Creature Powercreep

New 28 Mar 2024 Asked by big-golyat 40 Comments

You mentioned that you think of powercreep in Magic as a matter of newer sets being more powerful than older sets. When I think of powercreep in Magic, I tend to think of individual cards being more powerful than older cards. For example, when Savannah Lions was first printed, it was a rare, since having a vanilla 2/1 for 1 mana value with no downside was considered good (I assume). Nowadays, there are seven 2/1s for 1 mana in standard alone, most of them are uncommons, and they all have abilities that aren't downsides. (That list is: Ascendant Packleader, Cheeky House-Mouse, Cult Conscript, Embereth Veteran, Falkenrath Pit Fighter, Hotshot Mechanic, and Recruitment Officer.) Furthermore, Savannah Lion's recent reprint in Dominaria Remastered puts it at a common, meaning that its relative power over Magic's lifetime has seemingly decreased. Is this idea of powercreep something that comes up during your design process, and if so, how does it get addressed?

The power level of creatures in Alpha was pretty weak. There is not, for example, a single Alpha creature we couldn’t reprint today for power level reasons. In contrast, there are a lot of noncreature cards we couldn’t reprint today for power level reasons. We have made a lot of creature cards. Many of them are below the top tier of what we can print. Making a card better than an existing card is not power creep. Making creatures above the top line of what’s acceptable is.

White's Vanilla Creature Possibility

New 21 Mar 2022 Asked by idunnoguy1 57 Comments

Green gets the best large vanilla creatures and white gets the best small vanilla creatures.
So would a 1 mana 2/2 vanilla be possible for white? Or is savannah lions the max?

Lions in Magic Trivia

New 25 May 2021 Asked by zimgief 53 Comments

Hi! First time asking, long time reader. : ) Today is my brother's birthday, as well as yours (happy birthday!)... as well my nephew's, who was born just a few hours ago! Do you have any trivia on lions in Magic (my nephew' name is Léo) or on fatherhood? : )

The very first lion was Savannah Lions in Alpha. To show how far the creature curve has changed, it was made rare because a one drop 2/1 wasn’t something you were supposed to see often. : )Happy Birthday to everyone!

Cat Trivia

New 15 Feb 2020 Asked by coffeetime88 117 Comments

Hey Mark, could I get some belated birthday trivia on cats?

Sure. Cats was a long-running broadway musical (fourth longest on Broadway) based on a 1939 collection of poems by T.S. Eliot. Its most famous song is “Memory”. It was adapted into a movie with less successful results.Happy Birthday!
Oh wait, we’re you interested in Magic trivia? The first Cat was Savannah Lions in Alpha but it was printed as creature type Lions. The first Cat that was a Cat was Cat Warriors in Legends.

Functional Reprints Clarified

Elite Vanguard is a functional reprint of Savannah Lions. Kytheon, Hero of Akros, isn't a functional reprint of Elite Vanguard.

Correct.

Elite Vanguard vs Savannah Lions

New 30 May 2016 Asked by lenkense 31 Comments

Was there a reason fo choosing Elite Vanguard over Savannah Lions? I thought the lions where a more iconic card from Magic's past.

As the discussion about Llanowar Elves vs. Fyndhorn Elders showed, sometimes players prefer the less reprinted option.

Red vs. White Creatures

New 29 Aug 2015 Asked by lazcarno 20 Comments

Apart from the keywords that one has access to and the other does not (eg haste), how do Red and White differ mechanically in their approach to small, aggressive creatures? For example, for all that Red is supposed to be the colour with the highest overall power/toughness ratio, there has never been a Red Savannah Lions; why is that?

White’s creatures at one and two drop generally are more powerful than Red’s.

Creature Design Philosophy

New 27 Aug 2015 Asked by phyrexianperspective 70 Comments

How would you respond to the claim that having creatures like Brimaz, King of Oreskos, Avatar of the Resolute, Chief of the Edge, etc. with power and toughness equal to or greater than their mana cost and all upsides dumbs down the game? I'd personally rather see creatures of this size to mana cost ratio with creative drawbacks that make you think and build around them like Erithizon or Rotting Giant.

I would respond that I fundamentally disagree. The game isn’t a deeper game without Savannah Lions.

Imagining Reserve List

Could you imagine an alternate universe where Savannah Lions were on the reserve list?

I can. I’m very imaginative.

White's Color Pie

New 05 May 2014 Asked by drkobolds 18 Comments

Why is Elite Vanguard/ Savannah Lions in white's color pie rather than red or black or green? White has the widest array of defensive options of any color and a mentality that favors defense and striking back rather than attacking first. It is the army color, but I'm not sure why that would justify white getting the 1 CMC 2/1 over another color. It seems inconsistent to me, but I'd like to hear your thoughts on it.

White is the color that gets the best weenies as it is the army color that makes up a strong force out of a lot of little dudes.

Savannah Lions Reprint

New 10 Nov 2013 Asked by calintares 10 Comments

Can you ask the team making M15 if they can reprint Savannah Lions at uncommon in order to help out Common/Uncommon cubes?

We do not choose rarity to help out particular formats. We choose what is correct for the set in question.

Cats in Magic Colors

New 13 Sep 2013 Asked by mostlyconnect 12 Comments

Flavour-wise, why are cats generally white? I get the Alpha lineage from savannah lions, but as the owner of several moggies, I don't see much that suggests duty, loyalty, faith...

Wild cats, as a species, tend to look after the group more than most.

Rare Vanilla Creatures

New 06 Apr 2013 Asked by moncalamaro 11 Comments

just a matter of time before you figure out how to do vanilla creatures at rare. but you did figure this out sir, in alpha. Savannah Lions.

We’ve done vanillas at rare in the past. The question was about the future. We’ll do fine there as well.

Creature Draft Impacts

New 13 Nov 2012 Asked by mrtickles22 3 Comments

If 2/1s for W or G now have advantages and good creature types at uncommon, can a 2/1 for W like savannah lions be acceptable at common? Could Isamaru be reprinted at uncommon if it didn't already have a rare printing?

2/1 for one mana have some draft issues so odds are we will continue to do it at uncommon.

Cats in White Color

New 16 Aug 2012 Asked by orbitalplatypus 8 Comments

Why is "cat" so often a white creature type? Cats are anything but orderly! Historical precendence in Savannah Lions? Is this cognitive dissonance why cats (or specifically Leonin) can't be white's iconic small race?

We can’t just give every animal to green because all animals are wild. We’ve worked very hard to carve out space in each color for different animals. I think cats have fallen to white because they have a social structure where the pack works together and cares for one another. We’ve played up this aspect to make cats more white.

Powerful Vanilla Creatures

is there some sort of phobia of making vanilla creatures powerful?

We’ve had tournament level vanilla creatures. Savannah Lions being the first one that pops into mind.

Rare Vanilla Creatures

New 23 Nov 2011 Asked by thatdamnaussie 5 Comments

What does it take for a vanilla creature to be printed at Rare?

It’s happen numerous times. Alpha had Savannah Lions (2/1). Morningtide had Indomitable Ancients (2/10). Feel free to post any others you come up with.
