Devoid Mechanic Design

Could Devoid have been done more like Firespout, where you only got the color-centric abilities if you spent the relevant colored mana to cast it?

That’s not the utility we wanted.

Card Design Insights

Well, it's finally my birthday again. Could I get some trivia about one of my favorite cards, Assemble the Legion? Barring that, perhaps something about the Firespout mega cycle from Shadowmoor and Eventide? Thank you, for this and everything else you do for the community!

I designed Assemble the Legion because I wanted to create an Army that got stronger over time. It was also a finisher card for Boros (red/white) which often runs out of steam late game.Happy Birthday!

Hybrid Card Design

It occurs to me that Hybrid has more design space if you treat it as "soft gold" like with the original Ravnica Guildmages and the "if color X was spent to cast ~, do Y" spells from Shadowmoor and Eventide like Firespout. This way the card has two halves so to speak and the only way you get the full card is to use both colors while still allowing the card to be played in monocolor.

Hybrid at its core is “or” not “and”. A handful of cards like that are okay but too many and hybrid just becomes gold cards.
