Booster Tutor

Booster Mechanic Colors

New 08 May 2024 Asked by phoebe-thalisse-feather 42 Comments

Hey Mark! As a big fan of Booster Tutor and Summon the Pack (they're fantastic cube cards that I love watching people get to play with) do you think that in a potential future Un set we could get cards in other colors that let you get cards from Magic packs? Or is that a mechanic that's only in color pie for Black Un cards?

We’ve did a booster tutor in red in Unfinity (with Opening Ceremony). All colors can have access if done in an appropriately in-color way.

Mechanic Addition Wish

New 13 Mar 2024 Asked by sirxin 37 Comments

Hello Mark, I'd like to invoke ancient rite of birthday trivia ;) Imagine you could add one mechanic from Acorn to Premiere - no question asked by Play/Set Design. What would you add and why?

Booster tutor. It’s one of my favorite Un effects.

Unfinity Booster Tutor Rules

Mark, how does Unfinity work with Booster Tutor? Do I pull the sticker and land cards out and then draft from the remainder?

You can take any card in the booster.

Urza Card Criteria

For Vorthos naming Urza, does Booster Tutor with it's flavor text mentioning the set Urza's Saga count as an Urza card?

Yes.

Booster Pack Mechanics

Is it possible for Unfinity to have an acorn card involving opening booster packs? Or are you guys trying to avoid these kinds of cards like Booster Tutor or Summon the Pack?

I’m a big fan of Booster Tutor-like cards.

I know we're all on unfinity now, but I have an Unhinged/Unsanctioned question: If I Booster Tutor a pack of Double Masters 2022, add the Cryptic Spires to my hand, then play it, what mana can I add? Is there any point at which I can circle mana symbols on the Cryptic Spires?

You circle the mana when it enters the game.

Booster Tutor Legality

Hi Mark! Could Booster Tutor be eternal legal? It’s sort of a random wish effect.

I think the need for a sealed booster crosses the line into acorn.

Casting Without Booster

What happens if I cast Booster Tutor but don’t have a booster pack available?

Nothing. You fail to find the booster.

Failing to Find Booster

New 14 Aug 2022 Asked by emancipationangel 40 Comments

Re: Hive Mind + Booster Tutor: Can you fail to find a booster? The same way you can fail to find a land from something like a Field of Ruin?

You can fail to find a booster.

Booster Tutor Interaction

New 14 Aug 2022 Asked by coboney 28 Comments

You mention there each player casts Booster Tutor is played while Hive Mind is in play - what happens if the other players don't you know, have a booster? Seems like that could create a bad time with people feeling like they might need to buy one or other stuff there

If someone doesn’t have the ability to get a booster (and no one else can lend them one), they don’t open a booster. In a casual game, you could let someone get the remnants of someone else’s booster.

Hive Mind Mechanics

Un-Rules question. If an opponent controls a Hive Mind and I cast Booster Tutor, what happens?

Each player casts a Booster Tutor. Each player casting it has to provide their own booster pack.

Defining 'Booster Pack'

New 16 Nov 2021 Asked by maskedthespian 43 Comments

Hi Mark. Un-Rules question here. For the purposes of Booster Tutor, Stocking Tiger, and Summon the Pack, which of the following can be used as a "sealed Magic booster pack": a set booster, a collector booster, a theme booster, a themed prerelease booster (e.g. the special booster inside of a Strixhaven prerelease pack for one of the Colleges), a promo pack/foil promo pack, a prerelease promo foil in its wrapper, a box topper, a buy-a-box promo, and a Secret Lair.

The short answer is it has to be a “booster pack”Set booster? Yes, it’s a booster.Collector booster? Yes, it’s a booster.Theme booster? Yes, it’s a booster.Themed prerelease booster? Yes, it’s a booster.Promo pack? No, it’s not a booster.Prerelease promo? No, it’s not a booster.Box topper? No, it’s not a booster.Buy-a-Box promo? No, it’s not a booster.

Booster Tutor Mechanic Evaluation

New 27 Oct 2021 Asked by sirencerwal 25 Comments

Does the "open a pack" mechanic of Booster Tutor or Summon the Pack have a name? And if so where does it sit on the Gotcha scale?

We just call it a “booster tutor”. I’d rate it a 3. Un-sets like doing it.

Difference between cube and limited

New 18 Oct 2021 Asked by old-planet 19 Comments

What makes a card designed for cube? What's the difference with a card designed for limited (draft) in general?

There are some things that Cubes in general like to do that are outside the realms of normal limited effects. Booster Tutor would be a good example.

Feedback on Unsanctioned's Booster Tutor

New 20 Aug 2021 Asked by thestoreman 45 Comments

Hi Mark! This is more feddback than question, but while I love Unsanctioned I still find it weird that Booster Tutor is in it. It kinda breaks the simple "play out of the box" pitch of Unsanctioned and I eventually had to replace the card to make the product work cleaner (and honestly, I can't afford to play it cracking a booster half the games). Something that came up playing with it again today, which shows it has lasting power. Keep up the good work!

Unsanctioned was trying to balance making a box product with reprinting a lot of Un-cards players have been asking for. Booster Tutor is a very popular Cube card, so we wanted to get a reprint of it. I agree it came with a cost for the box game part of the product.

Booster Tutor Rule Query

New 04 Oct 2020 Asked by thasgar 33 Comments

Ok, here goes for an un-mander question: are Booster Tutor and Summon the Pack subject to Rule 11? "Abilities which bring other card(s) you own from outside the game into the game (such as Living Wish; Spawnsire of Ulamog; Karn, the Great Creator) do not function in Commander." Do cards from boosters count as "outside the game?" Because they sure aren't in your sideboard.

You’re already breaking a rule to play silver border cards, so if you’re allowed to have it in your deck, you’re allowed to get the booster.

Booster Tutor Use

When using Booster Tutor is it acceptable to use a Collector/Set Booster?

Any Magic booster is acceptable.

Booster Tutor Typography

New 01 Feb 2020 Asked by mrolp 40 Comments

Uncle Mark, I noticed that the new Booster Tutor has the word "Magic" italicized rather than bolded as it has historically been. Is this a change in style, an oversight, or just an error on the render?

It’s been italicized instead of bolded for at least the last decade, possibly longer.

Booster Tutor Inclusion

New 29 Jan 2020 Asked by jcdmtg 57 Comments

Is there a reason that Booster Tutor is in Unsanctioned? Since Unsanctioned is a stand alone product to mix and match decks to play with friends, it seems odd to me that you would need multiple unopened packs to get the full experience.

It’s a fun card that we thought players would enjoy playing with (and having reprinted).

Cube Popularity Contest

FYI, Booster Tutor is the most popular card in cubes by a large margin.

Possibly. Any other candidates?
