Deathrite Shaman

Old Frame Hybrid Explanation

New 18 May 2024 Asked by rexosaurus 37 Comments

Why does Lavinia, Foil to Conspiracy have a gold ‘97 frame instead of a hybrid ‘97 frame like Deathrite Shaman?

Hybrid didn’t exist at the time of the old frame, so there is debate of what old frame are we supposed to use. Lavinia, Foil to Conspiracy takes a old fashioned sensibility choosing a frame that existed at the time that would have been the most likely frame that would have been used if hybrid existed. Remember in ‘97, all multicolor cards had the same gold frame without any pinlines or hints at what the colors of the card were.Deathrite Shaman applies a modern sensibility choosing to make a new frame that mimics what a modern hybrid frame would look like as an old frame. It comes down to what is the purpose of the old style frames, to capture how it would have been done at the time or mimic what we do now, but with an older aesthetic. Different players want different things.

Card Frame Preferences

New 21 Feb 2024 Asked by retchgorger 42 Comments

Hey Mark! I want to say I am a huge fan of retro/old frames, I really think it makes cards pop a lot more. Blue decks look and feel blue, black decks look and feel black etc. It is my favorite frame. However, I am not a fan of the old multicolor (or gold) frame, two-color cards all just blend in and lose identity. So I really liked how old frame Deathrite Shaman was done in Ravnica Remastered :D

Deathrite Shaman is a hybrid card and not a gold card. Fun fact: I, and a few other R&D members, tried to change the multicolor frame from gold to the frame now used on hybrid (we liked how it showed colors more clearly on two-color cards). We failed, but mock-ups were made. So when I made hybrid, I pitched using those frames.

Hybrid Mana Effects

New 11 Oct 2023 Asked by kaishi101 37 Comments

Does a card/effect with hybrid mana in its cost have access to both of those colors in its effects? if no, would you consider DRS a pie break?

A card with one type of hybrid mana should be something each monocolor can do. Deathrite Shaman is a little bit of a bend, but not a break in either color.

Black/Green Hybrid Risk

New 07 Aug 2019 Asked by gophilipbowles 48 Comments

"We have made broken cards in all the colors. Our most recent mistake is black/green hybrid." Both of the only two hybrid cards perceived to have caused problems (Deathrite Shaman having been banned) have been black/green. Is this just a consequence of small sample size or might this specific combination be risky (either intrinsically or because popularity prompts you to push it)?

It’s because black/green hybrid tends to play in graveyard mechanical space that’s a little more dangerous.

Hybrid Commander Complexity

New 27 Jul 2019 Asked by yamisquall 46 Comments

Hi Mark! About this discussion of hybrid (again) in Commander, I just want to point out to people that in one of the last Command Zone podcast, several cases were made that would increase confusion: Hybrid cards but with non-hybrid color activation (Deathrite Shaman) would make "hybrid is allowed but not this"; and Twobrid cards would also mean "can be in any deck" even though cards like "Beseech the Queen" are clearly colored mechanically.

“The current rule is confusing up front, but the change would create these infrequent corner-case confusions” is not the strongest of arguments. : )

Deathrite Shaman Origin

New 09 Sep 2018 Asked by 43percentemo 42 Comments

I noticed in your article about notable past Ravnica cards, in the portion about Deathrite Shaman, you mentioned that planeswalkers didn't exist yet when it was being designed. Was Deathrite Shaman originally designed for the first Ravnica block? Any other neat trivia about it?

I just misremembered what set it was from. I worked on both original Ravnica and Return to Ravnica. One of the downsides of having done so much design work is sometimes I mix up when something was made.

Deathrite Shaman Correction

In your article today, you said that deathrite Shaman was created before planeswalkers existed. You might want to correct that.

I will.

Reprinting Banned Cards

New 30 May 2016 Asked by tehwerr 27 Comments

Is it possible for you to reprint in standard cards that are unlikely to make a huge splash in the environment but are banned in modern. EG deathrite shaman.

What would be the purpose for doing that?

Mana Planeswalkers Future

New 07 Apr 2016 Asked by notreallygoodatcommingupwithname 52 Comments

In your GDC talk you make it sound like 2 mana Planeswalkers (Tibalt) were a mistake even as an idea, let alone execution. Does this mean that there will be no future 2 mana or even 1 mana (Deathrite Shaman aside) Planeswalkers, not counting flipwalkers of course? Can you put a storm scale on this issue?

We have no current plans of making two-mana single-sided Planeswalkers.

Favorite Cards Birthday

New 19 Aug 2015 Asked by -kyari- 48 Comments

Yesterday was my birthday, and after a year of waiting for my turn to ask a question I forgot to do it yesterday! Anyway, could I have any info on my favorite cards: Vampire Knighthawk or Deathrite Shaman?

Vampire Nighthawk was made to fill a French vanilla slot. Lifelink and Deathtouch aren’t particularly synergistic together but the “life” paired with “death” sounded cool. Happy Birthday!

Did you design Bitterblossom and/or Deathrite Shaman?

Bitterblossom: Yes Deathrite Shaman: I had a hand in its design but was not the sole designer.

1 CMC Planeswalker Potential

New 08 Feb 2015 Asked by stormx 29 Comments

Do you ever think there'll be a 1 cmc planeswalker, or was Deathrite Shaman enough to show that's probably an idea best left undone?

The only reason to do it is hole filling which isn’t a good reason.

Designing 1cmc Planeswalkers

New 14 Jul 2014 Asked by thesalmonflyatdawn 18 Comments

Is there design space in a 1cmc plainswalker? For example it could start with one loyalty and have only +0 abilities which provide extremely incremental advantage, such as a mini deathrite shaman to burn/heal for one etc

You expand to new areas of design because it serves the set not because you’ve never done it before.

Planeswalker vs. Creature

New 13 Jul 2014 Asked by flashywav 17 Comments

I saw a lot of people refer to deathrite shaman in the planeswalker cmc question. Would a planeswalker that cost B/G and have the same abilities as the deathrite shaman would be that risky to make?

Planeswalkers are harder to get rid of than creatures. Also, we currently don’t require mana to use planeswalker abilities. So, no I don’t think we’d do that.

Standard Meta Concerns

New 29 Aug 2013 Asked by jsyscryst 8 Comments

I know you are not a Developer but in current Standard we have Rest in Peace, Deathrite Shaman and Scavenging Ooze. Shouldn't those be able to take care of the 'Goyf? They even do the trick in Legacy.

Having answers is not reason enough to allow an overpowered card to be printed.

RTR Block Observations

New 15 May 2013 Asked by grapeshot 20 Comments

I have to disagree with a lot of what I am reading. I find RTR block to be the single worse block, and the 3 sets each about worse than AVR. You managed to make standard a control and midrange boredom fest, ruined modern through bad reactive bans and deathrite shaman, and largely made legacy feel even more blue. Please stop with these kind of sets.

Lots of different players with a lot of different opinions. Many players are buying and playing Return to Ravnica block for what it’s worth.

Color Pie Integrity

New 31 Jan 2013 Asked by unstablemutant-blog 10 Comments

Deathrite Shaman is a black mana elf, with upside no less. In a mono-black deck (with fetch lands, of course) he's better than any mono-green mana elf, including himself. As keeper of the color pie, how do you feel about that?

You seem to be glossing over the whole “land in the graveyard as cost of the effect” part of the ability. I feel extracting mana out of lands in graveyard (and once per land) is an acceptable stretch in black.
