Card Borders

Possibility of More Chickens

New 29 Jun 2024 Asked by wingedhotdog 3 Comments

I'm always happy to see more Bird cards (Bloomburrow has me excited)Is there also a chance we will see more chickens without silver borders in the future?

It’s always a possibility. They would be creature type Bird.

Constraints in Changing Borders

New 22 Jun 2024 Asked by aalgot 4 Comments

Why not just make a special “Greatest show in the multiverse” border. I mean artifact isn’t a color so there’s technically precedent for that.

Changing the border causes printing issues. It’s why we didn’t mix silver borders with black ones.

Universes Beyond Frame Criticisms

New 20 Jun 2024 Asked by pantswithoutlegholes 77 Comments

howdy mark, i'm not a big fan of universes beyond but more than anything i strongly dislike the ub card frame. i've played magic for a long time and my reaction to the the ub frame is honestly pretty similar to white borders. i regularly see people sharing this same opinion. has there been any research on how players feel about the ub frame? is there any chance it will change or has that ship sailed? white borders famously weren't considered a huge success as a signifier.

Nothing is unchangeable. How do others feel about the Universes Beyond card frames?

It has been discussed.

Un-set Border Choices

New 10 Apr 2024 Asked by light-wolf 39 Comments

Hey Mark! You've said that the acorn stamps in Unfinity weren't well received. If another Un-set happens and you wanted it to have eternal legal cards again, would the return of silver borders be considered a priority, or are the logistical problems of having mixed borders so much that you'd consider just keeping the acorn stamps to determine legality?

We can mix silver and black border with enough planning. The decision for Unfinity was just made too late for it to be an option.

UB Border Perception

New 23 Mar 2024 Asked by boymeetsanime 82 Comments

Hi Mark! At first I was firmly in the non-UB camp, but as time has passed and, rather selfishly, as cards from IPs I like have started to come out/be announced, I have changed my stance and actually quite enjoy them.
My only gripe that persists is the UB card border. With other sets, alternate borders are a collecting choice, and personally I prefer the uniformity of my cards all having regular borders, but with UB cards that choice is taken away from me. Despite liking UB, every time I see one in my hand or while shuffling through cards, the metallic-looking border instinctively makes me think "that's not a "real" magic card, it's a Universes Beyond card".
Do you think there's a chance that changing the UB border to that of regular Magic cards would help bridge the gap of acceptance in people's minds?

I’m curious what you all think.

Goblin Bookie Rules Issues

New 07 Mar 2024 Asked by ashnodsfoodstamp 31 Comments

RE silver borders which should be legal: goblin bookie is a great card for coin flipping decks thats balanced and no rules issues. Could really use a reprint too.

I wouldn’t say that card has no rules issues.

Borderless Cards Logistical Issue

New 26 Feb 2024 Asked by pantshkek 21 Comments

Why don’t borderless treatments run into the same problems that having two or more borders in a set do?

The problem wasn’t that we can’t print black border and silver border on the same sheet. The issue was we couldn’t do them with the number of cards planned for the sheet. That meant we’d have to cut cards and we didn’t want to. Borderless cards can be printed with the proper number on the sheet so it can be done.

Mixing Borders Printing Challenge

New 25 Feb 2024 Asked by aalgot 50 Comments

What causes you to need to do gutter cutting to mix black and silver border rather than just being able to print it like that?

There’s a little bit of variance in sheet cutting. If all the borders are the same color, it’s hard to notice, but if you mix borders it makes it very obvious.Come to Blogatog for the design insight. Stay for an inside look at how printing works. : )

Black Silver Border Dilemma

New 25 Feb 2024 Asked by aalgot 22 Comments

What prevents you from having black and silver border cards on the same sheet thus forcing you to change to acorn despite signifying the same thing.

If you want to have different borders on the same sheet, you have to do what is known as “gutter cutting”. That requires you to have less total cards on the sheet. The only way to do that in Unfinity (based on when the decision was made) would have been to cut cards from the set. We don’t get a lot of Un-sets, so I wasn’t willing to do that.

Disguise Card Borders

New 01 Feb 2024 Asked by heavenlyevan 29 Comments

Was there any thought to creating a unique border aspect for disguise card? Something that visually communicates that a card has disguise? Like the miracle border or the legendary crown.

Not that I’m aware of. Special borders are usually reserved for cards that need to stand out on the battlefield and disguise is not relevant at that point.

Silver Outline Suggestion

New 05 Dec 2023 Asked by nabistay 42 Comments

I know the mixing of silver border and black Border in the printing process is a logistical nightmare, but what about a thicker silver 'outline' around acorn cards and keeping the border black?

The two can be mixed with enough planning. It was hard to retrofit.

Silver Border Acorn

New 20 Nov 2023 Asked by delicateturtleangel 31 Comments

"That’s basically silver borders/acorn which is what Conspiracies should have been."Isn't a big distinction between silver border/acorn and regular black border, their interaction with the rules? You can throw in a pack of Conspiracy in any draft (Chaos or regular) and all rulings involving the draft-matter cards will 100% comply with the rules of the game. A lot of them can even be played in eternal format. Since you didn't draft them, some of their effects don't do a thing, but they still work. (It wasn't drafted, so no cards were revealed this way for instance).

Conspiracies had to be banned from constructed formats. There’s no reason to do that when we have technology that does it without having to gum up a banned list.

Limited Watermark Use

New 20 Nov 2023 Asked by delicateturtleangel 29 Comments

About watermark matter in black-border:What about a supplemental set with cards that care about watermarks, but only in limited games of that set?Kinda like Conspiracy, but it doesn't need to have cards that matter while drafting (not that it couldn't)

That’s basically silver borders/acorn which is what Conspiracies should have been.

Unfinity and Bablovia

New 15 Nov 2023 Asked by redplaysblue 20 Comments

The setting is still in the Un-iverse.

Contraptions' Future

New 22 Oct 2023 Asked by arcanistlupus 20 Comments

I've always wondered about Contraptions - you stated at the time that they weren't given borders with the intent that they would be black-border legal even though there were no black border assemble effects. But at the time dice rolling wasn't black board, and there are a number of contraptions that roll dice. Were you anticipating dice-rolling becoming black border back in Unstable?

I thought it was potentially possible.
