Black Removal Power

New 16 Oct 2023 Asked by fancifoolery 45 Comments

In recent years (especially now with the printing of Cyber Conversion) I've been thinking black has really been falling behind in its creature removal powers. I keep finding myself rather running things like Resculpt or Reality Shift than Doomblade, Go for the Throat, Infernal Grasp and other black removal. Do you think black needs to to experience a similar power creep in removal or do you think it should stay about at this level?

Are black decks splashing other colors for creature removal?

Out-of-Pie Effect and Reprints

New 29 Apr 2022 Asked by j-waffles 45 Comments

“Out of pie” just means it’s something that the color isn’t supposed to do anymore, so more effects like that probably won’t be made. But how much does this affect reprints? For example, Reality shift and Pongify are no longer in pie for blue, does this mean they are less likely to be reprinted? Or just less likely to be brought into formats that don’t already have them (I.e. standard)

Our policy is we don’t reprint breaks that introduce them to tabletop formats that don’t have them.

Reality Shift's Color Identity

Could Reality Shift be done in monowhite?

I think so. It’s no longer blue.

Blue vs White Capabilities

New 03 Aug 2019 Asked by phyrexiathings 75 Comments

“Creatures are important so blue is allowed to answer them”. That’s fine, but as a color (in commander), blue now has reality shift, pongify, hybridization, and nownpower vacuum, where as white has only swords and path (anything that costs more is too inefficient). Blue is better at killing singular commanders than white now, I think that is the issue...

“If you ignore every white way to deal with commanders except the two I’ve named, white has less ways to deal with commanders than blue.” In debate, this is called a “false premise”. : )

Blue's Command Zone Impact

New 03 Aug 2019 Asked by helloblawstudent 37 Comments

Hey mark sorry about the feels fine in blue guy. I think some of the most recent hate for the new card stems from the purpose of the command zone in commander in that the commander is usually a key piece to a deck. Blue already had the most potent disruption in the form of counter spell. With this new card, Rapid hybridization, reality shift and pognify it feels like blue ability to deal with creatures on the battlefield and off is a lot stronger than it should be.

Creatures are a major part of the game. Blue is allowed to have some ways to deal with them.

Blue's Creature Removal

New 11 Feb 2019 Asked by phyrexianoracle 47 Comments

Pongify, Rapid Hybridization, Reality Shift are not big concerns in EDH games. The environment has tons of removal and even “free” steal effects like Treachery. This likely only impacts budget edh decks. That said I believe you’ve talked before about how Blue shouldn’t be destroying any creature even if it replaces it with another. It should be exiled so that same creature doesn’t come back as the flavor is that the creature was turned into the new one, not destroyed and player compensated.

Ideally it would be “exiled”, but there are times where other demands require it be “destroy” instead.

Blue's Gameplay Impact

New 09 Feb 2019 Asked by nerdyhologrampizza 66 Comments

Re: blue polymorph. It feels like a double standard with respect to other colors. If you’re going to define the boundaries of blue’s pie so flexibly that Reality Shift (practically StP, let’s be honest) is ok, then why doesn’t white get the same treatment? The slightest crack in the “no draw” rule risks destroying the game, but while blue “can’t deal with permanents”, it can replace that Eldrazi Titan with a 2/2, no sweat. One feels rigid, the other permissive. Do you see why we’re aggravated?

In turn, you need to recognize that this is a Commander-centric problem. In a Standard game where you start with 20 life, blue’s slower, reactive nature offsets this issue. Turning something into a 3/3 isn’t fully getting rid of the problem. (I do agree I’m not a fan of blue transforming things into 2/2 and smaller, except if it’s an aura or temporary effect on a sorcery).

Permanent Removal Mechanics

New 09 Feb 2019 Asked by le-flesh 61 Comments

Afterlife is a removal spell. Giving the opponent something as part of its resolution doesn't change the fact that the target is GONE (see Swords to Plowshares/Path to Exile/Beast Within/Chaos Warp/Assasin's Trophy). Polymorph/Pongify/Reality Shift et al are breaks for Blue. They are permanent removal in the color supposedly designated the worst at doing so and your willfull support for them makes this game we all love worse.

Blue is allowed to remove a creature if it replaces it with another creature. That’s not a break. Blue is allowed to do that. If you like, you can think of the rule as “Blue can’t remove creatures unless it then replaces them with another creature”.

Color Pie Exceptions

New 09 Sep 2017 Asked by notsofriendlyelemeandor 26 Comments

What's the flavor reason or justification behind cards that break the color pie a little? What is the design philosophy behind cards such as Beast Within or Reality Shift and would it be possible to see effects like these printed on future cards?

Beast Within is out of color pie. Reality Shift is not. Blue can transform creatures.

Pongify Discussion

New 03 Jun 2017 Asked by jacethebeltsculptor 30 Comments

Mark, if I may- if Pongify was a mistake, why were two similar removal spells (Rapid Hybridization and Reality Shift) printed afterwards? Is this just a pattern of b×ttles you lost?

I’m not anti-Pongify. It’s in Blue’s color pie. Turning a creature into a 3/3 is not flavorwise killing it.

Blue Pie Questions

New 16 Dec 2016 Asked by gabecampos89 27 Comments

Mark my playgroup has recently been arguing over blue color pie. The main question is that you've said this: "Regarding countering, you didn't mention red or green. Are you not interested in cards like Guttural Response anymore? That is off color pie. Colors aren’t supposed to use other colors’ effects against them." But doesen't blue creature destruction do just that? Can you explain why blue gets Reality Shift, Pongify effects? It seems blue can do anything.

Those effects are Blue transforming things from one state to another. That is squarely in Blue philosophically.

UG Creature Removal

New 13 Dec 2016 Asked by holdingou-blog 35 Comments

Hi Mark! Would it be possible to introduce a UG creature removal that actually results in a 1-for 1? No bounce. Destroy or exile with a negative effect attached to it, that doesn't give a creature back. I really like the Idea of giving your opponent the creature's cmc in mana back next turn. Like a negative Plasm Capture as payment. Reality Shift and Rapid Hybridization are just not fit to deal with cheap creatures.

The problem is neither Blue nor Green can destroy creatures. The closest you get is Blue destroying as a technical means to then replace it with another creature.

Blue's Removal Limitations

New 21 Jul 2015 Asked by firebraider 30 Comments

Could one say that Blue's major weakness is that they are fairly poor at permanently dealing with threats already on the board? Even pongify effects are weaker than they seem because they leave a threat behind [reality shift / curse of the swine never saw much tournament play].

One could say that.

Blue's Creature Removal

New 10 Apr 2015 Asked by unknownwarrior33 24 Comments

Maybe it's just me, but don't cards that say "exile target creature" (like Reality Shift) go against Blue's weakness of creature removal?

No, cards like Reality Shift aren’t destroying a creature, they’re transforming it into a different creature.

Opinions on Polymorph Cards

New 11 Jan 2015 Asked by colorsofphilosophy 38 Comments

When people complain about blue's polymorphing cards, do you take that into account at all? I know you think cards like Reality Shift are okay, but I would think that you'd care about the backlash against them.

Don’t mistake a vocal minority on social media for being the majority opinion.

Player Complaint Patterns

New 11 Jan 2015 Asked by godavarism 61 Comments

It's kind of funny how people are complaining about Reality Shift exiling when just two years ago people were complaining about Rapid Hybridization not exiling.

The through line is people enjoy complaining. : )

Exile Mechanic Defense

New 10 Jan 2015 Asked by reiversmusings 37 Comments

I'm fairly certain part of the Reality Shift problem is that exile is perceived as a significantly more powerful form of removal than destruction, enchanting, etc and blue the "color that's bad at removing things in play" having exile sets people off

Exile is not the domain of a single color. It is a tool used to have things not return. Sometimes this is flavor based like Red disintegrating things and sometimes function as how to make sure flashback can only be used once. White is the color that most often uses the resource but it is not a White thing. In this case, Blue is permanently transforming something. We don’t want that thing reanimated or tutored for because it is forever transformed. That means we use exile as a means to make sure the original thing is forever gone.

Reality Shift Concerns

New 10 Jan 2015 Asked by doctor-roman 43 Comments

I think what's upsetting people about Reality Shift is that exile with compensation has always been a white thing (Swords and Path come to mind), and that blue getting exile removal (despite the flavor), is a sign that blue is coming back to being "the best color". I myself am in the camp that polymorph would make more sense as an enchantment ala Darksteel Mutation, but that's just me. However, I won't pretend that I know the inner workings of R&D and will trust your judgement on the matter.

Here’s the real problem. The issue at hand isn’t a design one or a color pie one. Blue’s had this effect and done it continually since 1996. The issue at hand is the power level of the effect and that is a development issue. As Head Designer and Keeper of the Color Pie, I have a huge impact on the first two and very little impact on the latter. There’s not a lot of point arguing with me about a development issue so you argue in the areas I do have lots of control. The problem is in those areas, you don’t have winning argument. In the development argument, I feel you have a much stronger case, but arguing with me about it doesn’t do much. I agree with you that I wish development pushed less in this area. Note that the manifest card really isn’t a great example of this as the downside is potentially pretty big.

Blue's Exile Mechanic

New 10 Jan 2015 Asked by feksda 43 Comments

Nobody is concerned about the "flavor" of reality shift. They're concerned about how blue exile gets around creatures with graveyard recursion/effects. Blue isn't supposed to have such strong answers to a creature spell after it has already been resolved.

Creature stealing allows Blue to solve problems similarly (and allows your opponent to hit you with your own creature) yet I’m not getting people telling me stealing shouldn’t be Blue.

Reality Shift Debate

New 10 Jan 2015 Asked by mr-snufflegums 33 Comments

So a friend and i had an argument the other day about Reality Shift (and rapid hybridization/Pongify) being a color pie violation. are they? Is blue allowed to remove a creature from the battlefield and leave something behind like a 2/2?

Yes, blue is allowed to do this and has a long history of doing it. Note that the 2/2 has the potential to turn into another possibly more dangerous creature.
