Generous Gift Discussion

New 25 May 2019 Asked by gophilipbowles 81 Comments

At least to me, Generous Gift feels less natural than Beast Within. Targeted land destruction may not be a break in white in the sense that it doesn't undercut a core white weakness, but green killing creatures directly has more precedent even if it's considered a break in the modern colour pie; nor is gifting creatures very white. The flavour, fun as it is, of white getting land destruction because an elephant squashes it flat seems a case of stretching flavour to justify an off-colour ability.

Green was never supposed to be able to kill creatures in the color pie. I had a drag out fight over Dessert Twister in Fifth Edition twenty plus years ago (which I lost because there wasn’t a good replacement, but they claimed wasn’t a precedent). And white giving people things in exchange for destroying something has been in White’s color pie since the beginning. So yes, Generous Gift is and has always been more in color pie than it’s green version .

Chronicles Counting

New 15 Apr 2019 Asked by perfectlydarien 49 Comments

I would suggest that counting Chronicles separately from Fourth Edition makes no more sense than does counting Alpha and Beta as separate sets. It was packaged in different packs, but was considered to be an extension of Fourth Edition, and was legal everywhere (and everywhen) Fourth Edition was; it didn't occupy an "expansion" slot in Type 2, and it rotated along with Fourth Edition when Fifth Edition came out. It should probably not count.

I agree that counting Chronicles seems odd. Thoughts?

Extra Large Set Feasibility

New 12 Jan 2019 Asked by darthfox050378-blog 41 Comments

Is it possible to make an extra large set, double in size, to have all 10 guilds in one set?

We experimented with a four hundred plus set in Fifth Edition. It was just too large.

Special Chandra Card Insight

New 20 Sep 2017 Asked by zanmor 44 Comments

Doug came back to give us a tantalizing look at a special Chandra card. It is 1/3 on the collector number. Could you or someone else share pics of the other two with us? Any word on what special project(s) earned people these cards?

There was an award assigned for each of our three big games: Magic, Dungeons & Dragons and Duelmasters. Magic was for the Planeswalker packs. Dungeons & Dragons was for the launch of Fifth Edition. I’m not sure what Duelmasters’ award was for. I’ll see if I can get permission to show you the cards.

Rare-Be-Gone Dynamics

New 12 Sep 2017 Asked by gnomepolean 53 Comments

Two quick questions: does rare business gone work on mythics, cards that lost their rare status in iconic master? And if not can I get a maybe on mythic begone?

Rare-Be-Gone destroys all rares and mythic rares. As with all silver bordered cards, qualities of cards are defined by the attributes of that particular card. For instance, Wyluli Wolf has been printed both at common (Arabian Nights) and at rare (Fifth Edition). If both were on the battlefield and you cast Rate-Be-Gone, the rare Fifth Edition version would be destroyed while the common Arabian Nights version wouldn’t be destroyed.

Desert Twister Debate

New 21 Jul 2017 Asked by element-ary-deactivated20220315 49 Comments

Hey MaRo, do you consider Desert Twister to be a color break or just a bend? My playgroup has been arguing about it all week, and I'd like to hear your thoughts. Thank you for taking time to answer this ask and all the others!

It’s a crystal clear color pie break. One of the biggest fights I ever had in R&D was trying to keep it out of Fifth Edition. I lost obviously, but only because there were no other good choices to replace it with, and I got every member of R&D to swear it would never be used as a precedent for future cards.

Standard Size History

New 13 Jun 2017 Asked by defenderofsoma 61 Comments

Is it correct that once HOU becomes standard legal, it will be the most cards legal in standard since, something like, 1996? There will be 8 legal sets, ~1740 cards (not counting planewalker deck cards and counting DFCs once.) The eventual new 2.0 standard will be about the same size (6 big and a core set, 249 cards each = 1743 cards) when Standard is at its biggest. New standard is now bigger, no?

That’s not even close to the largest number of cards in Standard. Large sets used to be bigger and core sets sometimes bigger than that (Fifth Edition had 449 cards in it). I think the largest, of relatively recent time, is original Ravnica block and Time Spiral blocks were in Standard together. Cold Snap was included along with the core set and a whole slew of time shifted cards.

Largest Standard Format

New 04 May 2017 Asked by calintares 44 Comments

When Hour of Devastation hits, will this be the biggest standard format ever?

Nope. Time Spiral Block + Lorwyn Block +Coldsnap was the largest I think. If not something with Fifth Edition in it.

Balance Card Mystery

New 27 Dec 2016 Asked by superfantasticpiratecollection 40 Comments

Hey Mark. It was my birthday on the 26th and I was wondering if I could get some trivia on my favourite card of all time, Balance.

One of the great Magic mysteries was how Balance got into Fourth Edition. (Note this was before I got into R&D.) R&D knew the card was a problem, it was restricted! My guess is it was a pet favorite of one of the designers and he talked the others into including it. It’s how Necropotence ended up in Fifth Edition. Happy Belated Birthday!

Honoring Sue Ann Harkey

New 03 Dec 2016 Asked by ct4cd 59 Comments

I don't have a question this time, but I feel compelled to use this space to shout out for Sue Ann Harkey, art director from Alliances through Mirage block and Fifth Edition, and the best the game has ever had. She had a brief tenure and is largely forgotten, but defined the look of Magic when I started playing and produced the best era the game has ever had, visually. I had the pleasure of talking to her recently and she deserves a glowing page in Magic history.

Sue Ann was awesome. She’s responsible for Maro’s artwork being what it is. She saw the painting (entitled “Green Man”) at an art show and bought the rights to the image. The painting now hangs in my den.

Largest Set Possibility

What are the chances of you guys printing a set with more cards than 5th edition?

Low. Fifth Edition had 429 cards. And that’s not even counting the basic lands!

Teaching Magic Generations

New 08 Aug 2015 Asked by haaaaaaaaave-you-met-ted 9 Comments

I've been playing since just after fifth edition came out. I convinced my parents to get me the 5th Edition starter deck and just loved how awesome all the art looked. I didn't really get the rules for a couple years, but then once I got the hang of it, I haven't played much else since. I can't imagine not playing, but now I'm getting to teach my step-son magic, so I'm almost guaranteed to get to play for a long time to come.

Build Your Own Standard

New 17 May 2015 Asked by pie-official 49 Comments

What is Build Your Own Standard?

It was a format I made for a Magic Invitational. You could choose any two blocks and any core set from Fifth Edition forward. Any card banned in Legacy or Block Constructed is banned.

Card Organization Thanks

New 16 Dec 2014 Asked by chorocojo-b-deactivated20221107 42 Comments

I've spent the past week sorting piles of cards into binders. Please thank you all for the following:-Using expansion symbols core sets after Fifth Edition. -Putting collector numbers on cards in Exodus. -Making the numbers easily readable in M15.

You’re welcome. A lot of people don’t realize how much simple functionality of card reading and tracking has happened over the years.

Set Size Limitations

New 17 Sep 2014 Asked by mymtgdreamz 21 Comments

I see most sets have in the range of 250-300 cards. Has there ever been an even larger set than that? And why don't we see like really large sets, like 400 cards?

Fifth Edition had over 500 cards. The reason you don’t see sets that large is we don’t have the resources to make sets that big, not with the number of cards we already generate each year. It also would be a waste as there comes a point where sets are so big that prevent the consistency we want for limited play. They also become very hard for players to acquire all the cards.

Desert Twister Disapproval

New 26 Sep 2013 Asked by normandean 16 Comments

So if Beast Within is a problem, what about Desert Twister? Or does that fall entirely outside the bounds of what would be printed in green these days?

I fought very, very hard to keep Desert Twister out of Fifth Edition. I obviously lost. I dislike it as much as Hornet Sting.

Necropotence Reprint Query

New 02 Feb 2013 Asked by thetasteoffire 4 Comments

Hi Mark! I'm a long-time player (since Mirage, when I was eight), a long-time follower of this blog and its associated content, and someone who's taken it upon themselves to read most of your "Making Magic" archive - so I decided it was time to finally thank you for all that you've done, not only as a designer, but as someone who's often the face (and since your podcast, the voice) of Magic. Keep up the good work! (And reprint Necropotence, if you'd be so kind-Reserved List or not.)

Necropotence isn’t on the Reserved List. It was already reprinted once in Fifth Edition. That said, I’m not sure it’s coming back in an expert expansion or core set any time soon.

Massive Set Possibility

New 21 Jan 2013 Asked by our-particles-are-in-motion-dea 4 Comments

Do you think we would ever see a massive set, like double the size of a large one?

Fifth Edition was almost that large. As we have limits for how many cards we want in Standard, it would be very hard to do.

Giant Set Consideration

New 27 Aug 2012 Asked by vistoron 3 Comments

Have you guys ever thought about doing a giant set? Something with, say, 500 cards in it?

When I read your first question, I thought “What about Lorwyn?” To answer your second question, we almost did it one once - Fifth Edition had 449 cards in it.
