Elite Vanguard is a functional reprint of Savannah Lions. Kytheon, Hero of Akros, isn't a functional reprint of Elite Vanguard.

Correct.

Elite Vanguard vs Savannah Lions

New 30 May 2016 Asked by lenkense 31 Comments

Was there a reason fo choosing Elite Vanguard over Savannah Lions? I thought the lions where a more iconic card from Magic's past.

As the discussion about Llanowar Elves vs. Fyndhorn Elders showed, sometimes players prefer the less reprinted option.

White's Versatility

New 14 Jan 2015 Asked by corrfell 71 Comments

Taking the heat off of Blue: Why can White do virtually anything without any drawbacks? It has a monopoly on small, effective creatures (Soldier of the Pantheon, Elite Vanguard, etc) and impressive large creatures (Baneslayer Angel, Reveillark, etc) a hold over coveted keywords (First Strike, Vigilance, Flying, Indestructible, etc) powerful removal (Path of Exile, Journey to Nowhere, Oblivion Ring, etc) and it has control spells like Silence. Black at least pays a price for versatility.

It’s the reason white is fifth in card drawing. It has answers but no way to easily draw more.

Green's Power Level

I know you've tried it out, so I'm just going to go ahead and ask. With Memnite (1/1 for 0) printed and Elite Vanguard at uncommon (2/1 for W) Do you feel the 2/2 for G is too powerful for the current Standard environment or are you saving it for something special?

Green doesn’t get a 2/2 for G straight up. White I believe can get it with a slight limitation (like say being a legendary creature).

Creature Stats

Which colors can get 2/1's for 1 colored mana (like Elite Vanguard or Tormented Hero)?

White is primary and green is secondary for 2/1 creatures for C.

Creature Drawback Perception

Is the "jackal pup" drawback not viewed very badly at wotc? My new players often ask why white gets 'normal' guys like elite vanguard but red's all have drawbacks that keep them away from the color.

White gets better weenie creatures than red. That’s why white gets 2/1 vanilla for one mana and red doesn’t.

White's Color Pie

New 05 May 2014 Asked by drkobolds 18 Comments

Why is Elite Vanguard/ Savannah Lions in white's color pie rather than red or black or green? White has the widest array of defensive options of any color and a mentality that favors defense and striking back rather than attacking first. It is the army color, but I'm not sure why that would justify white getting the 1 CMC 2/1 over another color. It seems inconsistent to me, but I'd like to hear your thoughts on it.

White is the color that gets the best weenies as it is the army color that makes up a strong force out of a lot of little dudes.
