Emrakul Design Discussion

New 01 Feb 2024 Asked by sarroth 22 Comments

During Eldritch Moon design, was there ever any discussion of having Emrakul have a 5-color emerge cost to have a 5-color identity for Commander?

Not that I remember.

Squirming Emergence Logic

New 22 Nov 2023 Asked by kreetn 34 Comments

Do you have any design insight as to why squirming emergence can’t return a land to the battlefield?

Many players misunderstand the mana value of a land, so since the functionality of returning a land is low, we remove it as an option to avoid the confusion.

Squirming Emergence Mechanic

New 30 Oct 2023 Asked by suggested-name-nick 25 Comments

Why can't Squirming Emergence hit lands?

It’s either a play design concern or an avoiding confusion issue, as many players have trouble understanding how mana values interact with lands.

Universes Beyond Cards

New 08 Jun 2023 Asked by lizardwizard100 75 Comments

Hey Mark, I wanted to follow up on a question I asked a while back regarding the decision to make Universes Beyond cards eternal-legal. You responded with your “buffet” analogy, essentially explaining that it’s important for players to be able to pick and choose which parts of Magic they want to interact with. However, I feel that this buffet analogy, while logical, is flawed — particularly in regards to casual play. When I sit down to play a game of commander, (continuing with food metaphors) I am no longer eating by myself, rather, each player has brought their favorite food item from the buffet and then each item is mixed together in a bowl. As you can imagine, this can result in some pretty gross substances (fish and ice cream, anyone?). However, if each player brings a food item of the same type (fruit, pasta, meat, etc) then the resulting stew is just… better. To this point, one could argue “well, just find other people with the same type of food as you”, and I believe herein lies the flaw. The polarizing effect of these radical departures from the game’s 30 year history of world-building and character development may very well result in the “Gathering” of MTG becoming the “Gatherings”. I do understand that Universes Beyond provides the opportunity for attracting new players — when a non-MTG player sees their favorite character from their favorite IP on a card, how could they not be curious? However, I am much more concerned about the consequences this will have on the existing player base — the ones who fell in love with Magic because it was Magic, not Warhammer, or Lord of the Rings, or Doctor Who. Looking towards the future, as more and more UB cards are printed and begin showing up more and more often on the commander table, there will no doubt come a point in which UB cards will have to be added to the “rule zero” discussion. And that just feels bad. It feels bad for me, because it adds an extra layer of difficulty to finding people to play with who have non-UB deck lists, and it feels bad to the UB-player, because they feel excluded. Perhaps once these bad feelings become widespread enough, a new format will emerge, “non-UB Commander”. Only time will tell. Anyways, thank you so much for all you do for the game (especially listening to criticism like this!!)

Your question presupposes that not wanting to mix Magic and non-Magic IP is the preferred opinion of players. That’s not what our market research shows. That group, while very vocal online, is actually a small minority. The biggest driving factor of what cards players want to include in their deck is what they think will be fun to play (which also works with the rest of their deck). Basically, game play is a significantly larger factor for card inclusion than flavor. But if it’s a big factor for you, then yes, find a play group that shares your sensibilities, so that you all can play Magic in the form that you most enjoy. Magic’s customizability is one of its biggest strengths.

Inorganic Content Impact

New 02 Jan 2023 Asked by ak-47osu 38 Comments

"inorganic content" is the feeling that a format has been warped because of R and D decisions to inject change directly into the format. E.g. powerful cards in Modern Masters, Commander sets, Alchemy, etc. It can feel forced. Its a finicky concept because ultimately all changes come from R and D. But people sometimes like the vibe better when these changes emerge from standard-focused sets

It is exceedingly difficult to make cards relevant in competitive larger formats at the power level of a Standard card.

Emerge Mechanic Rating

New 16 Dec 2022 Asked by barrinmw 36 Comments

I was wondering where Emerge is on the Storm scale? We only got to see it on 10 cards and self-sacrifice outside of aristocrats is really fun.

I’d call Emerge a 6. It needs the right set, but it was generally liked, has plenty of design space, and played well.

Emerge for Phyrexians?

New 01 Sep 2022 Asked by musings-of-nesariel 30 Comments

Hey, Mark. Long time reader, first time Question. Was Emerge ever considered as an ability for Phyrexian sleeper agents? It just seems like a good fit for the "unknown until it's too late" feel.

I don’t believe it was.

Squee's Immortal Nature

New 08 Aug 2022 Asked by charble 84 Comments

I have a question about Squee's inability to die. Did it first emerge from gameplay and then into the story, or from the story into his first card (Squee, Goblin Nabob)? Was it something that was planned for his character from the start?

I guess it’s my fault. When I designed the original card for Squee, his ability to return from the graveyard wasn’t meant to represent he was being reincarnated, just that he was lucky and hard to kill. That card later inspired an author to build his immortality into the character.

Genju Style Land Enchantments

New 17 Feb 2022 Asked by pantswithoutlegholes 27 Comments

i like kamigawa neon dynasty just like everybody else, but i find some decisions curious, and none more than the choice to include genju style land enchantments (crackling emergence and harmonious emergence) but not call them genju. i feel like the connection is easy to miss with the different names. was there a practical reason for this?

The playtest names included Genju. My guess is that they were concepted in a way where the word Genju didn’t make sense.

Mutate in Modified Action

New 30 Jan 2022 Asked by audio-mage 52 Comments

Any chance mutate gets in on that modified action? If keywords, rules text, etc are trending toward more easily comprehensible at face value, it makes sense to allow keywords like modified to be inclusive to mutate, which could use the support.

Why don’t we just include every old mechanic that flavorfully could make sense with modified? We could include mutate. And threshold. And amplify. And exalted. And augment. And embalm. And haunt. And emerge. And transform. And soulbond. And hellbent. That’s the problem. The game’s almost thirty years old. We’ve made a lot of mechanics. If every new mechanic tried to include every old mechanic that possibly could apply, we couldn’t fit the reminder text on the card (and it starts getting a lot more complicated). What we do is pick the most common and available mechanics (ideally ones in the set) and count those. Every aura, equipment or card that adds counters to creatures is a lot of backward compatibility.

Neon Dynasty: Is it Magic?

New 12 Jan 2022 Asked by abelzumi 139 Comments

Hi, Maro. I'd like to express concern with Neon Dynasty and Magic feel. When the image of the DJ table was released, there's been a lot of discussion about what "feels like" and "doesn't feel like" Magic/fantasy. The (heavily paraphrased) argument that I see from you is that there are already sci-fi and humoristic elements in the game, and that extending those elements isn't doing anything necessarily new. I feel that that's a disingenuous take. Steampunk tropes on Kaladesh have a nuanced fantasy feeling that's premodern and/or modern-divergent. Urza-era "mech suits" emerge naturally from metallurgic constructs and fantastic artificing. The nuance between that and cyberpunk/scifi is frustrating to articulate, but I believe that the public response of "X elements already exist, why is Y different" erases that nuance and the displeasure that comes with it.I personally feel that, instead of understanding that cyberpunk-DJ-techno elements may feel antithetical to the player base's connection to Magic's established fantasy, your responses have been dismissive and equating Neon Dynasty's aesthetic to parts of the game that have completely different origins and feelings. The same can be said around Un-sets sometimes. Humor on Magic cards (Spire Barrage comes to mind) is common, yes, but Un-sets are by nature a parody. Equating Un-humor to premier-set Magic humor feels like playing a Weird Al song in place of the original and claiming that the listeners are wrong for pointing out the differences.I hope that none of this comes off combative, but I do feel frustrated, and I know that there's no harm intended in how you present your work here on Tumblr. Thank you.

Thank you for taking the time to write a nuanced reply, so it seems only appropriate that I do so in return. I understand that you have a line you draw of what “feels like Magic” to you. I believe each Magic player, whether they’re able to verbalize it as well as you, also has a line. Here’s the tricky part. That line is different for every player, and often, pretty radically different. There’s no unified line that R&D can hold to.This means our philosophy isn’t about holding to a line (as it’s essentially an impossible task), but rather leaning into what makes a trading card game so special - the ability to enable the consumer to customize their own experience. This means we want to offer up a wide variety of different options, so that every player can find what makes Magic special for them and enable them to make Magic the game they want it to be.If a particular player doesn’t like a certain type of effect or a certain type of creative or a certain type of humor, they have the ability to opt out of using those cards, either by their choice of format, of deck and/or of opponents. My article next Monday tackles this topic in a bit more detail and is going to offer up my favorite new metaphor about what designing Magic is like.

Emerge on Non-Eldrazi Creatures

New 26 Nov 2021 Asked by definitely-not-a-squirrel-blog 44 Comments

Does Emerge have to necessarily be tied to eldrazi, or could we see it on non-Eldrazi creatures?

We could use it in a set without Eldrazi. It would have to have other flavor that made sense though.

Role of Non-Planeswalkers

New 05 Jun 2021 Asked by sententiamaxim 39 Comments

In your podcast with Doug Beyer on "War of the Spark," it focused on planeswalkers, but I'm wondering how non-planeswalkers like Niv-Mizzet factored into the design or story? How important was Niv in development, especially considering his popularity? Did his 5-color avatar version emerge as a side note or afterthought? Or did it develop in tandem with the larger storyline?

The legendary creatures were more handled card by card in set design.

New Mechanic Assurance

New 27 Jul 2019 Asked by strangerside-blog 69 Comments

I'm prematurely wary about the mechanic on the Goldilocks card being a rehash of some kind. Without giving anything away, can you reassure me this mechanic can do something monstrous, adapt, flip, transform, kicker, level up, offering, champion, emerge, or heroic couldn't possibly do?

If you’re worried that a new mechanic might play in space that an old mechanic already does, I have bad news for you. You’re playing the wrong game. The nature of a trading card game, especially one as old as Magic, is that new mechanics will share elements with old ones.

Ravnica Story Threads

New 13 Apr 2019 Asked by nerdyhologrampizza 36 Comments

Story question: the GRN/RNA stories didn’t address the story spotlight cards in their respective sets. When will we see those threads tied together? A WAR story? When is that? Or is Greg’s story that? I need to understand what the Firemind’s Research was or what the Emergency Powers were.

There are a series of stories coming out that cover all Guilds of Ravnica & Ravnica Allegiance.
