Mana Value Higher Than Draco

New 30 May 2024 Asked by bardeen1 19 Comments

If/When: A legal card with higher mana value than Draco

If. We make cards like Erratic Explosion that deal damage to players equal to a card’s mana value, so we want to be careful how expensive we make it.

Now we have Angelic Destiny and Draconic Destiny. Can I request for blue, black, and green Destiny? :)

Maybe. : )

Design Playfulness

Hi Mark, I need you to lie to me and tell me that at some point in design, draconic destiny gave +5/+5, and cost 6 mana.

Um, sure. : )

Draconian Gate-Bot Type

New 08 Oct 2022 Asked by jjkp420 19 Comments

Draconian Gate-Bot. Why is it a creature type Robot and not Robot Gate? Is it to avoid the acorn stamp? I now want to request Gate as a creature type.

Draconian Gate-Bot guards the gate. It is not the gate. Also, Gate is a land subtype, and while it’s both artifact and creature, Gate-Bot is not a land.

Language Interaction with Stet

New 30 Jun 2022 Asked by idunnoguy1 31 Comments

How does Stet, Draconic Proofreader work with cards that aren't in English/don't use the Latin alphabet? Would you have to reference the English card names of whatever is on the battlefield?

Technically, it doesn’t work with them. You can house rule it to the English version if you want.

Understanding Stet's Unique Design

New 04 Nov 2021 Asked by selein 201 Comments

I really like the design of Stet, Draconic Proofreader lately. His design is quite different than a lot of other silver bordered cards. Could I ask a little about the thought process designing him and what is going on in his art?

When I was figuring out what we wanted the new cards to do in Unsanctioned, it dawned on me that we’d never had an Un-Dragon, so I allocated one of the red slots to be that. My note to the designers was I wanted the Dragon to have a job not associated with Dragons. I believe Ari Nieh was the one who made the first version of this card. She made it a proofreader because she liked the idea of having it remove text off of cards. The art, by the way, shows Stet (an editing term) turning “mice” into “ice” by cutting off the “m”.

Question about Silver-bordered Cards

New 14 Apr 2020 Asked by yesterminute 28 Comments

Silver-bordered question: I don't know my opponent's middle name, but control a Stet, Draconic Proofreader and have a lot of white mana. I activate Stet's ability targeting my opponent enough times to have safely deleted all the letters of their name. Can I activate Monkier Mage's second ability by paying a blue and saying nothing (which is now their middle name), or am I now unable to pay the cost of saying their name?

They have to have a name for you to pay the cost by saying it. Moniker Mage’s abilities don’t work if you or your opponent, respectively, don’t have a middle name.

Draconic Proofreader Peculiar Interaction

New 07 Apr 2020 Asked by yesterminute 37 Comments

Silver-bordered question: How does Stet, Draconic Proofreader interact with permanents that have multiple names? Do you choose which name to erase a letter from, or does it apply to all of its names? Also, if my friend were to legally change their name in the middle of a Magic game after I've activated Stet, would the ability carry over and still have erased the first letter of their new name?

It erases the first letter from the name of your choice. And how slow is your game that your opponent is able to change their name in the middle of it? : )

Circumventing True-Name Nemesis

New 31 Jan 2020 Asked by fish-based-pun 33 Comments

If my openent has a true name nemisis out can I use Stet, Draconic Proofreader on my own name so I can remove the true name nemisis?

True-Name Nenesus requires you to choose a player. It doesn’t necessarily require you to name them. You could point at them , for example, so Stet won’t help you.

Name Validity

New 29 Jan 2020 Asked by withwherewithal 49 Comments

Un-rules question regarding Stet, Draconic Proofreader. My name is William Jake Allen Forbes, I have always gone by Jake, but as William is my legal first name it is what comes up when dealing with bureaucrats and any official paperwork. For determining if I am a valid target for the damage would Stet, being a bureaucrat, look at William or Jake? P.S. Unsanctioned looks amazing by the way, look forward to playing with it.

It goes by what your known as, not your official name.

Legend Rule Logic

New 10 Jan 2014 Asked by luxurytampons 14 Comments

It seems to me that the legend rule would make far more sense flavor wise if name applied to everything before the comma (E.g. Niv-Mizzet, Dracogenius, and Niv-Mizzet, the Firemind would be treated as the same creature) So why doesn't it work like this?

Because title names are searchable ruleswise as they can vary so greatly  from language to language.

Flavor vs Gameplay

New 23 May 2013 Asked by rwaggro 22 Comments

Having Niv-Mizzet, the Firemind and Niv-Mizzet, Dracogenius at the same time wasn't "nice". Now there can be 4 in the battlefield. Can I ask how this was an improvement?

We took slight flavor hit to get a substantial gameplay gain.  This is very similar to what I call the “elephant in the boots” issue. If we wanted to be very flavorful, boots wouldn’t go on animals. The equipment would say something like “Equip humanoid”. I mean an elephant can’t get boots of speed on. But we decided that the gameplay was better if any creature could use any equipment.  Yes, at times it makes flavor that doesn’t make sense, but the gameplay was so much superior that we decided to suck up a slight flavor hit. Same thing here.

Niv-Mizzet Variations

New 03 Sep 2012 Asked by marotintedglasses 2 Comments

What are your thoughts on Niv-Mizzet, Dracogenius? Do you think he is too close to the original Niv, or does such a small change show realistic growth and change in a character?

I think he’s a fun twist. The cards might look similar but they play very differently and they require you to build very different decks.

Niv-Mizzet Rule Clarification

New 03 Sep 2012 Asked by onelastperfectverse-deactivated 10 Comments

Can both Niv-Mizzet, the Firemind be out at the same time as Niv-Mizzet, Dracogenius? Or would Mirror Gallery be required for such vanity?

Multiple legendary creatures that represent the same person can be out together as long as they are not the exact same card. Flavor fail, I agree, but it’s how the rules work. There’s no way for the game to know that Both Niv-Mizzets are the same creature storywise.
