Sliver Birthday Fact

New 20 Apr 2023 Asked by rwssr 38 Comments

Hi Mark! My birthday was 4/17. I’m 43 now. Can I please get a birthday trivia factoid on either Sliver Hivelord or Sliver Overlord? :)

When we put Slivers in Magic 2014, we didn’t make a five-color Sliver as we’d done with previously Sliver printings. The audience wasn’t happy about that, so we ended up putting one, Sliver Hivelord, in (along with a cycle of Slivers) Magic 2015.Happy Birthday!

Will you please pass along a request for a secret lair of the best M14 slivers with new art that looks like slivers?

Will do.

Sliver Set Challenges

New 28 Aug 2022 Asked by metallix87 29 Comments

Do you think we could see a return of Slivers to a premier set where the bulk of them are reprints? I'm sure a lot of players would like to see the M14 Slivers reprinted with the classic Sliver visual design. This would also solve for the issue of a lack of new space to make new Slivers in a premier set.

It helps solve for the design space issue (although lots of reprints vs. new cards might make some Sliver fans unhappy), but doesn’t handle the structural issue (that it forces a lot if demands into the structure of a set).

Appreciating Game Improvements

New 14 Jan 2022 Asked by cheeseconsumer 36 Comments

One of my favourite things avout magic is how it improves over time. The bad parts of the game are constantly updated and changed. (Damage on the stack, mana burn, weak creatures, M14 silvers.) And now the Orochi. One of my most hated things about original Kamigawa was the snakes having legs. Didn't care for the four arms either but I'll take it. Thank you for fixing things that are broken instead of keeping them the same. I wouldn't be still playing if you didn't.

Happy to hear you’re still playing. : )

Let’s call it a big bend.

Core Set Legends Correction

New 29 Jun 2020 Asked by elvish-mysticcc 37 Comments

Not to nitpick, but you say in today's article that no core set from Alpha through Magic 2014 had any legendary creatures, but Tenth Edition had 10 reprinted ones and Magic 2013 had a whole cycle (that notably introduced fan-favorite characters Odric and Krenko). Very informative article on the whole though!

Oops. My mistake.

Role of Blogatog in Retention

New 25 May 2020 Asked by shivandragonhorde 14 Comments

I played Magic in 94/95 but left for a time. M14 brought me back in. Reading Blogatog regularly has kept me more engaged, increased my interest and as a result connected me to a great community of people. Thanks for all you do and happy birthday!

Thank you.

Revival of Slivers

New 27 Feb 2020 Asked by tchukkelz 58 Comments

Hey Mark, a question on Slivers: When reviving the tribe in M14, their signature mechanic was changed from symmetrical bonuses (“all Slivers”) to one sided bonuses (“Slivers you control). At that point, why not just create a new tribe? Especially if you were gonna change their design!

The creature type had equity with the players.

Sliver Design Preference

New 22 May 2019 Asked by csdragon 70 Comments

High fives to everyone for bringing slivers back, but especially high-fives to the person who first said "let's use the real slivers not the m14 slivers". I love that we're back to the "snake with one arm and beak" design that's so iconicly Sliver

The humanoid Slivers were on Shandalar and appeared in Magic 2014. Magic 2015 had a return to the Rathi/Dominarian ones. The message was pretty clear that the old look was more beloved.

Silvers' Aesthetic Return

New 24 Mar 2018 Asked by raulsquared 40 Comments

When silvers finally do return will they return to their pre m14 aesthetic? I know the m14 style of effects is here to stay, but just curious about the look

It depends what plane we’re on.

Good point. : )

Commander 2014 Clarification

New 04 Nov 2017 Asked by theuninvitedghost 23 Comments

Sometimes it seems like you enjoy giving short answers that aren't clear and necessitate additional follow-up questions. Anyway... "By printing them on cards." Ok. What is it about the Planeswalkers printed in M14 that make them pre-mending? They seem just like other versions, to me.

I was talking about Commander 2014 and accidentally said Magic 2014.

Planeswalker Edition Mistake

When you said magic 2014 had pre mending walkers, you meant commander 2014 right?

Oops. Yes, I meant Commander 2014.

Pre-Mending Nostalgia

"Magic 2014 opened the door to nostalgic pre-Mending planeswalkers" How did it do that?

By printing them on cards.

Magic 2014 opened the door to nostalgic pre-Mending planeswalkers, so there’s always a chance.

Booster Pack Trivia

New 05 Aug 2017 Asked by thewonderdoc-deactivated2020013 28 Comments

Wanted to possibly add some info on the booster pack size trivia from the DTW. From Conflux until Magic 2014 6-card booster packs were sold at mass-market retailers like Walmart. They had 1 tip card/token, 1 land, 3 commons, 1 uncommon and one slot that was 50/50 rare or mythic.

Earth References

New 16 Jul 2017 Asked by theonetrueqriist 49 Comments

Regarding Earth in the Multiverse. A quick study of Gatherer reveals 26 cards across 59 printings that reference an IRL William. Faulkner/Yeats/Knox x1 each, Blake x2, and Shakespeare x21 (ref'ing 15 works). Most notable among these is Pay no Heed. The original Torment printing had a unique (if generic) quote while the Magic 2014 printing that came 11 years later and had a quote from Shakespeare's King Henry IV, Part I. Sir, what are your thoughts?

Magic cards exist on Earth. Real world flavor text doesn’t mean Earth is part of the Magic Multiverse.

Unblockable Mechanic Explanation

New 15 Jan 2016 Asked by judge-natedogg 16 Comments

Matt Tabak explained why it doesn't really work back in the Magic 2014 Core Set Rules Preview. In short, there's many different types of unblockable/can't be blocked, and it would be weird and counterintuitive if some versions of unblockable behaved like keywords but not other versions.

Updated Slivers Query

New 23 Dec 2015 Asked by neverletagoodmangotowar 15 Comments

What're these new sliver-esque cards people are complaining about? I can't seem to find them?

They are referring to the Slivers from Magic 2014 where we changed their look from the original Tempest shape and made them only affect Slivers you own and not all the Slivers on the battlefield.
