Generous Gift

Token Color Choice

Why is the token that Generous Gift makes a green elephant instead of a white elephant?

It’s a color shifted card (same card, new color), so it kept the rules text the same.

Generous Gift Question

Is Generous Gift a break for being able to hit lands? Can white currently single target remove a land?

It’s not supposed to.

White's Untapping Ability

New 22 Feb 2023 Asked by mrmoustachemm 28 Comments

"Untapping lands isn’t a white ability." No? That feels like something that White should be able to do: "I countered your spell, but at least you get your mana back." Similar to Generous Gift giving the opponent something for killing their creature. Makes it feel different from a blue counterspell.

White has to give it something that it does. White makes token creatures, so granting a creature token is in pie for white.

Generous Gift's Green Elephant

New 17 Feb 2022 Asked by hiygamer 53 Comments

Is there a reason why Generous Gift makes a green elephant and not a white one?

I think the designers were tickled that it was a complete color shift, so they left the rules text exactly the same.

It’s a bend.

We can call it a strong bend.

White's Place in Removal

New 14 May 2021 Asked by highlysynergistic 31 Comments

I remember seeing the other day that white specialized in mass removal. I would like to offer a counter argument leading to what I believe the color pie is saying. So part of whites color pie is having massive amounts of creatures and generally not focusing on one single creature. Well because white doesn't like individualism then single targeted removal with a slight downside would work right? Flavor wise anyway. Which is why path to exile, swords to plow share and generous gift all actually fit white. White likes tokens so the elephant token is more fitting. White does life gain so that is fitting. White also does catch up stuff so path to exile works.
I guess my question is, with these points how is white not the single best single creature removal?

Cause black really, really enjoys killing things. Gamewise, you don’t want the same color to be best at both spot removal and mass removal.

Does the existence Generous Gift mean targeted land destruction is in white's slice of the color pie now?

No.

Blue's Transformation Ability

Could Beast Within/Generous Gift be in blue? It technically fills blue's ability to destroy something and give the controller a creature in place of it

Blue can transform creatures into other creatures.

White Card Additions in Commander

New 01 Dec 2020 Asked by nav566 64 Comments

After reading your Odds & Ends, I just want to say white got some overwhelming help over the past few years, from the point of view of a commander player. Generous Gift, Smothering Tithe, Dawn of Hope, Cartographer's Hawk, Keeper of the Accord Mangara the Diplomat and Luminous Broodmoth all Scoured new grounds for white in commander, and I personaly feel the effect a lot. So thank you for those.

You’re welcome.

Generous Gift Exception

New 17 Jan 2020 Asked by presidentark 27 Comments

"No, white doesn’t get “destroy target land”." White got a colorshifted Beast Within in Modern Horizons, Generous Gift, which is single-target land destruction.

That was a bend for that very reason. It was a color-shifter card that very rarely gets used for land destruction, so the Council of Colors allowed the bend for that particular card.

It’s a bend. It’s a break in green though.

Elephant Tokens Count

New 22 Dec 2019 Asked by dalenthas 40 Comments

You recently said that elephants appear more in green than white, so I did some checking. According to Scryfall, there are 24 Green Elephants, 28 White Elephants, and 2 that are both green and white. Of the white Elephants, two are silver bordered, and 6 aren't Loxodons. There are also 10 green cards that make Elephant tokens, Generous Gift being the only white card to make one.

I was talking about Elephant tokens. There are twelve cards that make Elephant tokens, all of which are green Elephants. Ten of the cards are green, one is blue and one is Generous Gift, a white card.

Generous Gift's Elephant

New 22 Dec 2019 Asked by senthemink 56 Comments

Why is it that Generous gift gives your opponent a Green elephant instead of a White one? Elephants exist in white, (albeit in the form of loxodon), so it seems to me to be a flavor fail.

1) Elephants appear far more in green.2) We have to watch how many unique tokens we make in any one set.3) It was a colorshufted card and the fact the text was identical was seen as a feature, not a bug.EDIT: SKIP #3, IT WAS A BEAST.

Mono-White Destruction Limits

New 18 Oct 2019 Asked by leiniltuan-blog 37 Comments

Hi! What you mean by " 'Destroy target permanent' isn’t monowhite." is that other colors can do it without a disadvantage, right? Monowhite can do it, but needs some compensation, as in Generous Gift. Did I understand correctly? Thanks for your time

We do not print “Destroy target permanent” as the only three words of rules text on a monowhite card.

Food Token Clarification

New 27 Sep 2019 Asked by cwnate 30 Comments

Bake into a pie says "create a food token", yet in monday article you said the idea behind the card was "destroying the creature and giving its controller a Food token". Similar cards like Beast Withing or Generous Gift actually say " Its controller creates" so, is this an error on the article or an error on the templating of the card?

That’s just me using vernacular and not getting into template speak.

Blue Creature Destruction

New 14 Sep 2019 Asked by thegoblinguy 43 Comments

Hi Mark, you recently said that blue can destroy creatures through transforming them, so why isn’t Generous Gift a blue card?

Blue’s part of the pie lets it turn a creature into another creature. That’s not what Generous Gift does.

Generous Gift Query

New 08 Aug 2019 Asked by thegreatmill 35 Comments

Why doesn't Generous Gift make a white elephant? I feel it would much that much funnier as a spin on the old story and I get frustrated every time I look at the card because it's green and not this thing.

We make tokens the color that that creature type appears in most often. In silver border, where we play up humor more, it would have been white.

Card Selection Criteria

New 08 Aug 2019 Asked by dornith2 46 Comments

Earlier you said if there's a choice between two similar cards, you choose the one that's in color pie. So why does the Naya Populate deck have Beast Within instead of Generous Gift? They're identical cards, both in-color for the deck, and the later was specifically made because the former was out of pie.

I said we “usually”. There are exceptions.

Elephant Token Color

We tend to minimize tokens and Elephants tokens are usually green.
