Nevermore

Stickers and Game Mechanics

New 12 Aug 2022 Asked by petruscaex 31 Comments

Mark, regarding Stickers I still don't understand how they work with Pithing Needle and Nevermore effects. Can you explain it please?

Putting a name sticker on a card changes its name, so it will stop Pithing Needle from affecting it.

Name a Card Effects

Could white get more "name a card" effects like Nevermore or Runed Halo, or have those fallen out of favor with R&D?

Still in white.

White vs Blue Abilities

New 03 Feb 2019 Asked by lastnobody 59 Comments

To the white vs blue debate: I can understand your point (or I try at least), but there are just a few things I'd point out: White can't deal with instants or sorceries except for silence or nevermore effects so it cant deal with everything. Blue on the on the other hand can deal with any spell and even abilities if it meets the timing (Counterspells) and even deal with it later by bouncing or stealing it. Cyclonic rift is even considered one of the best wipes in commander.

Ways white can deal with spells:- proactively stop them from being cast- fizzle the spell by making the target illegal (with things like protection)- prevent damage from a spell- bring back things destroyed by the spell It’s fine to say blue is better at it than white (and it is as counterspell it is one of blue’s greatest strengths), but blanket dismissals don’t help your argument. Also, it’s odd to say white can’t do something except a few examples that do it well and then say blue can do mass removal when it’s also just a handful of spells in blue that actually do that.

Meddling Mage Clarification

The monowhite Meddling Mage-esque card you mentioned is Nevermore. It's a 1WW enchantment with the exact effect of Meddling Mage.

Raven Man Identity Query

Will we ever know who the raven man is exactly?

That’s a question for Doug.If you asked the Raven Man, I believe he’d say “Nevermore.” : )

Pre-emptive Countering Nuances

New 09 Jul 2014 Asked by kallixti 15 Comments

When you say white gets pre-emptive countering, are you just talking about things like Nevermore? Or could white get things like Hesitation/Decree of Silence?

White doesn’t get a blanket counter spell. It gets to choose some subset (which might even be just a single card) and then stop it from being cast.

Color Alignment

Is Look at me, I'm the DCI in color for white? It reminds me a lot of slaughter games and the like, but it is also like nevermore and them.

White gets pre-emptive countering.

Red's Punishment Effects

New 17 May 2014 Asked by doopboopdoop 44 Comments

Could red do a nevermore style effect where instead of banning the card it instead burns a player when they play it or otherwise punishes them?

Red can burn anything or anyone at any time for any reason. That’s something well in red’s wheelhouse.

Un-cards to Black Borders

New 05 Feb 2013 Asked by tomaslw-deactivated20181230 3 Comments

There have been a few black bordered cards that started their lives as Un-cards. I kno that The Cheese Stands Alone became Barren Glory, Look at Me, I'm the DCI is very similar to Nevermore , Rocket-Powered Turbo Slug inspired the Pact-cycle and Infernal Spawn of Evil led to the Forecast mechanics. Are there any that I missed?

A bunch, yes. I’m not going be able to recall them all of the top of my head. The biggest is the split cards came from Unglued 2, the Un-set that never got made. Timmy. Power Gamer became Elvish Piper. The full-art lands and the token cards both got their start in Unglued. It’s unfortunately too early for my memory to be working at its best.

Nevermore Curse Status

New 03 Oct 2011 Asked by bluelotus0-blog 3 Comments

Why isn't Nevermore a curse?

It originally was a curse but we decided to help isolate white as the one “good” color surrounded by “evil” monsters, we kept all “evil” things out of white which included curses.

Inspiration Unveiled

New 19 Sep 2011 Asked by dukkhasatva 1 Comments

Nevermore has the exact same textbox as Meddling Mage. How can you say it was a Un-card that inspired it? =p

How can I say that an Un-card inspired it?  Because an Un-card inspired it. I was looking for a curse for white and was inspired to make the card by Look At Me, I’m the DCI. In trying to figure out how to do it in black-bordered Magic, I realized that the answer was to use the Meddling Mage rules text.
