Gitrog Monster Origins

New 15 May 2024 Asked by darkfox190 3 Comments

I still have a couple hours left in my birthday, and I'd like to request some birthday trivia about the design of the original Gitrog Monster!

During world building, one of the artist sketched the Gitrog Monster as part of the world building. Everyone liked it so much, we made a card for it.Happy Birthday!

Fantasy Game Mounts

New 29 Mar 2024 Asked by jjustin1379 55 Comments

Why are some of the mounts just so unlikely to ever actually be mounts like the gitrog monster and a porcupine? I expected more obvious mounts

Because Magic is a fantasy game.

Gitrog and Thalia's Friendship

The ultimate question:

Will the Gitrog Monster stay friends with Thalia?

Maybe they can start a book club. : )

Elder Type Missing

New 20 Feb 2023 Asked by mgmegadog 44 Comments

I understand why the class types of the team-up cards are missing, but why is Ghalta and Mavren missing the Elder type? I wouldn't consider that a class anymore than I'd consider "Horror" or "Spirit" a class on Thalia and the Gitrog Monster or Yargle and Multani.

Elder is odd as it’s neither race nor class.

Trivias on Gitrog Monster and Prosper

New 05 May 2022 Asked by jirachibi2550 35 Comments

Its my GF's birthday and she wanted trivia about either Gitrog Monster or Prosper, Tome Bound :)

I believe the Gitrog Monster was first drawn in the World push (three weeks where artist come in to flesh out the world), and everyone liked it, so we made a card for it. Happy Birthday to your girlfriend!

Gitrog Monster Naming

New 11 Dec 2021 Asked by marcantoniosavelli 57 Comments

Dear Mark, the card "The Gitrog Monster" made me assume that it was a monster living in a place called Gitrog. But the new card seems to indicate that Gitrog is the monster's proper name..how come?

It’s kind of like the Loch Ness Monster that people call Nessie.

Gitrog Monster vs Krark

New 10 Apr 2021 Asked by the-machine-orthodoxy 81 Comments

In their ranking of all commanders of all time, The Nitpicking Nerds had a tie for the number one spot between The Gitrog Monster and Krark The Thumbless. The tie was settled with a coin flip, but I'm sorry to say Krark lost.

If only he had one of his thumbs.

Commander Deck Inclusions

New 25 Aug 2019 Asked by jjustin1379 43 Comments

Why are cards that seem to work perfectly with the commander decks sometimes not placed in the decks? Godsire seemed a perfect fit in the token deck and the gitrog monster seemed perfect for last years land deck.

Two answers:1) There are a lot of cards that could be considered a “perfect fit”, and that designation can change player to player.2) Commander decks, like any product, have restrictions for the people designing them. What seems like an obvious inclusion might have not been possible for a whole host of reasons.

Squee Trivia

New 25 Jan 2018 Asked by thebiggesttoad-blog 37 Comments

Hi Mark, thank you for making the game I love! I was wondering if you had any birthday trivia about my favorite creature, Squee! Alternatively the Gitrog Monster is also a thoroughly enjoyable fellow.

Squee was named after the flavor text from the original Relentless Assault. I wrote that flavor text in a meeting to replace a previous rhyme I didn’t like. Squee came from me trying to find a goblin name that rhymed with “tree”. HappyBirthday!

Naming Monstrous Entities

New 17 Jun 2017 Asked by abelzumi 200 Comments

With "The Scorpion God," "The Gitrog Monster," and previous cards like "The Unspeakable" and "The Mimeoplasm," will we see a trend going forwards of cards that use this naming convention for an alien or monstrous purpose?

The Yes.

Gitrog Trivia

It's my birthday today. I wanted to know any trivia about my favorite commander, The Gotrog Monster.

The pose of the Gitrog Monster mimics the pose of Chub Toad from Ice Age. Happy Birthday!

Frog and Horror Trivia

New 20 Nov 2016 Asked by jamesmountainmanstealereye-blog 49 Comments

Just barely missed my birthday, but can I get some trivia about the Frog and/or Horror subtypes? : )

The arm hanging out of the Gitrog Monster is a nod to the Frog card Chub Toad.Happy Birthday!

Legendary Stories

New 07 Aug 2016 Asked by skraz1265 52 Comments

Regarding legendary characters in the story: Would it be possible to do less stories completely centered around one legendary creature (ala the Gitrog Monster's story) and using that space to make stories that include multiple legendaries? I know I would rather have more legendaries with smaller roles in stories than fewer legendaries starring in their own stories like we have now.

Telling good stories is a higher priority than mentioning as many legendary creatures as possible in stories.

Chub Toad Influence

New 01 Aug 2016 Asked by darrinkatzska 39 Comments

How much influence did Chub Toad have over the design of The Gitrog Monster?

The only influence was a nod in the art.

Gitrog Gatewatch Fantasy

New 24 Jun 2016 Asked by glasstiki-blog1 168 Comments

Can I get a maybe that the Gitrog Monster eats Gideon and takes his place on the Gatewatch? This would get rid of the least interesting man in the multiverse, create that nonhumanoid planeswalker people are asking for, and add black mana to the team. Plus I'm sure there are all sorts of probably plane threatening things for the Gitrog to control and ingest on other worlds.

A bold suggestion.

Gitrog Monster Design

New 20 Jun 2016 Asked by mranderson75-deactivated2019013 34 Comments

Why was is that R&D decided the Gitrog Monster would eat lands and not creatures? This seems a bit out of touch with the flavor of the lore.

We opted for the better gameplay.

Gitrog Monster Origin

New 06 Jun 2016 Asked by battosai83 65 Comments

So my birthday was Thursday and my request for trivia seems to have fallen by the wayside. Any chance I could get some info on the Gitrog Monster?

The Gitrog Monster was one of those things that the world building team came up with where the snowball kept rolling and by the time it got to design was this thing we just had to do. Happy Belated Birthday!

Legendary Creature Likelihood

New 14 May 2016 Asked by philippesaner 58 Comments

Does the popularity of The Gitrog Monster make it more likely that we'll see a legendary Squirrel? Or a legendary version of any other animal creature type?

No. Yes.

Gitrog Monster Pun

New 08 May 2016 Asked by gaytog 94 Comments

"If I was in charge of names, I guarantee there would be more puns. I don’t have good current examples. Give me one and I’ll pun-ify it : )" How about The Gitrog Monster?

Frog of War. : )

Gitrog Gender

New 02 Apr 2016 Asked by mandenmeddengulehat 33 Comments

"enchantedspoons asked: What is the secret to satisfying our new lord and master, the great Gitrog monster? He likes flies." If THE Gitrog Monster is a HE, I wouldn't want to meet his wife as the female frogs and toads are often much larger than the males.

I do not know if the Gitrog frog is male, female, both or neither. I defaulted to “He” out of societal habit.
