Red Birthing Pod Concept

New 26 Jan 2023 Asked by ff7hero-blog 23 Comments

Could Red Birthing Pod get a random Planeswalker (Atla Palani/polymorph style)?

With deck building, random isn’t all that random.

Red Birthing Pod Concept

New 25 Jan 2023 Asked by j-waffles 33 Comments

We’ve now gotten birthing pod variants in white and blue, in addition to the original in green. May I request, if ever a “red birthing pod” is made, it search for planeswalkers?

Searching for planeswalkers is white, not red.

Vivien's Birthing Pod Mechanic

New 05 May 2022 Asked by petruscaex 51 Comments

If WotC is moving towards less tutoring and more "look at the top X and do Y", why Vivien ended up with a Birthing Pod on the +2 instead of getting something similar to Elspeth Resplendent's ability?

Think of shuffling as a resource to be used sparingly. A planeswalker might be a good pace to spend this resource.

Prime Speaker Vannifar

New 26 Jan 2019 Asked by jul0798-blog 51 Comments

I just wanted to say thank you to all responsible for printing Prime Speaker Vannifar, as I think it's a very elegant way to breath some life into the old Birthing Pod style lists without making the effect overly problematic. It's one of my favorite cards printed recently. Is it possible we could see a similar fix for Splinter Twin?

That’s a little trickier to replicate on a creature.

Vannifar vs Birthing Pod

New 08 Jan 2019 Asked by flamestunt-blog 65 Comments

How is Vannifar safe for modern if birthing pod isn’t?

It’s on a creature. More people have creature removal in their main deck than artifact removal:

Unbanning Policy Explained

New 20 Aug 2018 Asked by ahabthelandwhaler 67 Comments

If the future of card design shouldn't be held hostage by the past can WotC unban Birthing Pod and Stoneforge Mystic then?

You do understand banning troublesome cards from the past is helping the future not be hostage to the past.

Green's Tutoring Dominance

New 18 May 2017 Asked by discoviolenza 66 Comments

Is there a conscious effort in R&D to make green the best tutor color? Every competitive tutor printed recently is in green Traverse the Ulvenwald, Birthing Pod, Collected Company, Green Suns Zenith, Chord of Calling just curious as an old timey magic player I think of black as the tutor color.

Green is the best creature tutoring color.

Birthing Pod Trivia

New 03 Mar 2017 Asked by reallymystictaco 33 Comments

Birthday question time! Do you have any trivia about my favorite Magic card of all time, Birthing Pod? Or about my favorite creature, Kiki-Jiki? Thanks!!

I designed Kiki Jiki because I enamored with the idea of Red getting temporary cloning. Happy Birthday!

Birthing Pod Trivia

New 24 Dec 2015 Asked by huandamonia 49 Comments

Tomorrow (Christmas Eve) is my birthday. Birthing Pod fell out of favor when it was banned in January. No one cared for it anymore. Because of this, I was actually able to get my hands on one, which I couldn't before. I didn't know what to expect, so I threw it into my Commander deck. One day of using it, it became my new favorite artifact in the entire game. Can I get some trivia on Birthing Pod?

Birthing Pod was designed by a man named Joe Huber. Joe worked in Wizards R&D but only was on a few Magic design teams. Joe has since moved in to work elsewhere. Birthing Pod is his most famous design and his Magic legacy. Happy Birthday!

Birthday Card Memories

New 10 Sep 2015 Asked by paint2d 41 Comments

It's my birthday! yay! So my Trivia question is about the first magic card I ever saw Lowland Basilisk from Stronghold. I could not read at the time but the artwork and the description of "this kills everything it fights with" got me in to magic. If there is not much to talk about that card you could go with my favorite magic card Birthing Pod. :) Anyways thanks for so may cool magic cards!

One of my absolute favorite cards when I first started playing in Alpha was Thicket Basilisk. When I made Tempest, I made a slightly cheaper, slightly smaller Basilisk and put it in the set so others could have the same joy when they first opened it. Happy Birthday!

Hand-Battlefield Zone Transition

New 05 Sep 2015 Asked by reiversmusings 10 Comments

Also, hand -> battlefield transitions (ie show and tell) and library -> battlefield transitions (ie birthing pod) are well known as triggering etb effects. Why is this case unique?

Because it’s not moving from one zone to another., It’s being overlayed. This isn’t something black border does. You can’t just appear in a zone in black border.

Designing Game Challenges

New 26 Feb 2015 Asked by gutterstorm 28 Comments

So your answer yesterday about free sac outlets makes me worry: What's more important; never making something that can be broken or making things that will be fun? I know I'm in the minority being someone who finds storming and watching storm fun but combos involving sac outlets are usually not very competitive because they require several other cards. The Melira combo was only good because of Birthing Pod and eventually the combo got removed entirely for just being a good midrange deck.

Having to make decisions is a key part of what makes a game fun. Game designers aren’t supposed to take it easy on the players. We’re supposed to challenge you. Having mana on sacrifice outlets makes for a more strategic and interesting game not less.

No. It was made by a man named Joe Huber. I was on the design team and watched him make it.

Altering CMC Mechanic

New 05 Dec 2014 Asked by zzxyyzx 12 Comments

Hi Mark! Do you think it's possible that a card that alters a permanent's CMC ( e.g. like Trait Doctoring, so you could Birthing Pod said altered permanent for a higher costing dude ) could ever be printed? If so, what color would it be?

If it existed it would be blue, but it is both confusing and has potential power level issues if it can affect cards in the hand.

R&D Truth or Dare

Weekly R&D truth or dare game? I can't remember you mentioning that before, but now I'm intensely curious. Can you tell us more about that? How did it start? Has it influenced the game in ways besides Birthing Pod, or is it mostly just for fun?

Reread the question about Birthing Pod. : )

Alt-Win vs Synergies

New 25 Apr 2014 Asked by s--black 36 Comments

Also, I respectfully think you've missed the point in the question about "alt win conditions." The issue as I see it is not one of alt-wins (Battle of Wits) but one of card designs that suggest or demand specific synergies or deck construction. Recent examples include Delver of Secrets and Birthing Pod. Older examples include everything from High Tide to Burning Wish. In recent years, more and more Constructed cards promote "multicolor goodstuff" building over synergistic, distinct archetypes.

Aren’t devotion decks major players in Standard right now?

Color Iconic Creatures

New 30 Jun 2013 Asked by joeydevaux-deactivated20150828 8 Comments

"As it’s blue’s iconic creature, that’s unlikely, but I never say never." I only ask because that's never stopped Dragons or even Angels from appearing in other colors. Also, on the note of the Green iconic. If there were some sort of poll I would vote for Dinosaurs so long as they have an identity separate from Dragons. I like Hydras as X-cost creatures but that comes with a lot of baggage. I'll never really be able to Birthing Pod into a Hydra as we know them. etc. etc. etc.

Dragons are the only iconic to have appeared in every other monocolor and we do that very infrequently.

Venser's Ability Defense

New 20 Oct 2012 Asked by atournamentoflies 7 Comments

I don't know why someone would call Venser's -1 ability bad? I honestly think it is his best ability because at the right time it is a win condition. I played a Birthing Pod deck in Standard for as long as I could, so Venser became my favorite planeswalker so I was very saddened by his death.

Anyone who hates Venser’s -1 ability doesn’t understand why you would play Venser.
