Perception of Urza Block Ostracization

New 17 May 2022 Asked by rekian 42 Comments

In a recent poll in Twitter listing top 4 sets in MTG history, Urza’s Saga and block as a whole received a spot in a lot of them, almost on pair with Invasion, Innistrad or Ravnica. Nonetheless, it seems WOTC still ostracizes the block. So, so many memorable cards that helped define so many decks: Carpet of Flowers, Sneak Attack, Show and Tell, Gaea’s Cradle, Serra’s Sanctum, Gilded Drake, Yawgmoth’s Will, Grim Monolith, Crop Rotation, Frantic Search, Replenish, Academy Rector, Opalescence, Yawgmoth’s Bargain, Powder Keg, Rofellos… and I could go on and on. I love that beautiful, relaxed, cartoony artwork too. Any love for Urzas Block here?

How exactly do we “ostracize” Urza’s block?

Question about Crop Rotation Color

Could crop rotation be blue? Its transmuting one land into another, and blue can make lands into others

Blue can’t do the fetching part.

Could a crop rotation effect appear in white? Is it philosophically acceptable? Mechanically?

White only fetches for plains and even that it does infrequently.

What are the chances of ever seeing another card like Crop Rotation (Instant speed land tutor)? Would something similar break current color pie rules? Asking for all those that hail the hypnotoad.

Green is allowed to do it. It’s just something we do infrequently.

Was Crop Rotation considered for Battle for Zendikar block? It's a very cool card that could be interesting in Modern

Not a developer, but I believe it is too strong for Standard.

Harrow Trivia

It's my birthday! Could I have some trivia on something you feel like giving trivia on?

Harrow’s original playtest name was Crop Rotation. The creative team changed the name, so I tried the name a second time and that time stuck. Happy Birthday!

Playtest Name Confusion

Has it ever happened that a playtest name for one card ended up as the final name for another, and everybody gets them mixed up?

Harrow’s original name in Tempest design was Crop Rotation and that threw me for years.
