Mana Flow Through Omenpaths

New 11 Apr 2024 Asked by nothingbutland-blog 26 Comments

In the past different worlds were said to have more powerful or wild mana, does the opening of the Omenpaths erase this lore? Some planes had weak types of mana do the Omenpaths let stronger mana flow into them? Its just that previously lore onvolved various mana qualities andvwpuld just like to lnow ot that part of the metamagical physics has been changed?

To the best of my knowledge, mana doesn’t flow through omenpaths.

Preserving Light Content

New 28 Mar 2024 Asked by tufhfoeueveufnrjficifjr 36 Comments

Mark I just want to say I have a great deal of love for “holy cow” and “bovine intervention” I think the set is so much better for them. Please don’t become overzealous in cutting out the light stuff.

We’re not. There is a significant sized audience that likes seeing some light stuff in sets. Note that a few light cards does not erase a set having a more serious overall tone.

Silver Border Legality

New 06 Mar 2024 Asked by zanmor 40 Comments

Regarding making a list of silver border cards that are now eternal legal: as much as I want this, I think it's a very bad idea to make such a list and not provide black border printings of such cards. Maybe when the time comes they could go on The List that goes in boosters or something. But it seems to me that the current rule of "a silver border means it is only for casual play" is a good line to hold if there won't be a black border update for cards that's no longer true for.

If such a list exists, we can look for opportunities to provide black border versions, but trying to get them all would be very difficult. It also doesn’t erase the issue of playing with a silver bordered version.

Character Relevance

New 04 May 2023 Asked by reap117 87 Comments

I was unsure about the ending of March of Machines but was fine about it after all. but Aftermath has made it feel really bad now. why just erase these characters from relevance? especially ones you've done nothing with since their inception.

Losing their spark doesn’t mean they won’t be relevant.

It does.

Updated Un-jokes in Oracle

New 08 Jan 2022 Asked by reginakasteen 44 Comments

Speaking of Erase (Not the Urza's Legacy One) from your Drive to Urza's Work, a high five to whoever went back in Oracle and updated the flavor text to cross out the names that have since become cards. Keeping the Un-jokes up to date is one of my favorite Oracle easter eggs.

I believe that was the work of Matt Tabak.

Origins of 'Counterspell'

New 08 Jun 2021 Asked by groundawesome 41 Comments

I know you weren't part of the game at the time but perhaps you have some insight. Why did counterspell always, or at least as far back as Alpha I don't know about playtest versions, "counter" a spell? Negate, Cancel, Stop, Destroy, Remove all seem more accurate words for what it does. A counter in fighting or war or debate doesn't completely erase the initial thing they are countering.

I assume it comes from the term counterspell which Richard wanted to reference.

Perspective on Powerful Companions

New 09 May 2020 Asked by thecurioustale 78 Comments

You asked for input on whether I would erase companions from existence if I could. Definitely not! I think they're a mistake because they're very powerful, and very consistent: Mana permitting, you always get to play your companion exactly when you want to. But it's the kind of mistake Magic needs to make now and then to get a sense of where the boundaries need to be. I 100% support your philosophy of trying new stuff and occasionally failing. I think it's essential to the health of the game.

Thanks for the input.

Companion Mechanic's Future Adjustments

New 08 May 2020 Asked by askkrenko 204 Comments

Never stop innovating! I love Companion as a concept. I think its power level wound up too high (mostly be companion restrictions being looser than they appear) but I think as a mechanic it's a good one. More like Kaheera and Umori and less like Lurrus and Obosh could be good in the future. They just need more playtesting.

This leads to an interesting question - would you erase companions from existence? Yes or no, and please say why.

Draconic Proofreader Peculiar Interaction

New 07 Apr 2020 Asked by yesterminute 37 Comments

Silver-bordered question: How does Stet, Draconic Proofreader interact with permanents that have multiple names? Do you choose which name to erase a letter from, or does it apply to all of its names? Also, if my friend were to legally change their name in the middle of a Magic game after I've activated Stet, would the ability carry over and still have erased the first letter of their new name?

It erases the first letter from the name of your choice. And how slow is your game that your opponent is able to change their name in the middle of it? : )

Handling of Spacegodzilla Card

New 02 Apr 2020 Asked by the-wrong-questions-deactivated 66 Comments

Let me please voice my objection to the handling of Spacegodzilla. By removing the card from reprints but (inevitably) leaving it in the original printing, you are promoting it to a super-rare collectible, which is the exact opposite of the desired effect. Renaming / removing it on the online platforms is a good move, but the physical card should remain (although possibly banned in tournaments to reduce its desirability).

If we could snap our fingers and erase it from existence we would, but we print months ahead of time, so not an option. We’re doing everything we can to limit the card’s existence. Printing more copies is the opposite of that.

Card Preview Technology

New 13 Nov 2012 Asked by lordascapelion 5 Comments

Can you show me all the cards from the "Friends" block if you're able to erase my memories immediately afterward (but still keep the emotional impact)? I dunno, it might be too much excitement.

We haven’t cracked that technology just yet. : )
