idea dies to execution difficulties.

We have a Homarid fan that sends things to R&D requesting their return. Happy Birthday!

Annual Innovation Sets

New 02 Mar 2019 Asked by themartiangeek 40 Comments

What was the innovation set for each year? I'm guessing 2019 - Modern Horizons, 2018 - Battlebond, 2017 - Explorers of Ixalan or Archenemy 2, 2016 - Conspiracy 2, 2015 - ???, 2014 - Conspiracy, 2013 - Modern Masters, 2012 - Planechase 2, 2011 - Commander, 2010 - Archenemy, 2009 - Planechase, 2008 - From the Vault, 2007 - Duel Decks, 2006 and earlier - none?

2017 was Unstable. 2015 was Modern a Masters 2015. Some innovation products become product lines so it can be confusing.

Explorers of Ixalan Feedback

New 19 Jan 2018 Asked by chetskolos 30 Comments

I'd didn't get to play in the pre-release, but I did play Explorers of Ixalan with a couple of friends last weekend. The tiles add an additional level of fun to the games. I played once as the vampires and once as pirates. This weekend I will pick up the Rivals of Ixalan Planeswalker decks and add them to the box as alternative decks to play with. As a lapsed player I'm definitely one of the targets with these products and this one is a win for me. High fives to all involved.

High fives to be applied.

Official Pronunciation

New 15 Oct 2017 Asked by nolongerbreathedin 81 Comments

I watched that ‘Exploring Explorers of Ixalan’ video, and I winced when it started with “Explorers of Ihcksalawn”. Seriously, it's not that hard: is pronounced /ʃ/ in Central American languages, so it's closest to ‘eesh-UH-luhn’, but the most important thing is the consonant. Or is there a different official pronunciation?

The official pronunciation was what the video used. We use the same phonetics for all set names. We don’t want players to have to know which culture is the inspiration for a set in order to pronounce the name correctly.

Ixalan UW, GB Themes

New 19 Sep 2017 Asked by zubi492r69 25 Comments

What about UW and GB in Ixalan, no theme? Meaning that we should not try to draft because it is a trap?

They have themes. WU has a flying theme and BG has an explorer theme.

Ixalan Design Approach

New 14 Sep 2017 Asked by spaceyjdjames 37 Comments

I'm not sure if you've answered yet, but is ixalan bottom up? I feel like since kaladesh the line has blurred as the mechanics and flavor work together to create a cohesive feel better than ever (inventor, dissonance and now explorer)

Ixalan was built bottom up. It does have some top-down pieces though.

What is sea explorer world? Is that an undersea world?

Design Roles

New 28 Oct 2011 Asked by eternalcheechako 0 Comments

I just finished "A Kick in the Seat of the Pants" and I was wondering which of Explorer/Artist/Judge/Warrior you consider yourself best at in magic design.

Part of being Head Designers is taking on all four roles. Probably I’m best at being the Artist but I’ve discovered that I have to spend a lot of time being the Warrior.
