A Good Thing

Blog's Importance

New 09 Dec 2019 Asked by exclusionmage 51 Comments

On the topic of time management: How important is this blog among all the things you do? I think if I were in your shoes, the blog would have been cut for time long ago. I guess it's a good thing I'm not in your shoes.

I consider the blog pretty important. It’s the place I most get to interact most with the players. And since part of my job as Head Designer is knowing what the players want, I consider it crucial.

Character Discussion Flow

New 28 Sep 2019 Asked by gamordanstorm 28 Comments

I didn't realize expressing love for a long-time favourite character I was hoping would come back soon would be so controversial and cause you a flood of more asks. Sorry about that.

Don’t worry. Blogatog is all about topics ebbing and flowing. You created discussion. That’s a good thing.

Squirrels and Gingerbrutes

New 27 Aug 2019 Asked by cursedereaper 116 Comments

Mark one question toward the design team. Why are Squirrels silly but a gingerbread golem isn't (no matter how the actual name is)? Sally deserves a place in Blackboarder/Modern/Standard.

I’ve pointed out the inconsistency. Gingerbrute should be seen as a good thing though as it means the creative team is embracing sone sillier stuff.I’d go nuts in Vintage - 🐿

Supertypes and Subtypes

New 07 Jul 2019 Asked by gonzoron 34 Comments

In your article "Starting Over" you expressed a wish that magic had from the start had flavorful supertypes like Fire and Water. (But it was too late now to add them) Given the recent desert subtype debate here, do you still believe that would be a good thing, or would it be adding confusing extra words?

If we had it to start over, I’d make subtypes a more involved part of the game. That’s not the world we are currently in though.

Red's Emotional Range

New 24 Sep 2018 Asked by murmuringmystic 51 Comments

Hi, Mark! I really enjoy your in depth discussions of color pie philosophy. In the game, I feel Red gets the short end when it comes to representation. One of my favorite Red cards is Cathartic Reunion, because it shows the positive emotions Red can generate. Is there any way to express other aspects you mentioned, like Instinct, Hunger, Affection, or Freedom? Naturally this may bend or break the mechanics, but shouldn't that be a good thing, if it makes red more varied?

The mechanics can handle it. The issue is the context of the game.

Card Draw Mechanics

New 20 Sep 2018 Asked by csdragon 43 Comments

Regarding Dawn of Hope: I like the idea of card draw being enabled for all colors in ways that matter to them. Blue should always be best at card draw, of course, conditional or otherwise, but if rewarding White with cards for doing something White likes to do, like gaining life, brings it up to par with at LEAST Red, if not Green and Black, I think that's a good thing.

The problem is white is the color with all the answers and its weakness is supposed to be it doesn’t always have the answer it needs meaning it’s supposed to be the worst at card drawing.

Game Balance Philosophy

New 15 Jul 2018 Asked by ttip24 57 Comments

Simple question: if something is bah-roken in your game, how is that a good thing? Please don't listen to these people asking for more broken. I don't want Magic to break.

I think what they are asking for is the occasional cards that are environment warping. I don’t think anyone (okay, almost anyone) wants the game to actually break.

Capitalism Critique

New 08 Jul 2018 Asked by studiopyradox-deactivated201812 77 Comments

You keep bringing up capitalism as a black-aligned moral good but I think that's a really bad example. Capitalism is only good for the rich and powerful, and its by no means a meritocracy. Given two people with the same disability that renders them unable to work, the one born rich will have the better quality of life. I can see why black loves it - if it succeeds there's the assumption it deserved to and that others didn't, but that's not a good thing.

There are plenty of positive stories about people who applied themselves and succeeded because the opportunities capitalism provides, opportunities they might never have gotten in other places. Everyone having an opportunity to succeed is a positive black thing.

Poison Counters Concept

New 22 Jun 2018 Asked by galagatriskaidekaphile 27 Comments

Trying to follow the conversation on Suncleanser, and something confused me. Do you mean you tried "poison counters as a good thing" in testing, and it didn't make it to print, or am I missing a card or cards that were problematic once the set was released?

Scars of Mirrodin messed around with cards that gave you a bonus if you had a certain threshold of poison.

Positive Spark Ignitions

New 09 Jun 2018 Asked by suigenyukiouji 74 Comments

Can I request that we get more stories of Planeswalkers igniting their Sparks through positive experiences? Nearly every Planeswalker whose Ignition story we know are of a negative experience; with Samut being one of the small number (if not the only one) that ignited from a good thing rather than bad.

Sparking tends to require stress and that more often comes from negative experiences than positive ones. It’s kind of like why most of the X-men stories of mutations triggering are tied to traumatic events.

Standard Meta Perspective

New 28 May 2018 Asked by starlightofpenguins 28 Comments

Does R&D consider the current state of standard (with pushed gods making Exile or bounce based removal the norm) a good thing? It feels to me like we've come full circle: creatures uniformly die to removal rather than some being more resilient.

I think the pendulum is supposed to swing.

Article Engagement Feedback

New 06 Mar 2018 Asked by inexorableblob 398 Comments

So does being bored to tears by today's article mean it's a good thing not to have applied for the internship?

I truly believe that you frame your own world by the attitude you exude. Being negative to other people just increases the negativity in your own life. I strongly urge you to try just one day of positivity and see how it makes you feel. Search for the good in life rather than always leaning on a cynical outlook. I swear it’s the first step to being happier.

Opinion on Kitchen Sink

New 26 Feb 2018 Asked by paxaqua 72 Comments

What’s your opinion of kitchen sink designs in general? Lazy design or ok once in awhile?

They’re not lazy. I really hate that term. We spend a lot of time on all of our products. Decisions are always made for reasons I think the occasional kitchen sink design is a good thing.

OGPC Scoring Guide

New 09 Jan 2018 Asked by willowthecouncil 28 Comments

Wanted to let you know something - I am in the OGPC (Oregon Game Project Challenge) and in the scoring guide for 2017, one of the marks you can score on is called "Blogatog". Thought it was cool, and that you should know.

I hope it’s a good thing. : ) Thanks for letting me know.

Arena Feedback

New 08 Sep 2017 Asked by mistbornbyheart 23 Comments

MTG Arena feedback: It looks much more dynamic than anything MTG currently has on a digital front, and that is a good thing! My only concern is since I only came in during the actual game being played, I do not know if this will completely replace the current MTGO and if it does, will players somehow be able to acquire the cards that they currently have on MTGO without having to pay for them a second time?

MTG Arena is not a Magic Online replacement. We are starting with the present and moving forward (with the potential of moving back some). Magic Online will still be the place to get (almost) all the cards.

Kaladesh and Contraptions

New 06 Aug 2017 Asked by arkouchie-blog 67 Comments

How did you react when Kaladesh was announced and the very first thing people did was speculate strongly that contraptions would be in it?

There are numerous reasons I think Contraptions are a poor fit for Kaladesh, but one I haven’t talked about is when Kaladesh design started, Unstable already had Contraptions in it and did it in such a cool way that black border isn’t ready for yet that it was never even a real option for Kaladesh. I saw excitement for Contraptions as a good thing as it meant there was demand for them which could only help Unstable.

Liliana's Morality

New 20 Jul 2017 Asked by arandomstringofcharacters 57 Comments

"She did a good thing for selfish reasons. Morally grey." That's not really morally gray though. A mix of moral and immoral acts would be gray, but everything Liliana does is amoral. She's not a mix of selfish and considerate, she's just selfish.

You can be completely selfish and still be morally grey.

Liliana's Moral Complexity

New 20 Jul 2017 Asked by aamcmanus1-blog 76 Comments

I disagree that Liliana saving Innistrad makes her morally grey. She only did that to get the rest of the gatewatch on her side, so that she could use and manipulate them. Why should we root for Liliana?

She did a good thing for selfish reasons. Morally grey.

Support for Less Data

New 12 Jul 2017 Asked by kyuuki-kitsune 63 Comments

With all these people complaining about the "less available data" thing, I'd like to voice my support of the decision. Less people mindlessly checking the data to find the "best deck" is a good thing for diversity, and analyzing the meta and experimenting with decks on one's own is part of what being good at Magic is about. The game loses a lot of what makes it special when it's just about who's the best at piloting the deck that everyone is using in a "solved" format.

Well said.

Hornet Queen Impact

New 03 Jul 2017 Asked by gophilipbowles 53 Comments

Being unable to play dragons seems a small price for the positive impact Hornet Queen had on Standard, whatever offences it may have committed against the colour pie. It enabled monogreen devotion and green-red ramp decks (some with their own dragons) that were otherwise unable to answer cards like Elspeth, and was key to the Sultai Whip archetype. Above all, it did a lot to help keep Abzan in check as the hornets blocked Rhinos and Rocs, preventing the best deck from becoming truly oppressive.

And it allowed green to dominate the air in an environment of large fliers, something green isn’t supposed to do, so no it wasn’t a good thing, it undermined the core construct of the game, something that if done too much will break Magic.
