Chaos Orb

Magic in Pop Culture

New 02 Aug 2023 Asked by dude1818 22 Comments

Another Magic in pop culture, again on the Lateral podcast: on a question about other collectibles, the host brings up the story of a player who tore up a Chaos Orb to sprinkle it across the table as an example of collectibles that encourage their own destruction

Thanks for letting me know.

Are Shahrazad, Falling Star, and Chaos Orb honorary acorn cards?

Yes.

I don't know how they did it, but props to the Arena team for finally getting Chaos Orb to work in digital!

Wait until you see the Shahrazad.

Acornization of Banned Cards

New 09 Dec 2021 Asked by brocolirobb 25 Comments

In the same way that silver-bordered cards from the past can be de-acorned (though there are no current plans to do so), is it possible that cards like Chaos Orb, Falling Star, or Shahrazad could be removed from the ban list and acornized? (I'm not talking likelihood, just theoretical possibility.) Still unplayable in Vintage, Legecy, etc., but a format like Commander+Acorn would then have access to them. Thanks.

Being there’s no Chaos Orb printed with an acorn and we can’t print one because of the Reserved List, it seems an odd move. Also, as with Chaos Orb, there are some play design issues.

Silver to Black Border Cards

New 08 Dec 2021 Asked by trupie 48 Comments

People often ask about silver border designs migrating to black border. Are there any cards you feel the opposite way about? Cards that were designed in black border that you feel or felt would've been better served in silver border?

Absolutely. Chaos Orb should have always been an acorn card as an example.

Compatibility of Chaos Orb Rules

New 01 Dec 2021 Asked by gurrgleing 25 Comments

Can the rules technically handle Chaos Orb?

Not really. That’s why dexterity cards have been silver border/acorn for years.

Chaos Orb DFC Version Possibility

could we see a DFC version of Chaos Orb?

How does it being a DFC help solve its issues?

Interaction of Mutate Mechanic

New 14 Jul 2021 Asked by goldencrustacean 18 Comments

Okay, rules question: If you play Chaos Orb, turn it into a creature, mutate onto it, and then activate it to flip it onto the battlefield, do you just flip Chaos Orb, or all of the creatures mutated onto it as well?

Just the Chaos Orb.

Dexterity Cards Information

New 10 Jul 2021 Asked by lhurgyof-blog 47 Comments

I'll give a try at my birthday trivia again: got anything about dexterity cards, such as chaos orb?

Before Chaos Orb was banned, for a small time it had errata in tournaments where you had to name a card and, if you hit it, you destroyed it. Happy Birthday!

About Reprinting Chaos Orb

New 12 Jul 2020 Asked by mystic1-blog2 26 Comments

If you ever see this Mark. Will Wizards of the coast ever reprint chaos orb as a silver boarder card? (I think it would be cool if Wizards ever did)

Chaos Orb is on the Reserved List, so we can’t. Plus we can’t print the same card in black and silver border. We do though have cards in silver border you can throw.

Significance of Uncards

New 09 Jul 2020 Asked by turn3nissa 168 Comments

Uncards like B.O.B. or urza tend to not stick in the mind. Theyre illegal in everything and used only in draft and casual play. As much as theyre cool I wouldn't consider them an actual card for things that have been done

Let’s get one thing clear here. Silver-bordered cards are real Magic cards. They have a Magic back and can be played in actual games of Magic. Perhaps they aren’t played in the format you play, but then Chaos Orb isn’t either and I’m sure you consider that a real Magic card.Magic is a game for many different kinds of players, so we make many different kinds of cards, Just because something isn’t for you doesn’t mean it isn’t for somebody. Please respect that.

Chaos Orb in Unset

New 03 May 2020 Asked by bunsenburn 26 Comments

Is there any possibility of Chaos Orb being printed in an Unset?

The exact card is on the Reserved List, but we’ve made physical dexterity cards like Slaying Mantis in Un-sets.

BFM Card Reality

New 09 Nov 2018 Asked by theonetrueqriist 63 Comments

The BFM halves aren't the largest creature cards because they aren't real Magic cards. :-/

They’re real Magic cards. Flip them over and look at the back. : ) What they aren’t is tournament-legal. Neither is Chaos Orb, and I’m pretty sure you’d call that a “real Magic card”.

Chaos Orb Metric Edition

if Chaos Orb was ever reprinted, would non-English versions of the card convert the height to metric?

Probably.

Pop Culture Items

New 18 Apr 2018 Asked by squidthethicc 77 Comments

Magic is pop culture: there are several MTG based items (Black Lotus, booster pack, starter deck) and usable cards (giant growth, ancestral recall, chaos orb) in the binding of Isaac (not sure if anyone has told you, I'm probably NY the first, but i still thi k its super cool)

I’ve actually met Edmund McMillen and he is a big Magic fan.

Oversized Card Ruling

New 03 Dec 2017 Asked by isgayforgirlswithtails-deactiva 28 Comments

Pretty sure I know the answer, but figured I’d ask anyway: Can spike grab oversized magic cards, such as the oversized griselbrand from the helvault promotion?

Technically, no. This ruling came up years ago with Chaos Orb shenanigans.

Slaying Mantis Mechanic

New 15 Nov 2017 Asked by sundayswiththeilluminati 35 Comments

Unstable design question! "Just a second" on Slaying Mantis is a great riff on "Split second," but I'm curious: did you also add that ability to avoid a repeat of ruling on whether a player can move their permanents around in response to Chaos Orb/Chaos Confetti?

Yes, just a second was designed to avoid the “in response, I move my stuff” answer to a physically thrown card.

Dexterity Cards

New 14 May 2017 Asked by zanmor 23 Comments

The one thing that jumps out to me as something Magic used to do (once I can recall with Chaos Orb) that it doesn't is dexterity cards, but I think that's pretty established in silver border land.

It is.

Ante Night Memories

New 18 Feb 2017 Asked by gatheringmagicalanswers 47 Comments

Hey, Mark. Did you ever personally lose cards to ante? What were some of your most unfortunate losses/biggest wins with ante?

The only ante matches I played was at a store I frequented which had a monthly ante night. I made a mono black deck with commons, uncommons and all the broken black ante cards all of which were easy to acquire. There wssn’t much to lose. I did win a Chaos Orb though.

Un Sets Flexibility

It can and has.
