Modern Aesthetics Controversy

New 28 Jun 2024 Asked by abzanhouseguest 3 Comments

Hey mark id like to respectfully voice how disappointed I am to see modern looking clothes and tvs for duskmourn

We literally pitched it as “70’s and 80’s horror”. It’s horror with a more modern aesthetic.

Handling Controversial Issues Publicly

New 06 Jun 2024 Asked by perfectcollectorduck 16 Comments

A thought I had the other day: you're very good at being composed and firm when public facing, especially about controversial issues. Would I be correct that you (like most people with jobs) sometimes do so through hidden gritted teeth, because they're fights you're either in the middle of fighting or have lost, and felt very strongly about? My hand high fives you for being able to be a cheerful face of the game while taking the blame for things you personally oppose.

Sometimes I have to argue for things I fought very hard against, but lost.High fived myself.

Darksteel Relic Trivia

New 23 May 2024 Asked by pascal314 15 Comments

Hi Mark! Today is my birthday. If it's not too specific, I was wondering if you had some trivia regarding my favorite Magic card, Darksteel Relic. Thanks!

The design of Darksteel Relic was actually a bit controversial. Shortly after I made indestructible, I designed this card. A lot of R&D was “Why print this? It doesn’t do anything.” I said that players would figure out things to do with it, and finally managed to keep it in the set.Happy Birthday!

UB Cards Controversy

New 25 Mar 2024 Asked by assemblyofretards 58 Comments

on the subject of UB: I agree that everyone can have their own idea of what MTG is, but the issue with UB is nonetheless that it's encroaching. your comparison with un-set cards is not great, because un cards are not legal in Modern (for example) and I don't need to buy them to keep up with the competition, like UB cards.

How about I use horror? There are a number of players that are very turned off by the use of horror in the game, especially involving disturbing imagery. They consider it too far a deviation from Magic’s core high fantasy, and some have a negative visceral response. Many of those cards are legal in Modern.

Unstable vs Unfinity

New 18 Mar 2024 Asked by shahrathestoryteller 86 Comments

Hi Mark, one of the hardest things to do is look at your own passion projects and critique them, knowing you tried your hardest to push them forward despite backlash. That being said, where do you think Unstable succeeded where Unfinity failed?

I don’t think Unfinity failed. It’s the best-selling Un-set by a significant margin. Its response was more polarizing than Unstable though. I did a whole podcast on the lessons learned. Some key things: • Stickers had a logistical challenge that was hard for us to properly playtest and thus adjust to. The logistical issues got in the way of what was a pretty fun mechanic. • Making half the set Eternal-legal was a huge boon to sales, but caused a lot of controversy. • Players really preferred the silver border (which was impossible due to the eternal change, which was done late).• The set had too much going on, making it mentally harder to track than was ideal. I falsely assumed players would focus on an aspect of the set more than they did.

Retro Frame Opinions

New 29 Feb 2024 Asked by mois113 30 Comments

I know that the retro frame BRC decks were controversial. But considering the popularity of commander, could we get, occasionally maybe, a deck or two that also appears in a retro frame version? Even for non-commander players those decks did provide A TON of versions for decks and cubes of old frame fans. I can say, it was the first and only commander product I bought.

The retro frames are polarizing, both beloved and behated. The feedback we got is that players like having the option to have them, but don’t like them as the only option. That means retro frames are more likely to be used as booster fun than the only frame for a whole product.

Battles vs. Epilogue Boosters

New 24 Feb 2024 Asked by marrinara-sauce 38 Comments

So Battles were given two years of space to gauge reception before using them again, but epilogue boosters weren't? A new monetization scheme seems like it would be much more obviously controversial than a new card type.

You can’t do something as a yearly thing and wait two years.

Molefolk Art Style

New 20 Jan 2024 Asked by curiooftheheart 37 Comments

Hey Mark. I know you aren't on story team but as someone who does have more behind the scenes than us I wanted to ask you about the mole person in MKM. It seems kinda controversial in some places I see because it's the first molefolk on Ravnica and he is very cartoony which clashes with the plane. Do you know what's up with it?

I went and looked at the card. I don’t find the art cartoony.

Controversial Design Views

New 02 Jan 2024 Asked by 3-slugcat-pilots-7-ornithopters 37 Comments

Hey Maro! What’s something that you think you are right about related to making magic, that most of your co workers vehemently disagree with? Like what’s your hottest design take among the other designers?

You guys have heard them all here. The one I’m most adamant about, and losing, is the legendary supertype losing its rules baggage.

Mutate vs Companion

New 09 Oct 2023 Asked by mythial-blog 32 Comments

Hi Mark. I was a huge fan of Ikoria as a set and it was interesting reading your lessons learned. It was interesting hearing how Mutate (now being one of my favourite mechanics) and Companion (a rather controversial mechanic) competed for development due to their complexity. Looking back, if you had to pick one, would you have rathered the set design focused solely on Mutate or Companion?

I would have pushed Companion back to another set.

Walking Corpse Controversy

New 08 Sep 2023 Asked by thebansheeoflamordia 61 Comments

Mark now you've got us curious, why did Walking Corpse cause so much controvesy?

For many years black couldn’t get a vanilla 2/2 for 1B. Crossing that line sparked a lot of discussion.

Most Controversial Card

New 08 Sep 2023 Asked by fancifoolery 77 Comments

what's the card that you remember there being the most controversy around when still in development among R&D?

Walking Corpse (vanilla common 1B 2/2) caused more discussion than any other card I remember. : )

Controversial Strategy Cards

New 26 Aug 2023 Asked by vaaste111 29 Comments

Really loved the podcast about inclusion and exclusion, I and a lot of other eternal competitive players still really enjoy (Both playing with and against) things like mass land destruction, Prison strategies etc. I understand that these are pretty taboo. Do you exclude things as polarizing as those even though a portion of the audience loves them. We haven't had competitively viable cards in that space in decades.

We still include cards that do many of those effects, but we don’t do them at a higher power level as they tend to create gameplay states that the vast majority of players don’t enjoy. Card power, as opposed to themes, are more at the mercy of play balance considerations.

Unfinity Controversy

New 15 Aug 2023 Asked by obazervazi 37 Comments

Did people have more of a problem with the mixed legality of Unfinity or the fact that the acorn stamp was used instead of a mix of black- and silver-borders?

Different people had different issues, but my guess is more players were upset about the lack of silver borders.

Updating Magic Article

New 05 Aug 2023 Asked by zombiedinosaurtoken-deactivated 33 Comments

I was reading some old answers from your blog and I found a mentions to the article: "Twenty Things That Were Going To Kill Magic : It’s Magic’s 20th Anniversary Week so I examine 20 of its biggest controversies." do you plan to update it for the 30th anniversary? Also, that article isn't accessible any more, is it possible to update it in the new site?

Is the link broken? If so, I can fix that.

Ikoria Without Companions

New 17 Jul 2023 Asked by nightfiremelody 44 Comments

Companions were a hugely controversial mechanic and have fairly limited design space, with a current Storm Scale of 9. However, given how significant they were, it's difficult to imagine returning to Ikoria without at least nodding to them in some way. How do you feel on that subject, and do you have any thoughts you can share about what a return to Ikoria would look like?

I don’t think Companions are intrinsic to Ikoria.

Encouraging Controversial Cards

New 23 May 2023 Asked by theuninvitedghost 34 Comments

“The one Gate was pretty controversial and we almost didn’t do it, so not exactly the poster child for repetition” what can we as players do to encourage more of this kind of thing?

Give feedback that you like it.

Adding Random Slivers

New 23 May 2023 Asked by godkingjinping 46 Comments

Why can't there be one or two random slivers? You've put gates in sets without mazes end of a pay off for them

We don’t tend to make cards with mechanical creature type themes in sets where there isn’t enough mechanical payoff. Also, one-of Slivers are a bit weird flavorwise. The one Gate was pretty controversial and we almost didn’t do it, so not exactly the poster child for repetition.

Creature Controversy

New 02 May 2023 Asked by foxenquestion 57 Comments

"Green has a downside. It’s reliant on having a big enough creature(s) to deal with any creature threat. " In the modern sets, where creatures are the main focus, it is less and less downside...

I’m glad creature removal, and especially mass creature removal, never gets cast. : )

Legendary Supertype Discussion

New 13 Apr 2023 Asked by beyondtheheadrush 37 Comments

I get that the legendary supertype is a controversial conversation, but aren't its limitations also a good thing? Only being able to have one of the same legendary at once allows for more powerful designs that are problematic in multiples, no?

There are thousands of legendary creatures, and we’ve used the legendary restriction mechanically on just a handful of cards. I would make a mechanic, called something like unique, for that function if we ever changed the legendary rules (which I don’t anticipate us doing).
