Opinions on Copy Effects

New 02 Jun 2024 Asked by clevibert 63 Comments

To contrast the opinion that a previous asker had about magic making too many doppelgangers, I really like the effect and don't feel it to be over powered.
When I started playing magic, around M13, I was in college and didn't have much disposable income. It seemed like the "cheap" cards I could afford were all clone type cards and cards that could cast my opponents instants and sorceries. I ended up getting so many cards I made a Wrexial, the risen deep EDH deck. I would commonly get asked "How good is your deck?" My reply was always, "I don't know, how good is YOUR deck?" It carried me a good long time and provided lots of fun for myself as I was trying to figure out how to essentially win with their deck and a fun challenge for my friends as they had to play around their own cards.
TLDR: please don't change how many doppelganger/copy style cards you're creating.

How do others feel about cards that copy the opponent’s cards?

Trivia on Stormtide and Talrand

New 17 May 2021 Asked by eeeee-eeeeeeee 41 Comments

It was my birthday two days ago. Can I ask for some trivia about either Stormtide Leviathan or Talrand Sky Summoner, my first two rare cards?

Magic 2013 made a cycle of monocolor legendary creatures. Each was designed to illustrate a strength of that color. Blue’s legendary creature demonstrated that blue is #1 at spells.Happy Belated Birthday!

Yeva's Design Insights

New 22 Sep 2020 Asked by darklordofsyth 29 Comments

Tis my annual day of b-day asking.. what you can tell us about the design of Yeva, nature's herald my favorite elf commander ?

Yeva was part of a rare monocolored legendary creature cycle in a Magic 2013. I believe those were the first legendary creatures to appear in a core set. Happy Birthday!

Core Set Legends Correction

New 29 Jun 2020 Asked by elvish-mysticcc 37 Comments

Not to nitpick, but you say in today's article that no core set from Alpha through Magic 2014 had any legendary creatures, but Tenth Edition had 10 reprinted ones and Magic 2013 had a whole cycle (that notably introduced fan-favorite characters Odric and Krenko). Very informative article on the whole though!

Oops. My mistake.

Bolas Theme Variance

What's the difference in approach between M13 being Bolas themed and M19 being Bolas themed?

The difference is 6. : )

Planeswalkers Count

New 06 Mar 2016 Asked by bassimelwakil 18 Comments

Original Zendikar block had six planeswalkers: Zendikar had Sorin, Chandra, and Nissa. World wake had Jace. And Rise of the Eldrazi had Gideon and Sarkhan. Magic 2013 and 2015 also had six. Every other block and core set has had five.

Good point.

Innistrad Speculations

New 01 Nov 2015 Asked by taltharmagic 41 Comments

I would love it if that feather was one of Avacyn's because of Tibalt becoming extremely powerful and taking over the plane! I have a feeling it has something more to do with Liliana or some other villain however. Thank you for returning to this set. I started just before RTR was released so I made my starting decks out of packs of Innistrad and Magic 2013. Perhaps we can see a return of Odric?!

We’ll have to wait and see. : )

Three-Color Card Design

New 27 Jun 2015 Asked by griefermadness 22 Comments

Nowadays we see a handful of two color cards in most sets. Are three color cards still exclusive to three color sets, or is it possible to do single cards where appropriate, like Doran from Lorwyn or Nicol Bolas from Magic 2013?

We can do them if they’re appropriate.

Dragon AS-FAN Trivia

New 06 Jan 2015 Asked by stillanotherquestionmark 92 Comments

Some AS-FAN trivia for you! Fate Reforged has an AS-FAN of 0.666 Dragon creature cards, meaning on average, 2 of every 3 Fate Reforged boosters have a Dragon. The previous high as best I can find is a tie between Magic 2013 and Magic 2014 at 0.174, or just a little better than 1-in-6. Scourge, the previous "dragon set" had an AS-FAN of only 0.091 (1-in-11)! For reference, Avacyn Restored has an Angel AS-FAN of .448, or just a little worse than 1-in-2.

FYI.

Marketing Planeswalkers

New 03 Sep 2014 Asked by lerson-blog 121 Comments

Hey, quick question. Jace has been the main planeswalker in terms of marketing for quite some time now, but I'm curious how that's going to change with the removal of core sets. In general, won't it be harder to have a 'poster boy' without shoe-horning him into every block plotwise?

Jace has not been the poster boy for any set in years but Return to Ravnica. Khans block is Sarkhan.
Theros block was Elspeth.
Innistrad block was Liliana.
Magic 2015 was Garruk.
Magic 2014 was Chandra.
Magic 2013 was Nicol Bolas.

Addressing Common Redundancy

New 25 Sep 2013 Asked by tsumiband-blog 1 Comments

"We did not know what the Theros card would be when Magic 2013 was being done. Heck, we didn’t know what it was going to be when the art of Theros was being done." So wait, how do you make sure there aren't too many redundant common effects in a given Standard season at one time? And even if the m13 team didn't know, wouldn't the Theros team notice there's a spell that does what their spell does? Just for the record I'm not like *mad* just curious. I *like* two-mana Instant burn spells.

In design & development, we can change the present and the future but not the past. Once something is printed (or past the point where changes can be made) we have to live with it and design/develop around it.

Rings Return Possibility

New 29 May 2013 Asked by humanpygmysasquatch 9 Comments

Is there much chance of the Rings from M13 returning in the future?

There’s definitely a chance.

Garruk's Appearance

New 28 Apr 2013 Asked by latsblaster 22 Comments

Garruk, an "beefy" planeswalker? In Magic 2012/Magic 2013 he looked like an unhealthy roid-builder, ready for a deadly heart attack. More realistic muscles in MtG!

Remember, this is fantasy and he’s also eight feet tall.

Feedback on Hexproof

New 02 Jan 2013 Asked by latsblaster 11 Comments

With Magic 2012 and Innistrad-block, Hexproof became a common ability. WIth Magic 2013 and Return to Ravnica, hexproof stepped back. Did you get negative response concerning Hexproof? Noone I know really likes it.

The scaling back is in response to the public outcry. Believe it or not, we do actually listen to what our players say. : )

Set Success Comparison

New 30 Aug 2012 Asked by drsylvan 0 Comments

I was surprised State of Design 2012 made virtually no mention of Dark Ascension or Magic 2013. The interesting points to me would be: why was Dark Ascension so much less successful than Mirrodin Besieged? And: What's the overlap between Innistrad and M13 Limited that makes both so good?

I just ran out of space. Dark Ascension wasn’t less successful than Mirrodin Besieged. Both Innistrad and Magic 2013 had excellent design and development. That’s usually the key.

Chandra's Return

New 24 Aug 2012 Asked by litalia-blog 6 Comments

When's Chandra coming back? (yes I now she was just in m13, but still... I need her!)

Oh, don’t worry. We can’t keep Chandra away for long.

Multiverse Comments Insight

New 14 Aug 2012 Asked by aurawarrior 1 Comments

RE: "Multiverse dumps" and my last question. I do indeed mean the developer comments for cards from the Multiverse. I may have just missed the ones for the INN block/M13 then, I'll have a look around on the Wizards site. It'd also be very interesting to see them for older sets though, assuming the comment files still exist.

Dev comments, as we call them, are usually saved for “Latest Developments”, the development column on Fridays.

Multiverse Dumps Inquiry

New 09 Aug 2012 Asked by aurawarrior 0 Comments

Any chance we could see "multiverse dumps" for some of the newer sets (INN block, M13)? I find them extremely interesting.

I’m not sure what that means. We often show developer comments (what we call the space to leave comments in multiverse for design & development - yeah, I don’t know why the name disses designers).

Feedback Implementation Timing

New 10 Jul 2012 Asked by wuyley 3 Comments

How much of m13 feedback can you use on m14? Is it too late for the next core set once the current years set is released?

It’s late but not too late.

Missing Lucky Charms

New 03 Jul 2012 Asked by jtreat 6 Comments

That's a good question: Where are the lucky charms? Or more importantly, we'd love to hear the design/dev logic that allowed them to be omitted from Magic 2013.

Magic is at its best when it keeps changing and evolving. Part of that is to occasionally let things that have been around for ever have vacation so Magic can exist for a while without it.
