Drake vs Dragon Flavor

New 20 Jun 2019 Asked by grey-oppenheimer 68 Comments

What is the difference in flavor between Drakes and Dragons? Is it just for balance reasons? I find it hard to explain to new players why their Windstorm Drake doesn't trigger Lathliss, Dragon Queen.

The animal kingdom has lots of examples of animals that are similar yet not the same animal. Drakes tend to be significantly smaller, on average, than Dragons and they don’t do things like breath fire. In Magic, Drakes tend to be blue and Dragons tend to be red.

Flying Color Themes

Windstorm Drake, Favorable Winds.. it loos like most of the cards that make your flyers more aggressive are in blue. Since White is the color for Anthems, I have always found this odd. Can you tell us why these effects are usually not in white?

Flying is strongest in blue both in number and in cards granting flying. All colors have some ability to boost stats.

Air Element Alignment

Is air a Blue element or a Green one? Why do cards such as Air Elemental appear in Blue, while Windstorm appears in Green?

The element of air is Blue.Weather is more Green.

Sea Creatures in Magic

Re: Blue represents water and air- Green gets a lot of Windstorm and some ice-flavored effects, because the cards they become make more sense in Green's color pie. So why not also big sea creatures?

Green’s the one color that doesn’t need a conditionally attacking 5/5 at common.
