Hybrid Card Correction

"Also, hybrid’s first appearance was in original Ravnica block." Dovescape is from Dissension.

Oops. Dovescape bended more in white than we should have.

Hybrid Design Philosophy

New 18 Jul 2023 Asked by apo08 40 Comments

"Hybrid effects need to exist in the overlap space between two colors (aka they both can do it as a monocolored card), not the space in between two colors."It totally makes sense. But, is it something decided after the first appearance of hybrid? Say, is Dovescape something that white can do on its own? Is it because there is compensation and it's a bend because of the countering?

Shadowmoor pushed a little too hard on the as-fan of hybrid and designed a handful of cards that pushed more into bend space than it should have. Also, hybrid’s first appearance was in original Ravnica block.

Recalling Old Cards

How do you remember details about really old cards you've designed? Does R&D write this stuff down or something? They must. You can't really remember what the reasoning behind, say... Dovescape was. Can you?

I remember some but far from all.

Dovescape Design Trivia

New 19 Feb 2015 Asked by bwinkel 28 Comments

Today's my birthday! Any trivia on my favorite quirky card, Dovescape?

I designed Dovescape as a monowhite card, but we were looking for hybrid effects and we’d never done this one before so we were like “I guess this could be Blue too.”Happy Birthday!

Dovescape and Workshop

New 23 Dec 2014 Asked by yaykaldare 33 Comments

Does the presence of a Dovescape allow the mana generated from Mishra's Toy Workshop to be spent on any noncreature spell? Also, my friend wants to know if Pez dispensers count as toys.

Absolutely and absolutely.

Bird Flocking Mechanics

New 26 Dec 2013 Asked by im1crazycat 5 Comments

As for the iconic bird mechanic.... Eyes in the skys, squadran hawk, call, battle screech, dovescape, fable of wolf and own, flurry of wings, emeria angel, Jötun Owl Keeper, Ordered Migration, Pride of the clouds, scion of vitu-ghazi all either come in multiples, or set you up to put out multiples. Birds in magic FLOCK. And I think they have some interesting mechanics to make that happen. I'm a big fan of squadron hawk and beck // call, anything similar down the pike.

Flocks are bird related and yes we do a lot of “numerous birds” mechanical nods. To me that means more than just you can get more out of your deck.

Dovescape's Creation

New 23 Jun 2013 Asked by timebender13 17 Comments

Did you design the card Dovescape? Because I immediately thought of you when I saw it. Who else would make a card where suddenly everything is birds?

I did. Was my love of tokens showing? : )

Misunderstanding NWO

New 10 May 2012 Asked by strymon 0 Comments

I feel that most people are taking the NWO thing out of proportion for fear they won't see their favorite cards anymore. Context might be useful. With RTR around the corner, could you maybe name a couple cards from Ravnica we'd be unlikely to see? For example some of my favorite designs from the set included Gelectrode, Dovescape, Phytohydra, Mindleech Mass, Vulturous Zombie, and Searing Meditation. Could I expect to ever see designs like those again?

Something important to remember. New World Order is about limiting certain kinds of complexity at common. We still put plenty of strategic complexity at common (the complexity is in how best to use it not understanding or tracking what it does) and all kinds of complexity at higher rarities.
