Hybrid Mana Rules

New 03 May 2024 Asked by trainmastergt 80 Comments

Hi Mark,
If you could snap your fingers and have whatever Magic rules you wanted changed, would you change the color identity rules to make cards with only hybrid mana symbols playable in any deck that could cast them (for example— Kitchen Finks would be playable in any Green or White deck, Jinnie Fay could go in any Green deck, while Boros Guildmage could still only go into decks containing both Boros colors). I feel like the Commander RC’s current rules surrounding hybrid mana confuse a lot of people into thinking the mechanic is a lot less flexible than it actually is.

I would love for hybrid mana to work as intended in all formats.

Birthday Trivia on Small Races

New 14 Oct 2020 Asked by lariatstoboy 44 Comments

Hello Mark! Today is my birthday and I was wondering if I can ask for some bday trivia? Specifically, can I get some trivia on kithkin, ouphes, or any other small race in mtg?

Kitchen Finks, one of the most famous Ouphes started as Heather’s Chipmunk. Sean Fletcher, one of Shadowmoor’s designers, was asked by his wife if he would make a chipmunk card for her, which he did. That chipmunk would eventually become an Ouphe.Happy Birthday!

Hybrid Cards Complexity

Are there any hybrid cards where the monocolored equivalents (eg a monogreen Kitchen Finks) would never be printed for color pie reasons?

Hybrid cards are difficult to design and we’ve erred a bit in the past with cards we wouldn’t normally do in a monocolor.

Card Placement Humor

Re: toilet cards, the very first LGS I went to had Kitchen Finks above their sink, and Porcelain Legionnaire above their toilet, so now I get an equivalent chuckle when I see those cards as if it were the real thing.

Do the kitchen finks steal stuff from the free table?

Probably.

Creature Trivia

So for some birthday trivia how about some trivia on Kitchen Finks or Mulldrifter please, and thank you for the great work you do

Kitchen Finks was Heather’s Squirrel in design and was named after a squirrel that frequented the designer’s lawn. The designer was named Sean Fletcher and Heather is his wife. Happy Birthday!

Commander Color Preferences

New 17 Jan 2015 Asked by kaokun 32 Comments

For what it's worth if the Commander rules treated hybrid mana "correctly" I still wouldn't be able to bring myself to run a Kitchen Finks in a Jund or Mardu colored deck. It just doesn't feel right to me. I feel less strongly about Finks in a mono-white or mono-green deck though.

For what it’s worth I see a red commander wanting to only play cards that are red instead of wanting to not play cards that are white, blue, black or green.

More Kitchen Cards?

New 25 Sep 2014 Asked by mafiaiguana 71 Comments

Can we get more kitchen oriented cards? Sure there are a lot of butchers and now we have hot soup but my Ironroot Chef Commander deck is still missing a lot of utensils and creatures to man the kitchen and brew up awesome plays :)

We had the Kitchen Finks. : )

Kitchen Finks Fondness

New 12 Apr 2014 Asked by jtfr96 13 Comments

We know your stance on kitchen sink cards, but how do you feel about Kitchen Fink cards?

I’m a fan of Kitchen Finks. The card was designed by Sean Fletcher, one of only two people since design moved in-house to be on a design team but not be a Wizards employee. Sean got my attention through creative (very creative) letter writing.

Appreciation for Non-Actions

Since you get hate for things you don't do let me thank you for something you didn't do to even it out. Thank you for putting foil Vendilian Clique, gifts ungiven, path to exile, and kitchen finks all in the same modern masters pack for me.

You’re welcome. : )

Counters Mechanics

New 24 Apr 2012 Asked by ddi-pixelvenser-deactivated2012 3 Comments

Many many players, including me with the infamous Kitchen Finks, loves -1/-1 mechanics. Do you feel like it could be explored more often?

It’s something we plan to do every once in a while, but +1/+1 counters are our default.

Persist Mechanic Popularity

New 16 Oct 2011 Asked by rhprocter-blog 5 Comments

I thought that persist was an awesome mechanic, and many of the better persist creatures (Kitchen Finks, Murderous Redcap, Woodfall Primus, etc.) are still finding homes in decks. How did persist test as a mechanic in your market research? I'm wondering if we'll see this cool thing again~

Persist both tested and played very well. I would be surprised if it never showed up again in Magic.
