On Flavor Fails

New 10 Mar 2024 Asked by myfavoriteflavorisblue 96 Comments

Regarding "flavor fails" I'd like to share an excerpt from the Alpha rulebook's Q&A segment:
"Q: Can my opponent do something that doesn't make much sense, such as casting both Holy Strength and Unholy Strength on his Air Elemental?"
A: Yes, these effects are magical, after all." "Flavor fails" are canonically "as Garfield intended"! :)

Favorite Card Insights

New 14 Dec 2023 Asked by shadowkinggray 42 Comments

Hello Mark. I redeemed my coveted birthday rite several days ago, but it seems to have gotten caught up in the shuffle. I figured I wouldn't submit it on my birthday, which was the 6th, because a lot was going on then in Magic. My query was for any interesting tidbit about my favorite card in the game, Malefic Scythe from M21, and, provided you had nothing about it, instead the card that got me into the game, Errant Ephemeron from Time Spiral. Thank you very much for your time and consideration.

When we first designed suspend creatures, we started with familiar vanilla and French vanilla ones. Errant Ephemeron was Air Elemental, and one of the first ones we designed. Happy Belated Birthday!

Elemental Colors Contemplation

New 24 Dec 2021 Asked by natew000 32 Comments

If Alpha hadn’t made Earth Elemental and Air Elemental, do you think those elements would still be red and blue today, or some other colors?

Earth makes sense in red, but could be done in green. Air is definitely more blue than any other color. White would probably be second.

Facts on Elementals

New 17 May 2020 Asked by zendikon-sage 47 Comments

Hi MaRo. Today is my birthday! Could I have some trivia on elementals?

Elementals started as truly being creatures made of the four elements (Alpha has an Air Elemental, Earth Elementsl, Fire Elemental and Water Elemental), but over time, we’ve gotten looser and looser with what counts as an element. We now allow Elementals to be made up of just about any substance, some like time aren’t even physical. We also allow Elementals to be of any color, making them one of the tribes that shows up in the most colors.Happy Birthday!

Common Downshift

Could air elemental or Sengir vampire ever be downshifted to common in a masters set?

Unlikely, but anything’s possible.

Animus of Predation

New 23 Aug 2016 Asked by armadillosandthings 29 Comments

Can you ask about Animus of Predation? Almost half of the keywords it can gain don't appear in Conspiracy (or only on a single card), which means unless it gets put into a cube or chaos draft, it's mostly going to be a Green air elemental. It can't even gain trample!

The number one format of Magic is “casual constructed” (aka “put cards I own in a deck”). It’s not a tournament format but it’s how the majority of players play. The card works just fine there.

Air Element Alignment

Is air a Blue element or a Green one? Why do cards such as Air Elemental appear in Blue, while Windstorm appears in Green?

The element of air is Blue.Weather is more Green.

Elemental Reprints Query

New 29 Sep 2012 Asked by hotfurrystuds-deactivated201812 12 Comments

How come Fire Elemental, Air Elemental and Earth Elemental have all been reprinted recently but Water Elemental hasn't since Fourth Edition?

Hmm, so we’ve done earth, wind and fire. I wonder if 70’s music has anything to do with it. : )

Limited Blue Performance

New 18 Jun 2012 Asked by dragonstout83-blog 1 Comments

I don't think it's just about Delver and Snapcaster; in limited, blue still feels like it gets the best creatures, or at very least it gets the two best creature keywords in flying and hexproof. I never get the feeling like blue is the worst creature color when I'm playing sealed, ever; I feel like I want to SPLASH blue for its fliers! Frequently the Air Elemental analogue is the top uncommon creature in the set! Usually black or red feel like the worst creature colors.

For a long time, blue was the absolute worst color at limited. Flying was one of the few things that helped move people into blue. Flying is much more important in limited than constructed as evasion goes up in value as the ability for creature stalemates happen. Hexproof is stronger in constructed because of the raised level of removal.
