Rule System Stress

New 04 Oct 2023 Asked by j-waffles 42 Comments

One of the playtest cards from Gavin’s unknown event was a card that referenced the MOM legendary team up cards; and he said that the card didn’t really work within the rules. Although that is technically true, I find it hard to believe it could not be easily worked into the rules. Obviously it is clearly understood from the average player POV, but from a rules perspective, why couldn’t there just be a section in the rules that lists all the cards that are legal options? That already exists for Apocalypse Chime, City in a Bottle, and Golgothian Sylex; and I would argue they are far less intuitive or easy to remember when it comes to what cards they apply to. This isn’t me demanding that Gavin’s card be made legal, more so it’s me asking: why can’t cards like that get made? Cards/mechanics that reference a small and intuitive list of cards, with the comprehensive rules having a formal definition for that list?

It comes down to how much stress does it put on the system and is it worth that stress? We believe the answer is no, because it’s a lot of stress for minimal pay off. That’s why acorn/silver-border cards exist. There are things that are practically easy to use, but are onerous on the rules system. Those cards should exist because they’re fun, but we can do so without causing problems with the larger rules structure.

Rare-B-Gone Mechanics

New 27 Sep 2022 Asked by alex-brault 23 Comments

Regarding Rare-B-Gone, City in a Bottle and company only work in black border because the comprehensive rules contain a list of which cards were originally printed in Arabian Nights, Antiquities and Homelands (rules 206.3a-c). Hopefully it's obvious why that wouldn't work for Rare-B-Gone's purposes

And City in a Bottle cares about expansion symbols not rarity, so it’s a different variable.

Intuitive Batching and CR Consultation

New 05 Jul 2022 Asked by bobbymcbobbo 31 Comments

I would say that Apocalypse Chime, City in a Bottle and Golgothian Sylex were the first cards that used the concept of "batching". However, their batch is explicitly defined in the comprehensive rules (CR), and would be a little long to fit in reminder text. Would you ever make another "intuitive" batch where it can be roughly described in reminder text, but you might have to consult the CR in order to know 100% whether something is part of the batch?

Yes, if the batch was generally intuitive enough that players could guess at 99% of it.

Acorn Card Explanation

New 07 Apr 2022 Asked by theuninvitedghost 49 Comments

“ Only acorn cards can mechanically care about an expansion symbol which is what basically needs to happen to have this type of effect.” Are City in a Bottle, Golgothian Sykex, etc acorn cards now?

No. The rules handled it by literally spelling out every card in the relevant set, but it’s not a practical answer on a printed card.

City in a Bottle Philosophy

Can I ask for a return of the City in a Bottle philosophy for MH3?

Only acorn cards can mechanically care about an expansion symbol which is what basically needs to happen to have this type of effect.

Reference to Sets/Planes

New 25 Jul 2021 Asked by pureferret 29 Comments

Could black board reference sets/planes like "Kaladeshian Contractions" though? I thought magic stopped doing City In A Bottle type wordings

That assumed Kaladeshian was a supertype for contraptions.

Border Changes for Effects

New 08 Jul 2021 Asked by tybonel13 33 Comments

Hey Mark! Are City in a Bottle/Golgothian Sylex/Apocalypse Chime effects still black border, or have they moved to silver border like World-Bottling Kit? If they are black border will we ever see this effect again?

Black border can no longer mechanically reference expansion symbols.

Legacy Legal Cards

New 16 Feb 2019 Asked by tbjanowski 39 Comments

City in a bottle, golgothian sylix and Apocalypse Chime are still legal in legacy and vintage, so cards can care about what expansion they are from are just not silver boarder?

The way the cards work in Oracle is they list every single card it affects. It doesn’t look at the expansion symbol. For example, if you have Triskelion from a core set without an Antiquities expansion symbol, it will still die to the Sylix.

City in a Bottle

Do you know the original thought process behind cards like City in a Bottle? And why they abandoned the idea so soon?

Cards like City in a Bottle were made in a time when black border cared about individual cards for qualities (what silver border does now). Because we want all cards with the same name to work the same, black border moved away from working that way.

Watermarks and Rules

New 29 Sep 2018 Asked by completeindie 35 Comments

FYI, the rules can SOMEWHAT care about watermarks, I'd imagine. Looking at the comp. rules, the cards City in a Bottle, Golgothaian Slyex, and Apocalypse Chime all care about expansions they were ORIGINALLY printed in. Could the rules care about cards that were printed with an Izzet watermark, at ANY time in the card's history?

Those cards’ Oracle text can’t fit on the cards. They’re the reason things like expansion symbols and watermarks can’t be referenced in black border.

Expansion Hosing Cards

New 30 Jul 2017 Asked by wordsinarandomorderdotcom-deact 27 Comments

Now that expansion hosing cards like City in a Bottle don't care anymore about the expansion symbol, what are the chances of a similar effect coming back? (even in a supplemental product like Conspiracy)

Black border can’t mechanically care about expansion symbols. Unhinged had two cards (Status Symbol and Home-Bottling Kit) that did.

City in a Bottle

New 21 Mar 2015 Asked by heshotmeagain 30 Comments

Say my opponent is playing a red deck with 20 arabian nights mountains, and I play city in a bottle. What happens?

Currently nothing. Okay, maybe if your opponent is up on the errata, he/she/they laugh. City in a Bottle now names the cards it kills and Mountain is not on that least being the one card that was not new to that set.

What were you guys thinking when you decided to make city in a bottle?

I believe Richard was thinking, “Maybe players won’t like this expansion so just in case…”

Expansion Specific Mechanics

New 28 Jan 2015 Asked by grayer 46 Comments

Since Fate Reforged forever altered the world shown in Khans of Tarkir, wouldn't now be a good time to have a card like "City in a Bottle" or "Apocalypse Chime" to completely wipe out Khans of Tarkir?

As black border can’t care about expansion symbols, it makes such a card almost impossible to make. The errataed version of City in a Bottle won’t fit in the text box of a normal card.

Inspired Mechanics

New 21 Dec 2014 Asked by mossjesus-blog 46 Comments

to the best of your knowledge has a mtg mechanic ever been inspired buy a tvshow/comic/movie

The card City in a Bottle was inspired by a Sandman comic. Actually, I believe the entire Arabian Nights expansion was inspired by that comic.

Arabian Nights Inspiration

New 16 Aug 2014 Asked by tagseeveemaster 38 Comments

The Aarabian Nights expansion was inspired by Sandman chapter "Ramadan". :D

That is the correct answer to today’s trivia question. The card City in a Bottle from the expansion was a nod to the comic that inspired the expansion.

Vintage Masters Selection

New 13 Jun 2014 Asked by anonymousclay 21 Comments

Why is City In A Bottle in Vintage Masters?

I believe they were trying to get cards on Magic Online that see some Vintage play. I believe that card is a sideboard card against decks running Bazaar of Baghdad.

City in a Bottle

New 28 Apr 2014 Asked by alsadius-blog-blog 9 Comments

Wasn't the original rationale behind City in a Bottle that they were afraid people might be offended by the idea of expansions, and felt the need to have a card to remove all the new cards? Just like why they originally considered making different card backs.

It was a safety valve for whatever might upset people about the new set.

City in a Bottle Errata

New 18 Nov 2013 Asked by alsadius-blog-blog 8 Comments

FYI: The Gatherer ruling on City in a Bottle is now outdated by the functional errata. Please pass along to your Gatherer admin. (Also, *that* was your reason for bringing back functional errata? Really? Boo.)

It’s functional errata but only so it works in tournaments like every other card in the game. It’s important that all cards with the same name work the same in black-bordered Magic. Now in silver-bordered Magic, not so much.

City in a Bottle Query

New 06 Nov 2013 Asked by hargismb 7 Comments

Question for the Un-Rules Manager: as of M14, the old card City in a Bottle received functional errata so that it hits every card originally printed in Arabian Nights regardless of the printing of the card in front of you (so City will still answer a ninth edition Kird Ape). Does World-Bottling Kit work the same way?

Nope. World Bottling Kit looks for the expansion symbol. The change in the black bordered rules is because cards can no longer functionally care about expansion symbol. That’s not a problem in silver-bordered land.
