Splinter

Specific Insect Types

New 30 Jul 2023 Asked by doopboopdoop 42 Comments

Could we ever see insects broken down into more specific types? Like say bees or ants

I think that would just splinter insects, making it even harder to build a deck around them.

Splinter Twin on The List

Why is Splinter Twin on The List if it's banned in Modern?

Because it’s legal in other formats.

Splitting the Magic Community

New 27 Feb 2021 Asked by shadesofpink 128 Comments

Just to provide a contrasting point against your "economy of scale" argument, I feel that the community backlash against these crossovers is such that, while the likelihood of finding a magic community near you is greater than , however I doubt many magic players will accept them into their game. It will likely splinter the community in two (not kill it though, like you wanted ;) )

As someone who monitors both the online communities and reads the market research, it’s been my experience that the loud messaging on the internet and the desires of the majority of the players do not always line up.

Commander 2019 Excitement

New 22 Feb 2019 Asked by ascan7 56 Comments

Sorry to say that but i'm terribly unexcited by the commander 2019 announcement. No teaser art, not even single sentence about its themes. The general lack of informations about the next products is making me bored and uncertain, i don't know if you should keep my money for this summer's magic products or buy something else.

I think the announcements were more to positionally put them on the year’s calendar than tease them. We have a lot of products and if we tease too many at once, it splinters the conversation too much. We will tease the Commander decks closer to their release. We just had the slide show for them, and I’m pretty confident the Commander fans are going to be happy.

Un Cube Interaction Query

New 02 Feb 2019 Asked by a2b63c-blog 39 Comments

While playing an Un cube with some friends, we came across an interaction we figured we should ask the official Unrules manager about. If I have a library enchanted with Animate Library, and make a copy of that library using splinter twin, what does it make?

Not what you want. A non-animated library that you can’t draw off of, basically you get nothing.

Splinter Twin Comparison

Re: Splinter Twin on legs, isn't that just Kiki-Jiki, Mirror Breaker?

Kiki-Jiki can copy many creatures, but Splinter Twin only copies one.

Prime Speaker Vannifar

New 26 Jan 2019 Asked by jul0798-blog 51 Comments

I just wanted to say thank you to all responsible for printing Prime Speaker Vannifar, as I think it's a very elegant way to breath some life into the old Birthing Pod style lists without making the effect overly problematic. It's one of my favorite cards printed recently. Is it possible we could see a similar fix for Splinter Twin?

That’s a little trickier to replicate on a creature.

Green's Exiling Rarity

New 12 Jul 2018 Asked by gophilipbowles 37 Comments

If all colours have access to exiling, what are the reasons for the scarcity of the effect in green? Only three green cards (plus one Un-card) can exile a target permanent: Fade into Antiquity, Splinter (part of a cycle of exile effects) and Unnatural Aggression (from a set with exile as a theme, in which other Eldrazi colours got more exile effects than green did). It's rare enough that it appears to be a defining weakness of the colour in a world of recursive and indestructible threats.

Green is fifth in the effect, but is still allowed access to it.

Splinter Twin Ban

New 08 Oct 2017 Asked by splintertwinplayer 32 Comments

Hi Mark, do you think that Splinter Twin should remain banned in modern right now having a format with a pair of turn 3 combos on it? Thanks.

It’s so far out of my area of expertise that I have no idea.

Splinter Twin Messages

New 10 Jan 2017 Asked by sorin-slackov-bored-of-innistrad 31 Comments

So how many messages have you gotten about Splinter Twin being an Aura?

A few. I was thinking cards banned in Standard when I asked, but obviously I didn’t clarify.

Banning Transparency

New 10 Jan 2017 Asked by zwomally 36 Comments

In your Metamorphosis article you were very upfront about the length of time KTK cards would be standard legal so we would "understand the impact before [we] purchased the cards." Then as a company you reprinted Splinter Twin in Modern Masters 2015 and then banned it in Modern. Then today's bannings. To keep up with the transparency you wanted to bring with the format changes, would it be possible to have an official list of cards being monitored for bannings?

We don’t have the ability to predict the future. We do try to be transparent, but if we don’t know, it’s hard to tell you all.In the past we’ve tried having a "watch list" for cards we were thinking about possibly naming but it panicked people more than calmed them down.

Partial Bans Challenge

New 10 Jan 2017 Asked by teh-maxh 24 Comments

Has there ever been consideration of banning certain uses of cards, without banning the card entirely? (For example, Splinter Twin is a potentially useful, but not broken, card on its own; it's only a problem when it goes infinite.) What arguments killed the idea?

The messaging and policing of partially banning cards is too difficult.

Togglodyte and Splinter Twin

New 29 Aug 2016 Asked by clawlord 15 Comments

Un-rules question: If I enchant my Togglodyte with a Splinter Twin, will it copy the on/off status of the original or always enter the battlefield on?

The copy will start in its initial state as if it were just cast.

Un-sets and Audience

New 27 Jun 2016 Asked by dhemmann 37 Comments

"The fear there is splintering the Magic audience. We don’t want FNM drafts to not fire because four are playing Harry Potter Magic and four are playing Traditional Magic." Wouldn't another un-set splinter the Magic audience in the same way?

Silver border is by definition casual and thus is not the kind of thing that should divide the FNM crowd. In the past Un-sets have mostly just been played in limited in stores and in constructed in casual play. The fact that Commander hasn’t caused this problem is a sign Un-set’s wouldn’t either.

Sci-Fi Sister Game

New 02 May 2016 Asked by vileevil-deactivated20181203 27 Comments

With the keeping of science fiction separate from Magic; do you think there's a possibility of a sister game to Magic that could be based on science fiction?

The problem is making a parallel game would just splinter the audience.

Red's Hasty Clones

"Could red have a hasty, dies-at-end-of-turn clone?" Like Splinter Twin or Kiki-Jiki?

I think they meant now.

Reprint and Ban Philosophy

New 19 Jan 2016 Asked by thesumofallnoobs 124 Comments

Who was responsible for the Splinter Twin reprint in MM2015? I hope he/she is fired, because that was completly a mistake, if not a joke to all players to reprint a valuable card and ban it less than a year later.

Do you have any idea what we’re going to ban a year from now? How about two years from now? Neither do we. Because of our lead time to physically print sets, we have to make decisions long before we know the future environment.

Sliver Transformation

New 06 Dec 2015 Asked by viseling 41 Comments

When slivers underwent their make-over did you kick around the idea of simply calling the new slivers something else (ala shroud and hexproof)? Fragments perhaps? Splinters? Crumbs?

We did seriously consider it but decided to keep it Slivers to allow interaction between the old and new versions.

Green's Limitations

No.

Tribal Type Explanation

New 07 Sep 2015 Asked by jakehawke-blog 22 Comments

"... as we no longer used Tribal." I guess I don't really understand what Tribal means, then. I thought that it basically meant when there are cards in a set that have an effect based upon the sub-type of another card, like Human, Elf, Splinter, or Ally. :/

I was talking about Tribal, the card type. In Rise of the Eldrazi, it allowed us to make all the noncreature Eldrazi spells to have the subtype Eldrazi.
