Monocolor Precon Commander Decks

New 28 May 2024 Asked by little-lion-girl 41 Comments

I'd like to note that, aside from the W40K Necron deck, WotC hasn't released a monocolor precon in box stores in ten years with C14. I believe the Angels SL deck sold out quickly. Would another monocolor precon be completely out of the question based on ten year old data? Or was the Necrons deck significant for market research?

We are willing to do monocolor Commander decks, but they’re both harder to do and have a higher bar to clear.

Teferi Trivia

New 14 Mar 2023 Asked by automaticclampeachland-deactiva 30 Comments

Birthday trivia! Can I have some obscure trivia on Teferi?

Teferi first appeared in the Mirage story, but he was a planeswalker and at the time we didn’t make cards for planeswalkers, so we referenced him by name in titles and showed him in art, but he didn’t get a card. Years later we were making the Commander 2014 decks and finally found a slot to make a card for him. Happy Birthday!

Correctness of Character Tokens

FYI Ob Nixilis from C14 makes Demon tokens.

I was correct then.Thanks.

Daretti Design Timeline

Does that mean Daretti was designed for Conspiracy 2 before Commander 2014?

I was thinking if his two cards backwards. Oops.

Teferi Story Planning

When Teferi was given a planeswalker card in Commander 2014, had you already decided to involve him in the new Dominaria story?

Yep.

Commander 2014 Clarification

New 04 Nov 2017 Asked by theuninvitedghost 23 Comments

Sometimes it seems like you enjoy giving short answers that aren't clear and necessitate additional follow-up questions. Anyway... "By printing them on cards." Ok. What is it about the Planeswalkers printed in M14 that make them pre-mending? They seem just like other versions, to me.

I was talking about Commander 2014 and accidentally said Magic 2014.

Planeswalker Edition Mistake

New 03 Nov 2017 Asked by bolas-our-lord-and-savior-deact 21 Comments

When you said magic 2014 had pre mending walkers, you meant commander 2014 right?

Oops. Yes, I meant Commander 2014.

Planeswalker Power Levels

New 23 Jun 2017 Asked by lgosvse 145 Comments

FYI, the Commander 2014 product does say why pre-Mending planeswalkers are at that power level. The planeswalker cards don't depict a planeswalker at their full potential: just the amount that they are willing to help you.

A fine answer.

Serra Card Inquiry

New 20 Mar 2017 Asked by angelicavenger 65 Comments

It was my birthday on Friday. Instead of trivia I would like to ask if we'll ever see a proper Serra card? I was really disappointed when Teferi and Freyalise got planeswalker cards in Commander 2014 but Serra didn't. She seemed like a shoe-in considering every other color got a previously met oldwalker that never had the chance to get a card before.

The reason Serra didn’t get a card in that product was that the decks were mechanically built first and then a proper flavored planeswalker that made sense with that theme was chosen. The white deck was about artifacts so Serra didn’t make sense for it. Also, introducing Nahiri was setting up Shadows over Innistrad.

Commander Characters Role

New 31 Jul 2016 Asked by sigruen 45 Comments

Commander 2014 introduced or reintroduced a number of characters that would go on to play a role in the main magic story. are we likely to see supplementary products used like this again?

Yes.

Characters in Future Storylines

New 22 Mar 2016 Asked by heroin-face-deactivated20220906 44 Comments

Since Commander 2014 introduced or reintroduced us to characters that have since become part of the Magic storyline in a prominent way (Ob Nixilis, Nahiri), is it right to assume that characters introduced or reintroduced in subsequent supplemental products (Kaseto, Meren, Ezuri) will also appear in future storylines?

They might, but there is no promise that they will.

Planeswalker Commanders

New 21 Mar 2016 Asked by kobayashicircle-deactivated2019 60 Comments

Re: Planewalker Commanders; the Commander commitee did indeed try testing planeswalkers as commanders when the card type first debuted and quickly found it to be very degenerate. Development for Commander 2014 also knew this and spent a lot of time balancing the C14 walkers to have numbers that specifically made them harder to abuse (their minus and plus abilities don't let them zero themselves easily to be recast that turn and used twice)

Commander Rules Insight

New 21 Mar 2016 Asked by injuryman 43 Comments

Is there a reason that for Commander 2014 the Commander rules weren't just tweaked to allow a Planeswalker to be a Commander instead of printing the 5 Planeswalkers for that release? Were Planeswalkers just deemed too powerful as a commander if they weren't balanced for it specifically? I mostly ask because it doesn't seem likely that random Planeswalkers will just show up in sets with " can be your commander." and I would love to see some multicolored Planeswalker commander decks.

Wizards does not control the rules for Commander. It is under the watch of the people who created the format.

Non-creature Tokens

New 07 Mar 2016 Asked by lgosvse 17 Comments

We've had non-creature Artifact tokens before. Born of the Gods/Journey into Nyx had the "Gold" tokens from Gild and King Macar. Magic 2015 had Goblin Kaboomist, who makes artifact tokens. And finally, the Nahiri planeswalker card from Commander 2014 can make an Equipment that is a token.

Okay, I was way off. Populate still doesn’t make any flavor sense duplicating noncreature tokens.

Ob Nixilis Background

New 04 Oct 2015 Asked by taltharmagic 72 Comments

Hey Mark, it is my birthday and I am in Seattle this weekend! I was wondering if you could talk about some trivia on Ob Nixilis.

We knew Ob was coming back When we returned to Zendikar so the Commander 2014 came up with the cool idea of making the Black planeswalker Ob as a human planeswalker from the past to help remind people about his backstory. Happy Birthday!

Double-Faced Cards

New 22 Aug 2015 Asked by mistbornbyheart 17 Comments

"A deck product is one of the least likely to have double-faced cards." But commander 2014 decks had multiple double-faced cards in the form of tokens

Tokens are printed on different card stock. It makes them easier to do.

Planeswalkers as Commanders

New 03 Aug 2015 Asked by lookoutscience 19 Comments

Sorry if it's been asked before, but will we see Planeswalker cards in full sets that can be used as Commanders, or will that only be for those 5 Planeswalkers in Commander 2014?

That was something we did for Commander decks. If we ever repeated it, it would be in another set of Commander decks not in a normal expansion.

Old Characters Return

New 01 Aug 2015 Asked by sientir 48 Comments

I really liked how in Commander 2014 WotC made planeswalker cards for some of the older characters, Teferi and Freyalise in particular. Any chance of that happening again? I'd love to see Serra get a planeswalker card! (Or an Angel themed planeswalker in general, frankly. I like Angels.)

Success breeds repetition. Commander 2014 was well received so that does increase the chances of us doing something like that again. Serra, by the way, was not an angel. The Serra Angels are the Angels made by Serra.

Strategic Character Inclusion

New 13 Jul 2015 Asked by creevianlegacy-deactivated20160 222 Comments

Was part of the reason to include Nahiri and Ob Nixilis in Commander 2014 because you knew we were going back to Zendikar and they had critical roles on that plane's history?

Are you accusing us of actually thinking ahead and planning? : )

Planeswalkers' Design Space

New 18 May 2015 Asked by rockon101000 16 Comments

You said: "With the exception of the one Garruk, we’ve chosen for now to only put loyalty abilities on planeswalkers." But the Commander 2014 Planeswalkers had additional rules text (although I just discovered today that the art is shorter). Could other planeswalker cards have additional rules text?

Some day but not for a while. When you have limited design space, you want to use it up carefully.
