Special Sheet Legality

New 12 Oct 2023 Asked by fencerkid 32 Comments

So I adored the time spiral bonus sheet adding cards into that standard environment (and therefore other formats, like Lord of Atlantis). How likely can we get a special sheet and have the cards legal in the format again?

Unlikely, as we like to use the bonus sheet to get desired reprints into the set. A required Standard legality would significantly limit our reprint options.

Merfolk Tribe Trivia

New 30 Dec 2021 Asked by firtleturtle 30 Comments

Hello Mark! Today is my birthday, I was wondering if I could get any trivia about merfolk, my favorite tribe. Thank you!

For the first full year of Magic, the only Merfolk was a vanilla 1/1, Merfolk of the Pearl Trident. (Lord of Atlantis wouldn’t be changed to a Merfolk for many years.) It wasn’t until Fallen Empires, that the game had enough Merfolk to even make a Merfolk deck. For more on the history of Merfolk, here’s my article from Merfolk Week all the way back in 2008: https://magic.wizards.com/en/articles/archive/making-magic/merfolks-tale-2008-06-23Happy Birthday!

Birthday Merfolk Trivia

Could I get some merfolk trivia for my birthday?

The first Merfolk lord (Lord of Atlantis, in Alpha) boosted only one creature (Merfolk of the Pearl Trident). Happy Birthday!

Trivia on Creature Types

New 30 Apr 2021 Asked by gramplot 46 Comments

Hey Mark, it's my birthday! Can I please have some trivia about creature types? Anything you find intresting.Thank you and have a great day!

When Magic first started creatures only had one creature type (and artifact creatures didn’t get any), but there were three exceptions. Birds of Paradise was Mana Birds, Goblin King was Goblin King and Lord of Atlantis was Lord of Atlantis. Will-O’-The-Wisp was Will-O’-The-Wisp, but it was hyphenated, so technically one word. Happy Birthday!

Tribal Lord Design

New 15 Oct 2019 Asked by dunharrow-le-dingue 57 Comments

When you make a tribal lord, commander players want it to be legendary and constructed players want it to be non-legendary. However, you have established that tribal lords that do not scale well in effect (Kumena) fit Legendary well whereas lords that scale well (Lord of Atlantis) are not particularly interesting Commanders. Obviously, there are cases where there is significant overlap, like Ayula, but Ayula being legendary let you push the power level higher. So it Legendary really an issue?

If every time I printed a stackable tribal lord that wasn’t legendary, if players would stop yelling at me, that would be great. : )

Goblin vs. Merfolk Lords

New 19 Nov 2018 Asked by andromeda-mini 51 Comments

Mark, what would be reasoning behind Merfolk having 2cmc tribal lords granting +1/+1 while Goblins wouldn't? It's a bit bizarre that the most aggressive colour falls behind a tribe in the most reactive colour, isn't it?

Those exist because of a card from Alpha - Lord of Atlantis. Early Magic was more individual card based and Richard made it as a top down. It was of a high power level mostly by accident as mana costs, especially on creatures, wasn’t well understood early on.
Master of the Pearl Trident was basically a reprint with a different name because we didn’t want to reference real world mythology with “Atlantis” as Earth isn’t part of the multiverse.

Merfolk Reprint Request

New 19 Feb 2018 Asked by firtleturtle 18 Comments

It obviously can’t be printed in a standard legal set, but us Merfolk players are dying for a modern border reprint of Lord of Atlantis. Maybe in a supplemental set?

It would have to be in a supplemental set for numerous reasons.

Lord of Atlantis Trivia

Mark, yesterday was my birthday (was out and couldn't get to the PC to send you this). Do you have any trivia on Lord of Atlantis, my favorite card?

In Alpha, Lord of Atlantis was not himself a Merfolk even though he clearly is one in the art. He became a Merfolk in the great Creature Update and his text was changed too boost “other Merfolk”. Happy Birthday!

2CMC Lords Clarification

New 03 Jul 2016 Asked by fearthemongoose-blog 33 Comments

Will other tribes get 2CMC lords? "Alpha is not the best set for precedent when it comes to mana costs" Master of the Pearl Trident was in M13, you didn't really answer the question.

Master of the Pearl Trident was just a cleaned up Lord of Atlantis. If the latter didn’t exist, the former would not have. It’s the case of something getting grandfathered in from early Magic that is not something we plan on necessarily doing more of. Aka I *did* answer the question.

Can I get some merfolk trivia for my birthday? :)

When Magic premiered there was only one merfolk in it Mergolk of the Pearl Trident. There was a merfolk lord, Lord of Atlantis, but it wasn’t at the time a merfolk. It has since gotten errata. Happy Birthday!

Iconic Evolutions

New 03 Dec 2014 Asked by vereendood 77 Comments

As an older player, what evokes Magic are great arts like Serra Angel, Shivan Dragon, Lord of Atlantis, Nightmare or Birds of paradise. Do you have data on what constitutes "Magic iconic" for new players? The Planeswalkers I guess?

Okay Question Marks (especially “newer” players). Answer up.

Merfolk Trivia

I'm currently out for my girlfriend's birthday (and asking Tumblr questions about Magic, such an exciting life I lead), could I get some trivia about Merfolk for her?

The very first merfolk deck had a lord (The Lord of Atlantis) and one merfolk (the Merfolk of the Pearl Trident). The second merfolk wouldn’t show up for four more expansions (Merfolk Assassin in The Dark).

Duplicate Merfolk Cards

New 27 Apr 2014 Asked by zanmor 29 Comments

Was just searching cards for a merfolk deck and wondered why you'd make Master of the Pearl Trident when Lord of Atlantis already exists? Flavor/setting?

In early Magic we made reference to real world mythological places such as Atlantis. We don’t do that any more. Our story has our own places.

Secret Lair Mechanics

New 23 Feb 2013 Asked by dukkhasatva 3 Comments

But with Secret Lair out, isn't an old Lord of Atlantis a creature type lord?

Yes. If you have R&D Secret Lair out, you can have creature types that are no longer supported if they are on cards in play because the Lair will put them back in.

Creature Boosting Logic

New 24 Nov 2012 Asked by stanforditch-blog 14 Comments

Why did cards like Lord of Atlantis and Goblin King initially boost all the relevant creatures on the board? Surely a Lord should be played with the intention of only affecting your own creatures?

Flavor. All goblins get riled up when they see the King.

Mistform Ultimus Traits

New 23 Aug 2012 Asked by dkirzane 5 Comments

The flavor of Mistform Ultimus seems to be that it's whatever you're looking for - so Zombie Master, Lord of Atlantis, and Goblin King all see in it an ally. So, even though it's not reflected on the new Mistform Ultimus update, is this legendary illusion also a chicken (a la Chicken a la King) and a donkey (a la Assquatch)?

He is when you are playing with silver-bordered cards, but in black-bordered world, silver-border only creature types are not supported.

Merfolk in Sets

New 02 Jul 2012 Asked by edricthemoonman-blog 6 Comments

I feel like Master of the Pearl Trident is out of place...if I were a new player, I'd be really disappointed when I found out that there are only 4 Merfolk in the set. Was this strictly printed for older formats? I'm just really curious, being a Fish fan, if this is y'all catering to Legacy or planting a seed for the future.

Alpha had just one merfolk for its Lord of Atlantis.

Powerful Blue Lords

New 28 Jun 2012 Asked by mammonazrael 9 Comments

"Costing CC doesn’t mean you have the most powerful lords." I feel like this answer completely missed the point of the question. The fact is that blue does have the most powerful lords. Despite being the weakest creature color, why does blue get a very powerful lord in MotPT? Isn't Lord of Atlantis too powerful to reprint already?

You’re missing what I’m saying. I’ve talked with development - the people whose job it is to understand power levels. They are saying that Master of the Pearl Trident is not the most powerful lord. In fact, they believe it is one of the weaker ones in Magic 2013.

Merfolk Card Strategy

New 28 Jun 2012 Asked by troacctid 6 Comments

Why make Master of the Pearl Trident instead of just reprinting Lord of Atlantis proper? Is it an attempt to make the Merfolk deck more powerful in Legacy by giving them 8 copies?

In modern design, the lords only affect your creatures of the specific creature type not all creatures of that type.

Blue's Creature Controversy

New 28 Jun 2012 Asked by ricardolongo 5 Comments

Recently, there have been discussions that R&D doesn't really take blue's weakness as worst creature color seriously (thanks to Delver and Snapcaster). Now blue gets a new Lord of Atlantis... when white's excuse for a two-mana lord was the strictly worse Wizened Cenn. And white's supposed to be the best at pumping its team. Somehow I'm not happy about this.

Creatures are at the heart of the game. Blue is allowed to have creatures that are playable. They’re supposed to though play into how blue plays. Note how blue’s two best creatures right now, Snapcaster Mage and Delver of Secrets both require a strong dedication to instants and sorceries, the area where blue is supposed to shine.
