Rules Lawyer

Aether Vortex Query

New 22 Nov 2023 Asked by aalgot 34 Comments

For form of the approach of the second sun + aether vortex. How much loyalty do we have?

None inherently. You’ll need something like Rules Lawyer to keep from being removed from the battlefield for having no loyalty.

Acorn Rules Inquiry

New 12 Nov 2023 Asked by acornquestions 61 Comments

Hey Mark, Acorn question: If I become a card due to my Form of the Approach of the Second Sun, do I have any rules? Can I cast myself with Future Sight (even if I stop being a card once I enter the stack, because I left my library)? Is there anything that I can do with myself being on the battlefield due to Yet Another Æther Vortex?

You don’t have rules text or a mana cost, but I have ruled you are a planeswalker. If you get onto the battlefield with Yet Another Aether Vortex, you’ll need something like Rules Lawyer to keep from being destroyed by having 0 loyalty.

Unstable vs Unfinity

New 12 Mar 2023 Asked by armeizh 59 Comments

Hi Mark, yesterday we drafted a stashed box of Unstable. It involved "As Luck Would Have It" as high as 61 counters; a Five-Fingers Discount on Rules Lawyer to turn a game around and win at a negative life total; round 1 getting overtime because one player had to play two games at once due to Better Than One; and a player without a board state topdecking Over My Dead Bodies for a massive attack that left the opponent just one life short of lethal, fitting for a horror villain's last lunge. All in all a good time for everyone, and for what it's worth it confirmed that I liked Unstable more than Unfinity. Contraptions play better than stickers, and the "silly themes" feel more scattered in Unfinity, which makes the draft a bit more daunting as it's harder to get a feel for whether your deck will "get there" in terms of playability. The puns and flavour and individual cards are still solid, though! I just enjoy Unstable more.

I think Attractions are the closer thing to compare Contraptions to. Which you prefer depends on how much you enjoy planning ahead. Contraptions are Spike-ier and Attractions are Timmy/Tammy-ier.I’m glad you enjoy Unstable. I spent a lot of time on that too, and am always happy to hear people enjoying it. Stickers ended up being more polarizing than I expected. Part of it was logistical issues that we didn’t have a lot of control over.

Unfinity Set Queries

New 31 Aug 2022 Asked by sdespencer 37 Comments

Hey! I wanted to say I’m really excited for Unfinity and the concept of a hypothetical Un-set Reprint set that can put previously silver bordered cards into eternal is pretty much a dream. On that note I do have a question: if that kind of set ever got the chance to happen, do you think Rules Lawyer would be eternal as it works within the rules, or would it not work because of play design issues?

You’ll see when Unfinity comes out, some cards are acorn for play design reasons and not just rules reasons.

Complications with Rules Lawyer

New 14 Mar 2022 Asked by sniccups63 43 Comments

I think the main reason for Rules Lawyer being acorn is that it lets creatures with 0 toughness stay on the battlefield. The rules don't have any way to handle that - the state-based action that gets rid of them *is* the solution.

That’s a great example of the problem. The game doesn’t have a back-up for a number of issues because that rule is the definitive answer.

Discussing Acorn in Un-Cards

New 14 Mar 2022 Asked by itzliquauhtli 37 Comments

Happy π day, Mark! I had an interesting discussion recently about the new Black Border Un-cards. More specifically, whether Rules Lawyer would be an acorn card if it were printed for the first time in Unfinity instead of Unstable.

I believe it will still be acorn as it does some very weird corner case things.

Blogatog's New Hire Speculation

New 17 May 2021 Asked by gabecampos89 35 Comments

"That assumes Blogatog follows state based actions." Sir, any comments on Blogatog's recent hiring of a certain Rules Lawyer, following speculation about it's *ahem* agressive diet?

[Rules Lawyer] Allowance in Black Border

New 29 Nov 2020 Asked by yunasjet 27 Comments

If it wasn't for things like flavour/complexity, could the black border rules allow [Rules Lawyer]?

It causes really weird interactions which black border rules tend to avoid.

If/When a creature that doesn't leave play when it has 0 toughness?

It happens when Rules Lawyer (from Unstable) is on the battlefield.

Putrefax Rules Query

New 20 Mar 2019 Asked by magicthecasual 33 Comments

I know you're not a rules lawyer but I don't know where else to ask this. Putrefax says at the beginning of THE endstep. Does this mean EACH or MY endstep

It means “each”.

Rules Lawyer Interactions

"An Augment can’t exist without being attached to a Host. If it somehow gets on the battlefield, it goes to the graveyard just as an unattached Aura would." What if you control a Rules Lawyer?

Then it would just sit there doing nothing but stay on the battlefield. Things that counted permanents (or creatures as it’s technically a creature) would care about/count it.

Rules Lawyer Trivia

New 24 Sep 2018 Asked by gaelan 67 Comments

Shoot, I forgot to ask for trivia on my birthday yesterday. Can I have some trivia on Rules Lawyer?

The design for Rules Lawyer started with me going to the Rules Lawyer (at the time Matt Tabak) and asking, “If we wanted to remove one rule from the Comp Rules that would have the biggest impact, but the game would still work, what rule should it be?” Matt knew right away which one to remove. Happy Birthday!

Will do.

Rules Lawyer Mechanics

New 23 May 2018 Asked by changethecomic 48 Comments

If I have Rules Lawyer on the battlefield, sagas I control will keep gaining tokens (a triggered ability) but not get sacrificed (a state-based action), but they won't do anything beyond the third counter, right?

Correct.

Contraption Rules

New 06 Apr 2018 Asked by egyptcraze 28 Comments

un-judge! i need a ruling please! can i time out a contraption, and does it just go to the scrapyard as a statebased action since it cant go into its owner's library (obv ignoring rules lawyer shenanigans)?

If Contraptions would go to any zone other than the battlefield, they go to the scrapyard instead.

Unstable had Rules Lawyer.

Augment and Rules Lawyer

New 20 Dec 2017 Asked by bigsphinxofquartz 33 Comments

"State based effects will put a lone Augment card on the battlefield into its owner’s graveyard." what if you have Rules Lawyer on the battlefield? is it just a 0/0 creature with a meaningless ability?

Yep.

Infinity Elemental Mechanics

New 19 Dec 2017 Asked by doesthisresolve-blog 62 Comments

So Unstable Rules Question; According to the FAQAWASLFAQPAFTIDAWABIAJTBT if I am at infinite life and get hit by an infinity elemental my life total is still infinite. If for some reason I lose infinite life, such as being hit by infinity elemental or having it flung at me, I go to negative infinite. However, if I have rules lawyer in play and subsequently find a way to gain infinite life do I stay at negative infinity or go up to infinity?

No. Infinity minus any number, including infinity which is a number in silver border, is still infinity. Basically, once you have infinite life, you’re not dying to damage.

Rules Lawyer Interaction

Mark, very important question, if I'm destroyed by Baron von Count and I have a Rules Lawyer on the field, do my permanents stay on the battlefield after I'm destroyed? Thanks

No, when you get destroyed, you permanents go with you.
