Desert Support Skepticism

New 22 Dec 2022 Asked by mtgblk 40 Comments

Hazezon, Shaper of Sands seems fun, but doesn't seem to have much desert support. I noticed Desert was errata'd to the desert subtype, but other Arabian Nights lands like Oasis, City of Brass and other "desert" lands from the set(according on the story) weren't. We've seen recent errata for creature types like Dinosaurs and Phyrexians to expand support. Any chance we can see some errata to some lands to support the relatively obscure Desert mechanic?

I’m skeptical that we’ll do that.

Black Effect Shift

New 13 Mar 2018 Asked by jovianhomarid 48 Comments

What’s this about life loss going away? Was something announced? Does that mean that City of Brass becomes more likely than Mana Confluence going forward?

Life loss isn’t going away. We’re using it less as an effect in black opting to use damage.

City of Brass Clarified

New 31 Dec 2015 Asked by viseling 20 Comments

Will cards like City of Brass now say "Add one generic mana to your mana pool" ?

No. City of Brass can only add colored mana to your mana pool. Changing the symbol for colorless mana hasn’t changed the functionality of any cards.

Mana Symbol Proposal

New 14 Dec 2015 Asked by doopboopdoop 22 Comments

To clarify, can we ever see a symbol for "add one mana of any color" like city of brass

We have yet to make a mana symbol that is produced that is more than one color.

Colorless mana sources

Can cards sigh as City of Brass or Mana Confluence tap for colorless mana?

Not if they say “any color”. Colorless is not a color.

Wizards Office Themes

New 07 Apr 2015 Asked by zanmor 198 Comments

So a lot of the offices/meetings rooms at Wizards are themed and named after the theme. Could you share pics of some of your favorites?

wizardsmagic:
There actually aren’t a ton of names in here named directly after MTG lore. We recently named the new downstairs common area Dominaria (with conference rooms Waterdeep and Ravnica attached). Other favorite rooms include…City of BrassThe Command TowerSerra’s Sanctum (formerly the CEO’s office)Hall of GuildsEasy Bake OvenTHE DANGER ROOMChicken CoopWayne ManorMain EngineeringThe BridgeThe Wampa CaveThe AbyssThe MatrixBermuda Triangle
If you listen to “Drive to Work” I mention a few of these meeting rooms from time to time. She forgot some Magic themed ones:Ivory TowerMishra’s WorkshopEye of UginHelvaultNote the last two are places people were imprisioned.

Ernham Djinn Casting Error

New 03 Mar 2015 Asked by maquis7 27 Comments

In your podcast on Arabian Nights Part 2 you mentioned there was no way to cast Ernham Djinn without a forest. (Giving opponent forestwalk). Mox Emerald begs to differ!

Yes, I’m fallible. : )There was also City of Brass.

City of Brass

New 21 Feb 2015 Asked by arithallan-deactivated20230503 56 Comments

Can you explain why WotC didn't just reprint City of Brass in Journey into Nyx rather than make Man's Confluence?

Two reasons:1) We wanted to update the template to make it a life payment rather than have the card deal damage to you. That’s just how we template cards like it now.2) The flavor was inconsistent with Theros. City of Brass is a reference from “1001 Tales of Arabian Nights”.

Card Design Space

New 07 May 2014 Asked by kpestana 32 Comments

It was pointed out to me that most of the strongest cards in JOU (Limited and Constructed) are mostly functionally the same as old cards (City of Brass, the Dictates, Oblivion Ring, Honor of the Pure, True Believer, Seraph of Dawn, Splinter Twin, Pyrostatic Pillar, Enchantresses Presence, Mesmeric Fiend, Spirit Away, etc) Is this a sign that MTG is running out of design space, or that development is less willing to push unfamiliar effects?

It means that the known cards are the easiest to gauge the power level of. The untraditional powerful card will take longer for players to find.

Mana Confluence vs City

New 12 Apr 2014 Asked by kingrames 28 Comments

I like that Mana confluence is just flat out better than city of brass, not intentionally weaker like tarnished citadel tried to be. Being on the opposite side of the table as an Icy Manipulator (remember how people used to talk about how broken THAT was?) was as frustrating as seeing furnace of rath. Mana confluence protects you from both! And at a much nicer cost...

It’s not strictly better. You can prevent the damage from City of Brass.

Mana Confluence FYI

New 11 Apr 2014 Asked by forcemeat-ghost 27 Comments

To people asking about Mana Confluence: Because City of Brass' ability is phrased as a trigger that deals damage, it creates a trigger every time it's tapped for mana. This trigger causes priority to be passed around between players. On Magic Online, this is actually quite annoying and time consuming.

City of Brass Reprint

Why make a functional reprint of City of Brass aka Mana Confluence?

It’s not quite functionally identical.

City of Brass Update

New 11 Apr 2014 Asked by papagoriot 36 Comments

Why not just reprint city of brass instead of creating another city of brass with a different name?

Because having the land damage you is old, old technology.

Tempest Set Insights

New 29 Mar 2013 Asked by earthtoneoverload-blog 6 Comments

Please say something about Tempest. It is my favorite set but isn't talked about that much.

Go listen to my very first “Drive to Work” podcast. I talk about it for thirty minutes. Okay, here’s a piece of trivia. What was the first card designed in Tempest design to be printed?  The answer is Gemstone Mine (printed in Weatherlight). They needed a card in development so they followed a long R&D tradition, they stole it from a future set which would have more time to find a replacement. The playtest name for the card was Three Shot City of Brass.
