Turn to Frog

Hybrid Spell Effects

New 19 Apr 2020 Asked by pontemosca 24 Comments

Could a blue/green hybrid spell do the "Turn to Frog" effect with the right power and toughness combination? "Only if it can only hit your own creature." Is Snake Form a break for green then?

We were experimenting with green doing that at the time. It’s more of a bend now.

Blue Color Pie

New 12 Jan 2018 Asked by sebusol 31 Comments

are "humble" and "turn to frog" type effects now firmly in the blue color pie? and roughly when did that happen? thanks :)

Blue transforms creatures but we’re trying to steer away from it turning them into mostly useless creatures.

Color Polymorphing Effects

New 16 Jan 2017 Asked by originalskaiil 41 Comments

So blue has gotten some cards like Turn to Frog and Gift of Tusks with "transforming" effects, and assuming this type of effect isn't going away, do you suppose it's justifiable in red?

We’ve just given Red Polymorphing like effects. Blue knows what it’s transforming creatures into while Red does not.

Creature Transformations

Would you say dealing with creatures by transforming it into something else is more of a White thing (Darksteel Mutation) or a Blue thing (Turn to Frog/Rapid Hybridization)?

Blue.

Imprison in the Moon Logic

New 08 Jul 2016 Asked by choppenstantz 35 Comments

About Imprison in the Moon; doesn't it fit blue because A, polymorph(is this the blanket term for not only Polymorph the card, but also Turn to Frog AND Rapid Hybridization effects?) is a blue effect that lets you get rid of/modify a creature, and B, blue also has a history of Phantasmal Terrain-type effects that let you change lands from something to another thing? I mean, it's not perfect, and definitely a bend, but I think it makes sense in context.

It’s a bend and not a break, but it’s a decent bend.

Tribal Supertype Complications

New 25 Jun 2016 Asked by my-annoying-brain 22 Comments

FYI to questionmarks: the reason Tribal couldn't be a supertype with "things with Tribal can have creature types" is because of what happens if it loses that supertype then it would either have to a) still have those subtypes but unbound to any of the object's types (causing havoc with things like Turn to Frog), or b) lose the subtypes alongside the supertype, which is inconsistent with how subtype loss works in any other situation.

Frogs vs. Squirrels

New 17 Apr 2016 Asked by abundantfrog 46 Comments

so magic is a game that has giant frogs but can't even represent a normal squirrel? note a normal sized frog is a 1/1 via turn to frog. Squirrels have to be able to beat up frogs.

People send me article all the time of people being attacked by Squirrels. Hasn’t swayed the creative team.

Defining Vanilla Creatures

How can Dryad Arbor be vanilla if Turn to Frog can make it lose its ability?

It depends on how you define Vanilla. My definition is “creature with no rules text”.

Blue Polymorph Theme

New 07 Dec 2014 Asked by theonlymegumegu 21 Comments

Does blue turning creatures into 1/1s temporarily (Turn to Frog, etc) match with Blue's polymorphing capabilities?

As I said earlier, I’d rather Blue not turn things into 1/1 and 0/1 and that’s much closer to a destruction spell.

Blue: Turn to Frog. Green: Turn to Log. Black: Turn to Bog. White: Turn to Dog. Red: Turn to Mogg.

Blue Removal Philosophy

New 26 Apr 2014 Asked by fatherofmachines 24 Comments

Follow up to the last question on blue removal: Why does blue get things like Curse of the Swine or Rapid Hybridization? While the flavor is spot on, the game reality is still basically destruction. Cards like Turn to Frog, Ovinize, and Snakeform feel like what blue "removal" should be. How are Polymorph and friends not just based around using a flavor justification to give a color an ability it shouldn't have?

Blue is allowed to change things. There’s no color pie breaking. Note that we make sure that they are changing into something still potent so it’s not “just removal”.

Permanent Effect Challenges

New 06 Jan 2013 Asked by askkaalia-deactivated20150304 11 Comments

You say the rules can't handle turning one thing into another, but what about "Turn To Frog"? Can't the rules department just add "this effect lasts indefinitely" or just take off the "until end of turn" clause? Or am I missing something?

The issue there is a memory one. Who don’t like changing things permanently when there’s no representation of the change to remind players. So yes, the game can do it but not in a way we are comfortable with.

Pongify's Polymorph Feel

New 15 Aug 2012 Asked by extremeconsiderationthemovie 0 Comments

dose Pongify destroy the creature because Turn to Frog effects are awkward and hard to remember when they lack an "till end of turn" text?

It uses the word “destroy” because that’s the template we use. It could say “replace” or “turns into” if we supported it and I agree it would have a better feel of polymorphing.

Blue Transformation Uses

New 05 Aug 2012 Asked by cartoonwonderful-deactivated201 2 Comments

Would Blue be able to use its transforming ability (Turn to Frog) to help its creatures? Turn to Frog can target any creature yes, but if it turned the creature into a 3/3 rather than a 1/1, blue could use it to get some more powerful than usual (for blue) in. Would this be in color pie, and could it be available at common?

Transformation is a blue ability. Like any ability, we need to be careful to make sure it is doing its own thing and not mimicking some other ability.

Blue Transformation Spells

What do you think of Pongify? is out of the color pie? and is Turn to Frog some kind of "Update"?

I feel transformation of others fits perfectly in blue. Turn to Frog is another card in the Pongify family.

Turn to Frog Origin

Did the idea for "turn to frog" come from "fowl play"?

The Un-sets have had a lot of influence on black bordered Magic so possibly.

Blue Color Adjustments

New 10 Mar 2012 Asked by pseudolias 5 Comments

Why doesn't blue get as many -X/+X or +X/-X as well as other "transforming" effects anymore (I don't mean like in Innistrad block.) like Ovinize, Turn to Frog, and Polymorph? Also, what of vigilance? It helps blue play defensively, and affects tapping/untapping, which blue seems to like manipulating.

We had a big chat about the color pie of +X/-X and -X/+X and decided that we need to see it in blue more so you will.
