Akroma, Angel of Wrath

Haste Keyword Placement

New 12 Jul 2021 Asked by blood-fish-god 28 Comments

Haste is actually the second last evergreen keyword after protection. The reason given in the past by someone else at WotC, I believe a former templating person on twitter, was that haste only matters for one turn while other keywords are always important. See Akroma, Angel of Wrath

White Creature Haste Ability

Color pie question that's been nagging at me a bit: I've taken a look around, and it looks like Akroma, Angel of Wrath is the only mono white creature with haste. Is this totally fine, a bend, or a break?

It’s a pretty major bend.

French Vanilla Definition

Curious: is a French Vanilla creature one with 1 evergreen keyword, or any number? For example, is Vampire Nighthawk (flying, lifelink, deathtouch) French Vanilla? Is there a point where a preponderance of keywords moves it out of French Vanilla territory (like, say, Akroma, Angel of Wrath)?

A French Vanilla creature can have any number of evergreen creature keywords.

Akroma's Memorial Trivia

New 03 Feb 2019 Asked by tyger2393 88 Comments

Hey Maro, for my birthday can I get some trivia on Akroma's Memorial?

We ran a poll (the precursor to Head-to-Head) with sixty-four legendary creatures. We said the winner would get their own theme week in the web site. Akroma won. This happen around the time we were picking the timeshifted cards for Time Spiral, so we decided to include it. (Technically, I think it was already on the sheet, but it got us to keep it.) Then in Planar Chaos, we were looking for characters to do alternate reality versions of. Because of the poll, we thought of Akroma. I joked that it was always weird Akroma, Angel of Wrath was white, so we made a monored version. When we got to Future Sight we realized we had started a mini-cycle across the block, but how did we do a future version of Akroma? What if in the future people starting revering her and made a monument? And that is how Akroma’s Memorial came to be.
Happy Birthday!

Mono White Haste

New 29 Oct 2015 Asked by hymdall 32 Comments

Now that I think about it, there only has been one MONO white creature with Haste, huh? That'd be everyone's favorite, Akroma, Angel of Wrath. All the other times it's white paired with another color(red usually). For a recent example: Munda, Ambush Leader is Red/White, but Haste is Primary in Red, so it's fine for him to have it, right?

A White card that requires Red to have haste is getting the haste from Red.

I believe Akroma, Angel of WRATH is in White : )

So is Wrath of God. Still doesn’t make the sin White.

Choosing Avacyn Over Akroma

New 26 Jun 2014 Asked by dlilly8021 26 Comments

I saw Avacyn in the spoilers this morning and I have to wonder, why not Akroma, Angel of Wrath or some variant?

Because she hasn’t been playing a role in the current storyline like Avacyn has.

Akroma Hindsight

Considering how well Akroma, Angel of Wrath went over with players, myself being one of them, how do you feel about the card in hindsight?

I was wrong. It was the right choice.

Akroma's Haste Trait

New 20 Mar 2012 Asked by mxmlmn 2 Comments

I don't know if I've asked this before, but it's something that's always bothered me. Why does Akroma, Angel of Wrath have haste and Akroma, Angel of Fury does not? My hypothesis is that Redkromas Morph ability is supposed to act as a psuedo-haste, but from a color pie standpoint it doesn't make much sense to me.

The original Akroma wanted a whole bunch of keywords. We decided at the time to make a special exception (which we do once in a blue moon with certain abilities) because Akroma was meant to be a very special card and the haste worked so well with the design. (For what is was worth, I wasn’t happy about it.) When we did the red Akroma we didn’t want to repeat any of the abilities (besides the flight and shifted protection) so we left haste off.
